You're the GM, 23 players, $56.8M, ready, set, GO!
This is purely for fun. This is for all the armchair GM's out there who think they can build a team. So here is your chance, I need 4 lines, 4 RW's, 4 C's, 4 LW's, 6 Defensemen, 2 Goalies and 3 other players (non-goalies) to complete your roster. Obviously use current salaries of players, http://www.capgeek.com is a great resource. If the player is a current RFA add 10% to last years salary and if we are talking about a UFA, then it will be up to the masses to agree on the new terms, luckily there arent many UFA's getting substancial raises.
Here is my team...
1st Line
LW Zack Parise - $3.125M | C Ryan Getzlaf - $5.325M | RW Patrick Kane - $3.725M = $12.175M
2nd Line
LW Ray Whitney - $3.55M | C Nicklas Backstrom - $2.4M | RW Johan Franzen - $3.955M = $9.905M
3rd Line
LW Brooks Laich - $2.067M | C Ryan Kesler - $1.75M | RW Bobby Ryan - $1.922M = $5.739M
4th Line
LW Loui Eriksson $1.6M | C Bryan Little - $0.900M | RW Devin Setoguchi - $1.247M = $3.747M
Defensive Pairing 1
Mike Green - $5.25M | Kevin Bieska - $3.75M = $9.0M
Defensive Pairing 2
Duncan Keith - $1.475M | Mark Streit - $4.1M = $5.575M
Defensive Pairing 3
Luke Schenn - $2.975M | Mark Staal - $0.827M = $3.802M
Goalies |
Cam Ward - $2.67M | Steve Mason - $0.905M = $3.575M
Other 3
LW David Perron - $0.918M | LW Milan Lucic - $0.850M | D Kris LeTang - $0.835 = $2.603
TOTAL = $56.121M
Leftover = $0.679

It’s kinda cheating to use players on their entry level deals, no? I mean, no team would have this many (good) players on their first contracts.
Interesting exercise, though.

Well the rules aren’t different for me, its an even playing field for all. You could conceivably have 23 entry level contract players, but it wouldn’t be the best lineup you could create. There is balance.
I’d like to see your balance in 1-2 seasons when those entry level deals end how you’d keep it together or who gets traded. :)

I think entry level contracts should be kosher. Really, there aren’t that many folks at any given time who can produce huge numbers on their first contract.

Here’s my all bargains team. They come in at a total of $35,760,830.
My philosophy is that you build outward from the net, so start with the goalies.
Steve Mason $905,000
33 wins, 2.29 GAA, .916 s%
Pekka Rinne $725,000
29 wins, 2.38 GAA, .917 s%
Goalie total: $1,630,000
Next there’s the D. I was heavily influenced by Mirtle’s Langway Award. Offensive defensemen are highly paid, so I focused mainly on guys who keep the puck out of the net (though Keith can help on the PP). Sean O’Donnell may be the most underpaid player in hockey.
Duncan Keith $1,475,000
77 GP, 8 G, 36 A, 44 P, 60 PIM
Aaron Ward $2,500,000
65 GP, 3 G, 7 A, 10 P, 44 PIM
Jan Hejda $2,000,000
82 GP, 3 G, 18 A, 21 P, 38 PIM
Anton Volchenkov $2,500,000
68 GP, 2 G, 8 A, 10 P, 36 PIM
Sean O’Donnell $1,250,000
82 GP, 0 G, 12 A, 12 P, 71 PIM
Dan Girardi $1,555,000
82 GP, 4 G, 18 A, 22 P, 53 PIM
Defense total: $11,250
And now the forwards. These were influenced by Mirtle’s post on defensive forwards (and of course on their offensive stats and on watching them).
I’d put the
top line up against any top line in the league. We may see this line play together in Soichi.
LW Loui Eriksson $1,600,000
82 GP, 36 G, 27 A, 63 P, 14 PIM
C Nicklas Backstrom $2,400,000
82 GP, 22 G, 66 A, 88 P, 46 PIM
RW Tomas Holmstrom $2,250,000
53 GP, 14 G, 23 A, 37 P, 38 PIM
Second line:
LW Milan Lucic $850,000
72 GP, 17 G, 25 A, 42 P, 136 PIM
C Todd White $2,375,000
82 GP, 22 G, 51 A, 73 P, 24 PIM
RW T.J. Oshie #1,275,000
57 GP, 15 G, 25 A, 39 P, 28 PIM
Third line:
LW Alexei Ponikarovsky $2,105,000
82 GP, 23 G, 38 A, 61 P, 38 PIM
C Joe Pavelski $1,637,500
80 GP, 25 G, 34 A, 59 P, 46 PIM
RW Devin Setoguchi $1,246,666
81 GP, 31 G, 34 A, 65 P, 25 PIM
The shutdown line (and these guys can still score)
LW Rene Bourque $1,350,000
58 GP, 21 G, 19 A, 40 P, 70 PIM
C Ryan Kesler $1,750,000
82 GP, 26 G, 33 A, 59 P, 61 PIM
RW Ryan Callahan ~$700,000
82 GP, 22 G, 18 A, 40 P, 45 PIM
Forwards total: $19,539,170
Three bonus players:
D Marc Staal $826,666
82 GP, 3 G, 12 A, 15 P, 64 PIM
F Sam Gagner $1,635,000
76 GP, 16 G, 25 A, 41 P, 51 PIM
F Justin Abdelkader $850,000
(playoffs) 9 GP, 2 g, 1 A, 3 P, 0 PIM
Reserves total: $3,312,000
haha not even at the cap floor!
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

The video game companies should do this as free publicity for the games.

It wouldn’t be too hard but there’s no way I’m putting in the effort. If anyone is reading this do the auto suggestion drop downs like in facebook when you start typing a name in the roster spot.
Free? They’ve already tried to cash in on NFL Head Coach and a General Manager baseball game.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Yeah but you can do a heck of a lot more in those games then assemble players and see what the total payroll would be.

That doesn’t change the fact that they don’t sell and EA puts out little more than that. They’re all about money, and wouldn’t do this for free.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
…but the idea was to use it as a promotional tool, not as a favor to people

So do I. I’m completely hosed at work today because I took the time to do that. But it was fun.
