Capitals announce Development Camp schedule
"The camp’s complete roster is yet to be finalized, but among the confirmed participants are Capitals first-round draft picks Anton Gustafsson (2008), John Carlson (2008) and Joe Finley (2005). Also confirmed are Francois Bouchard (2006 second-round selection) and Mathieu Perreault (2006 sixth-round selection) from the 2009 AHL Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears. The 2009 ECHL Kelly Cup champion South Carolina Stingrays will be represented by Josh Godfrey (2007 second-round selection). Seventh-round selection in 2007 Stefan Della Rovere, who was a member of Canada’s gold-medal winning World Junior Championship team, will also be at development camp. Certain selections from the recently completed 2009 NHL Entry Draft will also attend." - Press Release [Click here for the schedule]

So is this the 3rd or 4th development camp for Perreault and Bouchard? I expect them to tear it up this year with their pro experience and experience with the organization. At some point I expect the Caps to train Perreault to play wing but I haven’t seen anything confirming that yet.

Is there going to be a rookie game like last years against the Flyers rookies? I had a ton of fun there.

I think that was the rookie week before training camp

Dev camp does have a culminating scrimmage from 10-1p on Saturday 7/18.

Last year’s had been scheduled as part of a “home and home” w/the Flyers from the year before. That won’t be happening again to the best of my knowledge, unless they’re scheduling a new series.
And, as Ames points out, that’s rookie camp in Sept., not development camp.

I look at Finley and
I picture Grendel from Beowulf.

I tend to picture him clearing the puck over the boards in the NCAA playoffs. Not a penalty, but definitely “Cap-like” last year.
Also, I picture him getting smoked by Peter LeBlanc in OT in that game.

Any word on if the equipment sale will be happening around this time?
by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Jul 2, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There will be a CAPS Convention this year in August or Sept (or so I’ve heard) out at National Harbor. Looks like the equipment sale would be there.

I hope we soon find out that Johansson, Kugryshev and Orlov will be there. I think it’s extra important for the Europeans to be there. Glad to see Gus will be there.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 2, 2009 3:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Kugryshev will probably be there, he played in the Q last year so he shouldn’t have any problems travelling to North America for it.

Yeah, most likely. They just don’t list him by name because he wasn’t a 1st rounder and didn’t play any pro games this spring.

Yeah, Finley is not going to win too many Lady Byng trophies if he makes it to the NHL. Personally I thought beating on the Badger was pretty damn funny. Not too classy, but pretty damn funny. I know a lot of folks are psyched that we have a big banger in the system, but I am pretty doubtful that Finley will ever make it to the NHL.

I have a little time on my hands right now (unemployed) and was wondering if I make the trip to view development camp is it better to watch the workouts or the scrimmages? I have never been to any of the camps and I keep hearing you people talk about all these guys in the system and wouldn’t mind checking it out.

If you got the time, make a day of it and go on one of the days when they have workouts in the morning and a scrimmage in the afternoon. I took a day off from work last summer to do this and got my summer hockey fix. I printed out the roster and took it wit me and got to figure out who was who during the workouts, You can take the elevators down to the food court or go to one of the restaurants in the mall or the area for lunch after the workouts. Then do some window shopping in the mall or go skating if there is a public skate on the other rink or bring a book to catch up on some reading or just catch some rays at the park that is on the way on the way to the Metro. Then you can be back at the rink in plenty of time to grab a good spot for the scrimmage before the crowd arrives.

Off Topic
I’m sure some of you do or did comment on the Official Caps Message Board. Quick question – what the hell is happening over there?

What are you specifically referring to?

Anything But Hockey was the glue that held it together, apparently… now there’s a full-fledged revolution since they’ve “disappeared” it.

The Anything But Hockey part of the Caps message boards was eliminated about 1 1/2 weeks ago with no notice or explanation from the moderator. A pinned thread with an explanation from the moderator at the very beginning would likely have prevented what followed. Threads were started on the hockey side in which the OP asked the moderators why ABH was eliminated but received no response. Some e-mailed the owner and those folks received varying replies. The moderators have deleted the threads in which the ABH elimination was discussed or threads on non-hockey topics. Several posters have been suspended or banned, Today, it looked out of control as if the moderators took the day off and a few posters were doing their level best to get banned.

