C’mon people! Only ten more takers needed to get that Bar Louie deal going live!
"I tried to capture the spirit of the thing"
What beers do they have? They don’t have a real website and their menu list didn’t have beers on it.
They have a pretty good selection. I can’t recall off the top of my head, but standards like Sierra Nevada, Newcastle, Blue Moon and so on.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Their beer being cheaper is inciting (that and it looks like they have real food) I went to Irish Channel about 65 times last year and 6$ guinness\smithwicks really start to add up.
Their beer being cheaper is inciting
I suppose it might be, but I am assuming you really meant enticing. :-)
The bottom line is that Bar Louie is a chain bar/restaurant, so you won’t get anything totally unique. I dig it because its attached to the arena, and for 20 bucks you and a buddy can have two decent drafts each and split a few appetizers.
If you are a real beer aficionado, I’d suggest Brasserie Beck, also walkable to the VC. You been there yet?
How packed is Bar Louie before games and after? I usually have 3 other people with me.
I like good beers but I can enjoy a lot of regular common macrobrews. I checked out the Brasserie Beck website. They look really nice but man, that’s quite an up charge on their beers. I was drinking Gulden Drak in Philly last weekend for 6$ they want 10$ there. They have an awesome beer list though — thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have to check it out if I’m ever in DC and wanting a nice dinner.
Agree. If you’re not at Bar Louie by 5:30ish, you’re probably not going to get a table nor a seat at the bar.
… or buzzed enough by game time. :)

So that’s where they ended up after they screwed the Big East…

So that’s where they ended up after they screwed the Big East…
Heh, heh. BC and Miami screwed the Big East. VT just went home. Of course, if I were from Syracuse I might feel differently. ;-)
Well, yeah, those two schools can rot.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Have no fear, Gregg Paulus will lead the Orange on the gridiron this fall.
ooof, I’d hate football if I was a ’cuse fan…
We have an incredible history, of course, and the product was still enjoyable when I was there and soon thereafter – McNabb, Harrison, Konrad, Bullock, Darius, Freeney, etc. – but got really bad really fast after Coach P. (great recruiter, lousy coach) was canned. Ugh.
Still, I can take solace in the fact that the best player in the program’s history isn’t a convicted dog killer or drunk driver.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t think you guys have ever been the same since this game.
Keith Bullock’s jock, meet Mr. Vick.
(And yes, his actions were disgusting, but unless someone went to VT, they will never truly understand how much he did for the school just by playing there for two years).
You beat be to it. I was just writing that up.
But I don’t hate cuse. Home of the greatest WR of all time.
And Paulus will actually be a decent QB for ’cuse. He was a top QB coming out of high school.

I knew this clip would be shown. I didn’t even bother clicking on it. I know what it is.
This play is why I hate McNabb.

And why, even though he’s an Eagle, I love him. Wonder if he and Dogboy will reminisce about the good old days.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yup. Instead, we got crap and lots of it.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not going to lie all joking aside, as much as I want to hate McNabb. And I really want to hate him cause of that 1 play. I can’t really hate him after hearing it was HE who is pulling for vick.
He’s a good guy and I am just not a fan of his on the football field. If he were on my team I’d be his biggest supporter.

Seeing that clip reinforced my belief that college football (and pro football too) should never be played in a dome. I sat in Lane Stadium during a hurricane for three hours and it was one of the greatest sports experiences of my life.

The Junkies this morning had a guy call in that went to a high school nearby where Paulus went and he was apparently a SICK qb back then. This may not be as dreadful as you might think? Sort of like riding a bicycle, you don’t forget how to pass for 300 yards…

I’ll always defend Monk. Dude was the greatest WR of all time. He never fell down to avoid a hit.
by vt caps fan on Aug 18, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions
As good as he was you still make yourself sound ridiculous every time you drop that “greatest WR of all time.”
Jerry Rice is waiting on Line 1… : )
Monk was awesome, even for non-Redskins fans like myself, but it may be a bit hasty to “crown his arse” just yet…
If Monk is that far up, my boy Largent would have to come into the discussion as well. “Field Gulls is over there? Thanks.”

I assume you’re talking football not basketball as it relates to drunk driving.
Melo can’t read these words – the glare off his National Championship is blinding him.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Didn’t the WIRE quasi depict ’Melo in the first season? (In the annual East vs West bball game).
But he did when a NC, so yeah I’m jealous (He did win $200 for winning that bracket – so I’m a fan of his).

