"That's a good term. I'm proud of that. I feel I'm a solid defender. I can kill penalties or be on the power play. I can break a puck out, get rid of the puck and then skate to the net as quickly as I can with my stick down and hopefully it comes back to me somewhere around the net. If one of those guys shoot it, and there's a rebound around the net, I feel it's my job to go for it." - Mike Knuble on being a "garbage collector" (much, much more from Knuble at Puck Daddy)

as a lampoon of puck daddy’s commentariat, this is totally acceptable and rec’d.

But only as that. And only this one time. All future “firsts” will be summarily dismissed.

Is there any honor in being the “first” one dismissed?

Seems like a good mentor for Eric Fehr.

And a good mentor to Brooks Laich on how to give a quote for the press (not that Brooks needed the help).
Damn, that was a sweet paragraph. Yes please!

You know, I can’t believe the League isn’t doing anything [special] with Washington. Like sending them to Europe to open the season. They’re sending Chicago and Florida? And St. Louis? I can see Detroit going over there, and Chicago … alright. But St. Louis and Florida? I can’t believe they’re not having [the Capitals] over there in Moscow or something.
That’s a good point. Why the hell are St. Louis and Florida there? Time difference means fans in the States can’t even watch their teams.
by red army line on Jul 23, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Because the Caps don’t want to go over, because it can kill your early season. Nothing good comes from starting the season in Europe from the team’s perspective, and I hope the Caps never give in to the league’s (presumed) desire to have them over there.

How much control do the Caps have? Can they really say no?
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 23, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m almost certain they’d have to. Starting the season in Europe is a serious competitive disadvantage, I don’t see how the league could force a team to do so against their will.
by brs03 on Jul 23, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. The Pens were barely able to recover this year and the Ducks (and to a lesser extent, the Kings) could not really recover the previous year.
by SharksFanEst.1994 on Jul 24, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a disadvantage, but I seriously doubt a team can decline the invitation without a very good reason for doing so. Maybe that’s what you were getting at. I don’t think ANY teams want to do this (though I do wonder how the Caps’ locker room would feel about playing in Moscow – they might get the home town treatment).
by grapejoos on Jul 24, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I don’t see how the league can force a team to do this without their approval, period.
And some orginizations aren’t going to be completely against the idea; extra publicity, chance for teambuilding, etc.
by brs03 on Jul 24, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m pretty sure Brian Burke was against the idea when the Ducks got sent over, but it didn’t make a difference.
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 24, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is a much bigger deal in the NFL, where you only get 8 home games to begin with and the loss of (1) revenue and (2) home field advantage creates very sticky situations. the revenue is supposedly supplemented by the NFL, but there’s no way the saints wanted to be the home team in london a year after playing basically 16 road games. that was not their choice.
by Natty Bumppo on Jul 24, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with this. However, we don’t really know if the league has an actual desire for them to go to Europe yet. Possibly because the obvious destination should be Moscow, but that isn’t likely to be in the cards any time soon.

I don’t think we’d care for the KHL setting up camp over here, likewise with us going over there eh? That may seem like apples to oranges to us, but the KHL aspires to rival the NHL eventually (I assume).
I’d DEFINITELY watch an NHL game over in Russia though, don’t get me wrong. Obviously we’d be the home team…
by war_capitals on Jul 23, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’d love to see the KHL head out here for a barnstorming trip.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 23, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Aye… I should’ve clarified that the “we” in question was the NHL. I agree with you, that’d be an awesome idea. Sorta like a soccer “International Friendly” (I think that’s what they call them, I’m not nearly the soccer fan that some on the RInk are).
by war_capitals on Jul 24, 2009 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That would implicitly recognize the KHL as legitimate competition, which I’m sure the NHL has no intention of doing.
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 24, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the caps do actually want to go over. at least the owner does.
by Natty Bumppo on Jul 23, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe the owner does but I doubt Bruce shares that snetiment. Last year, every team that started in Europe fired their coach.
by b.orr4 on Jul 23, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s sentiment, by the way. I don’t know what snetiment is.

by grapejoos on Jul 24, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is so last year’s news. :-)
I thought I had read differently. Maybe b.orr4 is right and it’s Bruce who isn’t interested.

Friendly fire like that, and the tirade from Kolzig when he got nailed in the head by Ovi in practice go a long way in teaching people really quick to stay away from the opposing crease when Ovi is on the ice.
Ovi’s never had a problem scoring without a garbage collector on his line, I’m repeating myself saying we might get better returns with a garbage collector on another line – the opposing argument of course being whose Ovi’s new winger then
I’ll try to refrain from saying this again tho til we see how lines and play start shaking out this coming season
:)

There’s 82 games before the playoffs to figure this out. I can’t wait to see how it plays out. I’m with you, I’m predicting Morrison-Knuble and Ovechkin-Backstrom are the two fundamental duos by the end of the year, with Semin playing with anyone and Fehr, Flash, Laich, Clark all seeing time as the 6th wing.

I haven’t been this psyched about a UFA signing since the Caps picked up Nylander. Let’s hope this Mike turns out better than that Mike.
by b.orr4 on Jul 23, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Knuble is a very different type of player from Nylander, even if they do share a first name (or variants of the same first name). Then again, Michael (and its variants) are probably the most common name on the Caps. We’ve had great luck with Mike Green. And, Michael Neuvert is a great goalie prospect.

I feel goofy using the subject line in a thread with a narrow topic. The subject should be Mike Knuble and what he was quoted saying on puck daddy. What do you need a subject for?
by Gould Old Days on Jul 24, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, the pretentious technique of starting the first sentence in the subject line, giving everyone the dot dot dot and continuing the sentence in the message box below. How clever!
by Cluster on Jul 24, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
on SBN, the subject line also looks a little too much like a link. bums me out when there’s nothing to follow. i did recently learn something from another blog…putting easter egg links in comments or posts. can you find my easter egg? you’re dangerous, maverick.

“It’s not just a mask, it’s a contemporary art piece,” Gaga told reporters in Malta, adding that it was made by a designer friend of hers.
I like how the reporter uses Gaga as if that’s her last name. Funny. Oh, and where’s Tyler? We need his take on this “contemporary art piece”.
