Wednesday Caps Clips: As The Nyles Turns
Your savory breakfast links:
- Today's must-read interview: Alex Semin. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- "If Michael Nylander is close to agreeing to play next season in the Kontinental Hockey League ... that's news to Nylander's agent." [Capitals Insider]
- Of course, it was also news to Nylander's agent when he signed with Washington two summers ago. [Capitals Insider c. July, 2007 (h/t @EmptyMaybe)]
- And it wouldn't be unusual for a player to have a different agent to handle his European business, as Sergei Fedorov had earlier this summer. [@AllenPope]
- Finally, there isn't much of a role for an agent in any Nylander-to-the-KHL transaction anyway - his pay is set, regardless of where he plays. [Our post on the subject]
- On to happier topics, Milan Jurcina's agent on his client's arbitration hearing yesterday: "Both sides were professional, and I don't believe anybody came out from the hearing feeling anybody delivered any low blows." [In the Room]
- Even happier (well, for Bears fans at least), Bryan Helmer has re-signed with the Bears. [John Walton Hockey and HBH, who looks at the organizational implications of the transaction]
- Alex Ovechkin finally admits to punching Evgeni Malkin's agent. [Russia Today via Alex Ovetjkin]
- AO was/is on the cover of Russia's version of Men's Health, and if you wanted to see him sans shirt, this is the video for you. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- This article is worth it for the graphic alone. [CBS News]
- Sticking with politics (the third-rail of hockey blogging), Chris Cillizza (or his web producer) shows a little Caps love. [The Fix via FanShot]
- The Ducks have named former Caps goalie Pete Peeters as their new goaltending consultant. Peeters was 70-41-15/3.06/.887 for Washington over his four years in town, and is in the top five all-time in most franchise goaltending categories. [NHL.com]
- Speaking of the Ducks, where was I when they sold for just $70 million five years ago? I feel like I could have pulled that kind of funding together, had I known. [From the Rink]
- Honestly, I feel like I've been waiting my entire blogging life for this post to be written. [Puck Prospectus]
- Finally, going through some things I stumbled across this little piece of awesomeness: It's a patch with details (click image to enlarge) sewn on a felt base from who-knows-when. Want one of your own? Head on over to eBay.

Do you feel more like one of the Capitals leaders?
Yes.
Give him the A!
"The passion of our supporters cannot be contained by clothing."
Bizarro world – AO is ready to bolt for the KHL and Semin is committed to staying in the NHL.
Btw, “I fell in love with Washington. Nice, quiet town.” is nice to hear from Semin.

Yeah, sounded like he could be resigned at a hometown discount of sorts.

Yet in the same interview:
I have a contract with Washington for another year. And I know how it goes in the KHL, more or less. I phone Zhmakin all the time, talk with other guys. I’ve heard that the league is getting better. There are people who are interested in its success.
Sounds like he needs to be re-signed before the season ends or he may get tempted. I assume his RFA status has no real impact on the KHL/NHL agreements.
I bet that Semin stays as long as the number GMGM and Ted provide is reasonable. He calls Ovie his brother and we all know how important it is to play with your brother.

I see Semin’s reply as trying to say very diplomatically that he wants to stay in the NHL and play hockey in North America.
He has to tread a little lightly here, not causing offense to the sense of Russian pride, which is never far from the surface. Plus he was speaking at Ovi’s party, where many of the "people interested in [KHL’s] success’ were in attendance.
I read it the same way. I am thrilled to hear what he has to say about Ovechkin, the NHL, and DC. Makes me feel a lot less nervous about him bolting for more money elsewhere, whether in Russia (disaster) or the NHL (unfortunate, but at least the Caps would be compensated).
At least in the KHL he wouldn’t be lighting up our goalie?

I’d be ok with him occasionally lighting up the Caps for 4 first round picks IF he could not be retained as a RFA.

Speaking of new avatars, that Caps patch in the post would make a killer one for someone in need…

Doesn’t puck bunny sort of have negative connotations? ::checks urban dictionary:: Yup, that’s exactly what I thought it meant…
yes, but I thought it was vaguely amusing and girly and thus hopefully won’t result in me being “dude” anymore.
This is a great interview with Semin, especially considering we almost never hear from him. He’s saying all the right things to wedge his way into our hearts.
I think I’m in love.

Correct – 48 hours after the hearing.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Question: As per Corey Masisak, how is the Caps pointing out that 26 is a one-dimensional defenseman (which, er, could be a compliment in that it implies that he has a dimension), a low blow?
First of all, it’s not Corey (though it is his blog). Second, Whyno is making the assumption that Walsh is referencing the Mo hearing and that line in particular, when Walsh was probably talking more generally. I don’t think Walsh considers “one-dimensional” a low blow.

Wasn’t it an Islander who ended up in tears after his hearing with Mad Mike?

Just like Katie posts on Capitals Insider.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That’s not helpful either. “Capitals Insider by Tarik El-Bashir”… except when it’s not. Nice job old media.
Yes. To writers especially, it matters. (It should matter to readers too — I realize we’re talking about TEB here, but it should help the reader gauge the credibility of the material s/he is reading.)
The way I see it, if they’re posting on CI, they work for the WaPo, and I’m assuming WaPo hires credible writers.
I see what you’re saying, but I think the fact that a post is on CI is more important than who posted it there.
by Murshawursha on Jul 29, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
You can figure out which writer posts the material here, so you should be able to figure out who posts for CI or In the Room if it’s not the main writer. I know you’ve got it out for the old media but don’t go overboard.

