Giroux starting the year here?
I sure hope not. He was TERRIBLE in his time with the big club last year.

If Eric Fehr isn’t ready to go in October, Giroux might get a healthy look on the right side.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I wonder if any of the Rockers will give us comedy like this one’s favorite book.

When the Rockers first started doing games last year, they did the whole 2nd intermission contest/race on the ice, and were supposed to toss t-shirts at the end of it, and one of the Rockers tried tossing a shirt over the boards near me, only to have the netting reject it. The funny part was that she picked up the shirt and tossed it again, in the same area, and the same thing happened. I’m looking forward to this year if for nothing else to see if the new blood repeats this.

anyone know what type of salary a red rocker makes? (or if she makes a salary at all?) i know the redskins cheerleaders have historically earned only ~$50 a game. obviously there are many more home games for the caps than the ’skins. would be interested.

GI Joe Comparisons: O-b-kay-b. Someone was bored. Some I buy and some I don’t.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Yes, that one I liked. Ovi as Cobra Commander – whut? Not buying.
Sean Avery as Shipwreck was good, tho.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Yeah that was good too. How can you say that a) AO isn’t a villain and b) he is going to succeed in taking over the league where CC failed, and yet still draw that comparison. Oh, I guess it’s because AO has been wearing that mirrored visor for so long.
No idea.
And dragging Michael Vick in was funny – lame, but funny.
The one that had me really going OH HELL NO was Malkin as Duke. But … who would that be?
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
I’m thinking Nick Lidstrom fits the bill – veteran leader, even has the look (sorta).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Better than Malkin. I’m not sure how the guy that can’t clearly communicate gets bumped into the leadership category. Plus, how on earth do you make Duke a Godless Commie. He’s a Real American Hero. I call shenanigans.
Avery probably shouldn’t be a good guy either. Maybe Sean Avery and Steve Ott can be Tomax and Xamot.
along these lines, when the DVD comes out any GI Joe fan from the 80’s should check out the recent made for Cartoon Network movie GI Joe Resolute

They’re doing a full site re-design, so they probably decided not to waste their time on that page’s banner.

Club Scarlet is finally slightly updated as well, but I want them to stock a Cyrillic Ovechkin shirt in the ladies’ cut in the online store. The men’s T-shirts are a little boxy.

Too bad i’ve only got one rec for this comment. It deserves a million.
The problem with it is that when they claim they’re looking for the female fan, what they’re really looking for is the girlfriends and wives that hold the guys’ purse strings. It’s a trendy marketing tack – usually the women control the money in a relationship, so if you target the women, you get a better result. True as far as it goes, but insulting to real female fans.

So Scarlett Caps entire existence in predicated on the notion that a very large percentage of the DC metropolitan is whipped?
That’s the marketing theory, anyway. I usually follow the money when I want the real reason why something happened. If they wanted a real women’s community, they’d add a forum. They just seems completely unaware that there are knowledgeable fans who happen to be female.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
I think the market demographic they’re shooting for first and foremost with Scarlett Caps is casual fans, then female fans.
Female fans who are already in to the team and who are already buying tickets, buying merch, supporting the team, discussing it online, etc, already identify with the Capitals as a brand and have brand loyalty. So from a marketing perspective, they’re already captured and from a logistical (?) standpoint there’s not a lot to do differently because hardcore female fans are going to have the same discussions they’re already having with the predominantly male fan base.
On the other hand if you can get casual fans – women who think hockey is kind of neat but don’t really know the rules and who might be attracted to the perceived outsider hipness of hockey and the sex appeal of the players, you’re targeting a whole new potential market base.
This
The Red Rockers idea is not nearly as ridiculous as our female Rinkers would have one believe.

They have a “Hockey 101” section which is vaguely useful, but would Totally Kill if they would add some Caps game clips highlighting what the players are doing in an actual game (helping with that “I can’t see the puck” problem), and some video of the team members themselves explaining their positions. They wouldn’t even need to be wearing full game gear. Tshirts and shorts would do nicely.

I suppose my question on that (which is something that I think can be extended towards a lot of the Scarlett Caps stuff) is why is that more beneficial the female fan base? Why not just have that on the team’s main web site or main fan club site?
Right. That’s essentially what the good NHL broadcast teams do. It’s helpful to all fans, especially new fans, so I won’t knock Club Scarlett for using it, I just don’t know why it would be specific to female fans.
I think it’s a little condescending, actually. The assumption seems to be the that new male fans don’t need the rules/tactics explained to them and new female fans do. The only real difference here is that, like directions, no male is going to ask for help/guidance. : ]
I would’ve greatly benefitted from this sort of thing when I was learning the game, and I love X’s and O’s from any sport (even basketball) that helps to enrich my appreciation of the finer points.

I think I’m agreeing with you. I think all fans could benefit from better analysis and explanation of how and why certain players do things. I don’t see why a team would go through the effort of putting together the material and then only making it available to female fans.

