Development Camp Scrimmage Tweets
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few days, you're well aware of how fantastic the online coverage of Development Camp has been, from beat writers and bloggers alike. But unless you're a Twitter user (follow us here, btw), you might not know what you're missing.
For a taste of the technology in action, we've pulled together a widget that's (hopefully) going to collect the Tweets from some of the folks who've been killing it out at Kettler all week and relay them to you in (approximately) real-time. Enjoy the scrimmage (which should start soon) through their Tweets and let us know what you think of the technology.
The widget is after the jump...

I’m kinda confused about Finley: is any of this hitting chatter about him good? I know he got leveled by SDR.
SO I don’t particularly think it’s good.

Does he compare well with anyone?

Doesn’t say anything about comparisons but he has had some nice hits, good poke checks, etc. Haven’t read anything bad about him.

Finley was the Jeff Schultz of the Sue. I beg of people to read the Sue fans fights over him, you could replace Finley with Schultz and it would be identical to the comments on TEB’s blog. http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?p=3822427#post3822427
IMO he might be too slow to compete at the NHL level. His best attribute might be his work ethic. There is also the fact that he is somewhat of a loose cannon goon. I’m not even going to bring up the mascot thing. He grabed and WWF wrestled Turris on the boards every game and did the classiest move in sports by puling Wheeler out of the handshake line. Also in general he commits some LAME penanties.
Full disclosure: I hate everything Sue related.

Nice.
I do recall several ND fans being disappointed when he didn’t turn pro and instead went back to school for another year.

He’s a love-em or hate-em kinda guy. Schulz + Grizzly Bear is a good comparison. This Sioux (notice the spelling d_fens) fan loved him. He’s a work in progress though, we’ll know more after a season in Hershey.

d_fens calls them the Sue because he’s clearly a fan of another WCHA team. Its like when people call a certain player “Cindy.” Its not that they can’t spell.

update
Orlov made some great hits. Levelled someone with textbook hip check. Can make up for mistakes with speed and skill
Finley almost killed Testwuide. Test had his head down and Finley absolutely blew him up. If Finley can catch you he will kill you
Perreault is a poor man’s Semin. Same kind of sneaky quick game only smaller and obviously not as good.
Eakin created 2 goals simply by skating away from everyone. He had the primary assist when his shot rebounded into the slot. On the goal he scores he was just gone in a split second, made a nice move and roofed it. No one could catch him.
Breuss has played hard but not mucj to show for it.
Someone- Mitchell I think- smushed Baby Gus into the boards and BG disappeared for a while after that.
No SDR.

It’s going to be real interesting to follow Carlson this year. The media that follow the Caps and the organization itself are usually pretty reserved but everyone seems to be gushing about him non-stop.
I really think Jurcina’s days in D.C. are numbered.
by David M. Getz on Jul 16, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sort of along that same thread, I think it’s interesting that ShaMo is still officially a Cap. Maybe he sees the talent coming up, and just wants to hang on as a bottom 3 D.
by DrinkingPartner on Jul 16, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m guessing he sees the Caps’ D corps and figures he’s the 3rd best guy on the team and has historically played well with Green, the etched-in-stone top pairing D. There will be a place for him on the Caps’ top D pairing and I hope they keep him around to fill it.
The Caps are in a position to trade defensemen, but I don’t think they’re in a position to comfortably trade away one of their top 3-4 D (unless they get one back). ShaMo taking his qualifying offer and BMo’s extremely reasonable salary have changed the dynamic a bit. If I’m a betting man, my money is on Juice to get moved.
by grapejoos on Jul 16, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the trading partners will determine which of ShaMo or Juice (or both) get moved. The team will no doubt demand more for ShaMo, but other teams may be willing to pay more to get him. Either way, I think both of them are available for the right price.
And what should make them attractive to other teams as the season draws near is that the Caps won’t probably require roster players for them. So if someone gets hurt on another team during training camp or some team just realizes they have a hole and need another NHL-caliber defenseman, they can trade picks or prospects to the Caps for ShaMo or Juice.
I don’t expect this to be sorted out before late September, but who knows.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 16, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To be cynical, he also realizes he’ll get a better contract if he plays well this year. He wasn’t all that good in 08-09
by David M. Getz on Jul 16, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure Carlson looks faster and looks like his hands are better because of the talent level. If Carlson could skate and stick handle better than green there would be no question about him being in the NHL. I think you can chalk up that analysis to lack of perspective.

Here’s my pop psych take on the overflowing Carlson love – one part deserved praise, one part compensation/denial about the speed at which Alzner is developing.

Interesting take. I have been expecting some Alzner-hating for a little while now but mostly because nothing he does is flashy. He’s not overly big. He’s not overly fast. He doesn’t create a lot offensively. He doesn’t hit a ton. That’s a recipe for some Capfan hating in itself. I didn’t really contemplate the possibility of a hype-transfer, but I think you may be right. Carlson is here now, wowing us by dominating guys below his level, but I’d bet Alzner is just at home, doing nothing flashy, working his ass off so that he doesn’t get pushed around by grown men next year.
by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 16, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I also think the 100 game season (when you add in preseason and postseason) just got to him. It’s normal — it happens all the time with young players. It’s one reason he ain’t at this camp — dude’s been playing hockey nonstop for almost 2 years because last summer was very full for him.
Alzner played very well for the Caps early in the year, and then played “tired” during the end of his stint with the big team. I think he’s learned something about what it takes to last a full pro season and how to pace himself out.
The dude is one of the smartest, most driven hockey players I’ve ever seen in an interview. Reminds me of His Excellency, The Ambassador or even more of Backstrom — the way those guys live and breathe hockey. I don’t worry too much about Alzner.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 16, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
good points. I don’t worry about him either, frankly. I just didn’t understand all the mouthbreathing last year and it still confounds me that these 2 guys aren’t even of legal drinking age, yet….

Definitely important to keep in mind. It sounds like he’s definitely beyond this level, and it sounds like he performed well in the AHL last year all things considered. If he was truly the best player on the ice at times during the Calder Cup finals, then it might be tough to leave him in Hershey for too long, but it’s hard to see how there is any room in DC until at least next summer.