Yeah… I don’t really care if an article here is posted by JP, DMG, or Pepper… It’s here, which means it’s quality analysis :)
by Murshawursha on Jul 29, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Bullshit. I am old media. I’ve worked in Old media for 16 years. That’s why I’d prefer it when old media gets it right.
At least on the blogs it says exactly who posted it. Japers’ rink is all about Japers’ but there are other posters. Large blogs typically have more than one contributer. This has been common place for about 11 years now.
He isn’t having Katie write his columns in the paper he’s doing the sharing on new media.
Old media has never seen anything like ghostwriting anyway, right?
So maybe I was a little broad with “old media” as a whole, but everyone who comes here regularly knows your favorite whipping boys. You should keep it to the relevant stuff, like their flawed analysis. Complaining about stupid stuff like who posted what particular information just undercuts your credibility. I once saw Rollins Band play and I was shocked, SHOCKED, that other people were on stage with him… but I got over it.
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 29, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions
I think the bottom line here is that if you’re going to have multiple contributors to a blog, don’t put one name on the masthead. What would be so wrong with “Capitals Insider” sans Tarik’s picture?
I’m not sure DMG, Tuvan and Pepper would be as happy writing for “J.P.’s Rink” with a big ol’ picture of me grinning as the banner as they are writing for “Japers’ Rink.” But I could be wrong.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If that had been your banner/logo since before they got here I think they’d probably live with it. TEB didn’t change the site to be more self-aggrandizing when Katie joined on, she just joined the site as was. No big deal I say.
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 29, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe he’ll update his banner picture to reflect the changes he made this past season. Can be one of those cliche V pictures where TEB is in the front and every else off to his side.
Should forward this on to Greg Wysh too. All those people posting under his alias of puck daddy and phallic picture are probably annoyed and would like retribution.
I think the bottom line here is that if you’re going to have multiple contributors to a blog, don’t put one name on the masthead.

Re: Pulling the goaltender
Interesting article, but pretty poorly written—I don’t think the graphs or the math are explained fully or clearly enough, but I’m willing to accept the conclusions.
The bigger questions are:
1) is one minute left the optimum time to attempt this strategy?
2) What’s up with pulling the goalie down two goals? Is that strategy really +EV? And if so, what’s the proper time to try—many seem to land on 90 seconds left in the third.
3) How has the Bettman point affected (effected? can never remember) the math?
Well, when I played in high school, we didn’t have overtime. I remember one game we were tied with like 1:50 left in the third. My coach called a time out and goes, “Okay guys, here’s the deal. I hate ties. Ties are like kissing your sister.”
So he pulled the goalie, we scored, and won by one goal. Only time I’ve ever been on a team that’s done it.

Handy-dandy guide: “Affect” is a verb. “Effect” is a noun. Exception: Business usage allows for the turn of phrase “to effect a change in” something.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
affect can also be a noun, meaning “display of emotion.”
ovechkin displayed no affect when shown photos of victimized goalies.

Both sides were professional
If I were Juice I would be pissed at my agent for twittering, even if it was during the breaks. I mean, it’s great fodder for us but I cannot think of a situation or circumstance where that activity benefits the client.
from the house that Red Jesus built
Does it really hurt him, though? I mean, you could argue that he should be spending the breaks fine-tuning his case, but odds are he’s been preparing for this for a couple of months at least. Besides, it takes all of like 2 seconds to Twitter?
by Murshawursha on Jul 29, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions
if you consider it a distraction that doesn’t help prepare for rebuttals, then yes it COULD conceivably hurt him if his agent is not as focused as he could be and misses an opportunity in the rebuttals as a result. It won’t cost him millions, but it could have a slight impact.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

Didn’t we argue this ad nauseum yesterday?
by DrinkingPartner on Jul 29, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions
At the very least, I’d see it as a distraction. Unless, maybe they had some kind of agreement in advance that he’d twitter.
But given that he’s been preparing for this for a while, it’s possible tWalsh was so on top of his game that he was prepared in advance for everything the Caps said. So they take their break, he asks Jurcina if he wants him to add anything, Jurcina says no. So now they’re just waiting out the break.
The only point I’m trying to make is that it’s not fair to assume Walsh was slacking. If he’s prepared, he’s prepared.
by Murshawursha on Jul 29, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions
If he’s a good agent, he is prepared going into that hearing and knows his case cold. He also knows what the Caps will say and the counters to that. There aren’t surprises here. I think we can probably also safely assume he’s doing this during breaks – it would be poor form to do it in the middle of the arbitration and would send the wrong message to the arbitrator. I understand the criticism for lack of focus, but it’s probably overblown. This is sort of like checking for email during breaks, except it’s a form of marketing/publicity for him and his client.
Does it really hurt him, though? I mean, you could argue that he should be spending the breaks fine-tuning his case, but odds are he’s been preparing for this for a couple of months at least. Besides, it takes all of like 2 seconds to Twitter?
IMO at best it shows a lack of focus on the task at hand.
If his goal is to represent his client to the Washington Capitals organization only, it provides zero benefit to that client and is a waste of Jurcina’s money and time.
If he is trying to reach out to other teams, then there may be some benefit to the Twittering. But shopping your client out from inside his own arbitration hearing might cause the Caps to question the player’s desire to stay with the team.
You know, for some reason I always imagined arbitrations to go something like this