Caps Boards Now Shut Down
I had an email conversation today with Ted, and it led to the boards ultimately being shut down until the mod returns from vacation.
He first replied with what seemed like a canned response, and then I got this:
Wow—I just looked at the boards – really sad – now you understand our problem— these folks were posting crazy stuff— racial— porn— awful curse words— we would delete and suspend— they would open new accounts and on and on.
So a few criminals have polluted the water now for everyone.
Should we just keep banning people— or shut down all boards— or let community police itself with us doing some moderation?
I will personally get Warehouse banned asap. Ted
Then, I got this from him:
We had to shut down the boards in total as our mods will be on vacation for the fourth of July weekend—sad it came to that—we will do our best. Ted
So basically, he seemed out of touch with the way things were getting.
I guess that’s reasonable considering the boards have been running for so long without major issue. I think they (whoever “they” are) underestimated the backlash from taking down the ABH board.

As crazy as it can get there at times (I never posted there and when I finally wanted to enter the discussion I came here for sanity), there are/were plenty of people who posted there who seemed intelligent and sane enough. Way more so than some of the other teams’ boards that would occasionally get referenced. Of course, I never read the ABH side, so I don’t know what was going on over there.
Pity.

Unfortunately, since Vogel’s blog Dump & Chase and the Caps Media Blog are both served from the message boards, they’re both down as well right now.

i got sick of posting there because of all the doom and gloomers. Moved on to Caps Insider and which wasn’t too bad until last season and Japers. Thank god for SB nation. This new real time update for threads, with the ability for readers to post something relevant in a thread of their own is awesome.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

Thanks for the updates. Glad Ted stepped in and put an end to that nonsense.
Funny thing is that some of the people actually believed that they were the most important fans in the Caps fan base, and that if they closed the boards down that it would have a widespread effect on season ticket sales. That’s laughable! 150 riff-raff does not equal a revolution.
Thanks again, Ted!

moderation is was always the biggest problem on that board. I’d hope that they would implement community mods, who would naturally have oversite and some guidelines by the uber mods. Anytime there is faceless moderation just lends itself to spiral downwards.

I haven’t been to the Caps message boards in over a year. Seemed more prudent to beat myself about the head with a hammer than join in.

It got too cliquey and too much about non-hockey stuff. People were disrupting legit hockey comments with crap about they like jean shorts and pie. It appears that the 150 or so riff-raff on that board decided to form their own boards where they can post porn until they get sick of it.
Thank God for SB Nation and HF Boards. At least they stick on topic and don’t talk about crap all the time.

Clowe Signed by SJ
Clowe was resigned by the Sharks for 4 years at approx 3.5 per. I wasn’t against pickin ghim up at all. However, if you had to pay more than 3.5 million for Clowe, would you pay it?
by Hunky Dory on Jul 3, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think the Caps had $3.5 million to spend, honestly, and surely not for four years. I think Knuble is the better deal for the Caps, given the situation.

ok, but if they had the money (say Nylander disappeared) would Clowe be worth the 3.5+?
by Hunky Dory on Jul 3, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe? Knuble’s got more experience, and there’s probably not room for both since neither play C.
I don’t see Clowe as all that different from Laich to be honest. Less versatile but probably a better scoring talent. Not enough difference that he should probably be making a mil+ more, I guess.

Caps Message Boards: why all the worry over the "ABH" side?
I post, fairly regularly, on the Caps Message Boards. it’s usually just a ‘time-filler’ for me, or a way to ‘vent’ a particularly horrid Caps loss. I noted the rancor last week when the “Anything But Hockey” board was suspended. The Caps web cite is a hockey venue: if you want to talk other stuff, why not take it someplace else? Somehow, I doubt Ted has a huge revenue stream from those who post on the ABH boards. There are plenty of other places to post: OFB, Japers, Peerless — to name 3.
I’m sure Ted has figured out his season ticket base does not live and die by the boards. In fact, some of the regular hockey posters don’t attend that many games.