Rec’d for the TRUTH.
And I see nothing wrong with that license plate. It’s the best of both worlds. Only thing that tops that is the skins logo plate that says F Snyder.
Okay so funny story...
…as I was driving to a friend’s house yesterday, I pulled up to a 4-way stop sign behind a car with a Caps license plate. As he made a right and pulled into a parking lot, a gave him a good “HONK HONK HONK.” Hopefully he got the message. However, a third party who was also at that stop sign was not very amused, and greeted me with a number of verbal and symbolic gestures that I may have deserved out of context.
Is this honking acceptable? Or a horn foul? I’ve been tempted to honk up my fellow Caps Fan Route 7 commuters but don’t want people pulling over or freaking out over it… : ]

It all depends on the situation I think. If Caps fans were honking every time they saw one another on say the Beltway, chaos would ensue. However, I felt it was appropriate on a neighborhood road in Bethesda as the driver pulled away. If they’re a true fan (and I would assume they are if they’ve pimped their license plate) then they’ll understand.
You could just rattle a few confused onlookers, however…but that’s worth it.
1. Receiver of said “honk” can’t be more than 60 (cardiac issues/curmudgeony response)
2. Receiver must have more than one Caps-related item on car or license plate (the fairweather fan clause)
3. Sender should be sober with legal tags/inspection or you’re just askin’ for it.
4. No beltway honks
Any other good rules to add here? I like this list… I tend to do better with boundaries.

I definitely saw a fellow Caps license plate holder when I was driving over the Bay Bridge a few weeks ago and thought about honking. He seemed older, so I just gave him a head nod as I drove past.
I like the rules, so far. I would like to add that a good receiver will put down the window and yell “Let’s Go Caps!” I know I would!
What’s more laughable about the Schultz photo is that the Caps couldn’t spring for authentic throwback sweaters and instead used those cheapies you see all over eBay (and in the VC stands). Hideous.

Does anyone actually stay at Bar Louie to watch the game? Or is it strictly a pre-game, get-your-drink-on-before-VC type deal? I’m a student, so I’m all about free money, but the occurrence-rate of actually getting tickets is low. $15 and a metro ticket, I could pull that off a lot more easily.

I did have a few friends that couldnt get tickets and watched Game 5 (the Rags) at Bar Louie, yeah it was empty but a fair amount of fans would be there.
But before after the game its usually pretty money.

OT, but that Puck Daddy article on league leaders is pretty funny. This one killed me:
Shots On Goal: Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals, 528
Ovechkin shoots slightly more often than a kid playing “Halo” on his seventh Red Bull. Biggest Threats: The lumber industry. Oh, threats to Ovechkin’s shots on goal lead? Hmmm … stumped. Chances for Repeat: As sure a thing as Ovechkin saying something sexually awkward in a Russian-language interview.

I laughed at that one, especially the halo bit.

Aside from ya know, Bondra and Klee
That draft pretty much sucked for the Caps. John Slaney in the first round, really? with Tkachuk, Brodeur, Smolinski, and Chris Simon still on the board. And the Rod Pasma in the second with Weight, Potvin, Geoff Sanderson, and Slava Kozlov available. Hindsight, I know…
Also, wasn’t aware that Jagr didn’t go first overall.

The more I look back on past hockey drafts, the more I’m amazed at how damned unpredictable the affairs are, with (with minor exceptions.)

I postulated on 3 possible outcomes for the Stephen Strasburg situation:
1- Is not actually Stephen Strasburg. When he arrives at camp, Nationals discover pitcher is actually Mel Lompton of Buffalo, NY, a sixteen-year veteran of Local Pipe Fitters 519. Stan Kasten justifies signing, citing Paul McCartney concert as precedent for having a two-way player on the team.
2- Signs for $181 million per year, as Boras cleverly removes decimal point at last minute of negotiations.
3- Takes superior offer from FC Barcelona to teach fans how to add velocity and movement to rubbish tossing.

The Caps, Pens and B’s are THN’s top three teams in the East… in what order have you got ’em? [The Hockey News]
3 PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Why: Thanks to a roster that sports two of the game’s top stars, the Penguins once again will be excellent, but the wear-and-tear of a Stanley Cup run likely will preclude them from winning an Eastern Conference regular-season title. If Jay McKee and one of Pittsburgh’s young blueline prospects can’t fill the skates of departed veterans Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi, the season may be more of a challenge than first suspected.
Tomorrow = Caps/Bruins pick ’em day…
IS PAЯTY NOW
That’s a bit of a surprise, but given the relative challenge of playing in the Atlantic it makes sense Pitt would be #3. I’m thinking they’ll put the Caps #1 just to avoid doing it the same way as last year’s finish, but we shall see…
Ugh. Can’t you people see that this is just a set up so they can write their “Alex choked, Sid overcame adversity” articles at year-end?!

To be clear, I don’t subscribe to that point of view, I just know there are some real tin-hatters out there who think the Caps are disrespected 24/7/365 and anything positive must actually be the opposite.

On the topic of the license plates, did anyone go in on the initial buy for VA Caps plates, and did it happen? If so, any word on when (or if) they’re available for those of us who didn’t, and if they’ll be per-year fee or one-time fee?

It’s so lame they are still trying to get those made – the only needed 350 applications to start with =\. I’ve had mine for awhile now in MD.
In VA I’m pretty sure you pay 25$ a year for the plate.
I’m still trying to find the link to get my MD plates.