Hey, I’d be all for that. I just don’t want to be treated as any more stupid than a guy who doesn’t know everything about hockey, and that’s the feeling I get from the Scarlet Caps site at the moment.
And maybe stupid isn’t the right word, but I think you get the drift of what I’m getting at.
Hey, I’d be all for that. I just don’t want to be treated as any more stupid than a guy who doesn’t know everything about hockey, and that’s the feeling I get from the Scarlet Caps site at the moment.
I think that’s a fair point because I think the site assumes a very, very limited knowledge of hockey because it’s built for (very) casual fans and I can understand why that irks women who already know the rules and are interested primarily in the hockey and see the eye candy as value-added (or not, either way).
I guess I’m sort of seeing three relevant groups of fans here: A) serious male fans, B) serious female fans, and C) casual female fans (there are of course casual male fans, but I don’t think they’re pertinent at the moment). From those groups I can think of content that appeals to much of groups A and B (discussion of strategy, performance, line combinations, prospect updates, etc) and content that appeals to groups B and C (glamor shots, etc), but I’m just not sure what content there is that appeals to group B but not groups A or C, i.e. substantive hockey information and discussion that women would be interested in, but men would not.
Perhaps the best course of action would be to use the B/C overlap to pique the interest of the casual fan and then use the A/B content to try and turn them into someone who is, as J.P. put it, more interested in Tom Poti’s +/- than David Steckel’s hair?
by David Getz on Aug 11, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
What gfcaps fan said, and also what David said. I’d rate myself as a B shading to a C fan myself, learning the nuances of the game by observing the masters at work here at Japers’, but also appreciating the,er, aesthetics of the game. Ahem. (Not necessarily paying attention to Stecks’ hair tho, and for now I’ll just have to take your word on Poti’s +/-).
The Caps website as it stands right now, up to and including Club Scarlet, does not really work on either of those levels.
But that’s why we have hockey blogs.
IS PAЯTY NOW
If a woman needs glamour shots to be interested in a sport, she’s not interested in the sport itself. Now, I’m not against the glamour shots (hey, I don’t mind the view), but they’ve got nothing to do with enjoying the game.
I admit to having known pretty much nothing when I began watching hockey, and needing to ask my daughter (not the men in my life) the rules when I was confused. I’ve got a Hockey for Dummies book on my shelf (that pre-dates the lockout), but that was only marginal in helping me learn the sport. Visual aids are so much better (Hockey 101 with video).
And I think the reference of +/- versus hair definitely deserves a rec of its very own.
If a woman needs glamour shots to be interested in a sport, she’s not interested in the sport itself.
No, but isn’t it possible that an interest in the sport itself could start with a superficial interest in the players?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
my girlfriend would go to games because they were fun and she grew up going to bears games, but she really started getting into the team when I was passing along videos of the players like the Ladies Man video, or the Segway tour video that let the players personalities shine through.
I haven’t spent any time on the club scarlet site, but it would make sense to link those videos up and make them readily available

That’s an excellent question. Maybe they do have H101 somewhere else on their fan sites, but I haven’t spent a lot of time poking around. I think I only found Club Scarlet (the name of which sounds like a third-tier brothel thirteen miles out of Reno, BTW) when Joe Beninati sent me to the Comcast website to enter some contest.

In return, too bad that I can only rec this comment once.
And based on my one e-mail interaction with the office, it’s a woman who’s in charge of that dreck. And referring to other comment, I desperately wanted it to include a forum for intelligent discussion.
The way I look at it, if you create a forum, the group B girls can teach the group C girls, and it’s a lot less condescending (and more interesting) to learn from other women than off a website. Have a thread for Hockey 101, where girls can ask questions of other girls.

Happy Birthday to David Shand...
…I actually wrote him a fan letter when he was playing for Atlanta (the Flames back then) when I was a kid and he was just starting out. At the opening of the new arena, I brought that up and he asked if he replied. I said he did and he did (I have an autographed photo in a folder at my parents house along with one signed by Pat Ribble…)
He went from playing hockey to being a morning radio personality….

Not that I’m surprised by anything he said, but that Alzner link on the sidebar hasn’t done anything to decrease my excitement for him. Sounds like he feels the heat from Carlson and is going to work his tail off this summer to come in and take a spot in the lineup. I have a feeling GMGM may be waiting on Alzner/Carlson to prove they can handle a spot full time before he ships out one of the more veteran D.

Russian Machine Never Breaks
Ummmm, did anybody check THIS post at Abel to Yzerman?
The writer is freaking out about Datsyuk being named the 4th best player behind Malkin Ovechkin and Crosby, as well as other Red Wing rankings…
We brought you Johan Franzen at #39 of their "top 50"? That, in itself, is a joke. Then we talked about Zetterberg at 8? Lidstrom at 7? How about Iginla, who I think is a great player, at 5? What GM, fan, teammate would take Iginla over Zetterberg, or Iginla over Lidstrom?
The kicker, though, came today. Pavel Datsyuk at 4. Leaving the top 3 as Malkin, Ovechkin and Rosby, in whatever order you choose.
It’s simply about the best players right now. Well, it’s my opinion of the best players right now. Age isn’t a factor and, most importantly, contracts don’t matter. This isn’t about the best values, or the best contracts, or the players with the best long-term upside, it’s just about the best players.
Those are the words of Adam Gretz, the author of the list. So, Adam, you’re telling me you’d take Sid Rosby over Pavel Datsyuk when it’s "just about the best players"? Really? You’d take Rosby over two-time Selke winner and Hart finalist? You’d take Rosby over Datsyuk when one is the acknowledged best (or second best only to Zetterberg) two-way player in the game and the faux-captain won’t even take the ice short-handed?
Does anybody else find his disbelief strange? You have Datsyuk behind the guys who won the last 3 MVP’s and a guy who was also a finalist the last two seasons and won a Conn Smythe. Just seems bizarre to me.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

He’s far from alone on that thread. The fratching back and forth between Wings and Pens fans is hilarious and reads a lot like Caps / Pens fratching. (No wonder Wings and Caps fans seem to have a mutual respect thing going.)
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
I don’t blame him for thinking two-way play is underrated. He’s got a good point about Lidstrom being low as well, but that’s another issue (D vs. F and how they’re valued).
I don’t think he should be so surprised, but his point is partly valid.
if someone had listed Max Talbot in front of Datsyuk because he had more cup winning goals, it would be one thing. But to act as if the last 3 Art Ross winners being ahead of Datsyuk is somehow a travesty…well I just don’t get it. Datsyuk at 4 seems perfectly reasonable to me.
