Omsk GM: We Keep Intensive Talks With Nylander
We keep intensive talks with Nylander. The problem is that he has a contract with Washington, but I believe that we'll still manage to get him here. He played with Jagr in Rangers and they did a great job together. Jaromir told me he was his best partner ever.

I’m still confused how it would work with the NHLPA and the fact that Nylander is still under contract. For example how that would effect the salary cap.

What’s weird is that the “rumor” or whatever you want to call it has apparently gone mainstream. They reported it on Comcast Sportsnite yesterday.
yeah, I thought the rumor was put to bed, or at least far-out hope, until I heard Comcast casually mention it yesterday. Went to their website to follow-up and saw that Bleacher Report (can we mention other sites here? im still new) had a report as recent as friday on this. Here is an excerpt that will get all caps fans excited;
“…I had a conversation with Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post last week at the Capitals’ summer development camp regarding Nylander, and we basically agreed on the most likely way this is going to be resolved. Nylander will come into training camp with the opportunity to prove himself again and make the Capitals 2009-10 roster. If and when it becomes acknowledged that he won’t have a full-time position on the team, then he most likely would move overseas for the remainder of the season. …” and this is what Dmitry Chesnokov (KHL reporter who covered the caps last year) quoted Avangard’s GM as saying this past week, “We are intensively negotiating with Nylander. In spite of his contract with Washington, we are still hoping to get him.” …
Um, all signs seem to point to go on this one. I dont see how Nylander will prove himself in training camp when he’s been with BB for 2 years now and stuck to the bench accordingly. Are they still holding on as insurance in case BMo isn’t 100%? His excuse for exercising his NTC last year was because his kids were in school, so the summer seems like the best time to move him. …
Then, with the cap space, my pipe dream becomes acquiring Kobesaw (who Boston is trying to dump to re-sign Kessel). We got extra cheap and young d, where they are very short on, and he would look nice next to Semin and BMo. …
So losing Nylander is obviously a tremendous benefit for the cap. Here’s one way to measure it — I did a roster on CapGeek with 14 forwards, and 8 D (with a guess for Juice’s salary).

Setting aside the usual silly CapGeek lines and pairings, the point is that the Caps would have about 2.5 Million in cap space before even worrying about bonuses. With Nylander gone, the team would instantly go from hard up against the cap to having plenty of room to maneuver. 2.5 Million is certainly enough to send Morrison and a prospect or a pick to someone for an veteran defenseman.
I’ll throw a name out there — Scott Hannan. Strong, physical guy who can play the top pairing and would really be an excellent asset on the second pairing. Will bring home 4.5 Million each of the next two years, which are the back half of a 4-year contract he signed when things looked brighter in Colorado. Well, Colorado is in full rebuild now and it may not make sense to pay 9 Million to a 30-year old defenseman over those next two years. Hannan probably isn’t an all star, but he’s got 600+ games of experience and knows how to get it done.
A guy like that would be out of the question for the Caps with Nylander on the team. But if Nylander leaves, this kind of move becomes a possibility. And you can fill in any other veteran who was signed for a long contract a couple of years ago that looked good at the time.

I kind of hope they trade ShaMo if only to resolve the names thing.

No thanks to Scott Hannan. Yes please to Patrick Sharp (3 more years at 3.9, a freaking steal). Sharp would be more expensive to acquire than Hannan, but he helps this team far more than Hannan did. Our top 6 forwards were a bigger weakness than our D was and Sharp would immediately give us 2 elite lines no matter how you arranged them.
What makes you think Sharp is available? I agree the Caps would look pretty good with Sharp in one of their sweaters, but I haven’t seen any indication the Hawks would move him.
The Caps could probably make room for Sharp right now, with Nylander still on the roster, if the opportunity presented.

They need to make some cap room for next year when they have to resign Toews, Kane, and Keith. Sharp and Buff could be guys to move.
