Schultz’s agent must read DMG religiously and is holding out for a Green-esque deal.

The team insists that he didn’t sign his QO. I’m believing them.

NHLPA
The NHLPA also lists him as unsigned:

If the Caps and the union say he’s not signed, he’s not signed. That said, I am sure there’ll be something worked out between the Caps and Schultz. He’s not going anywhere.
Let's go Caps!

QO-gate in reverse? Schultz’s agent taking notes from the Dale Tallon school of mail delivery?

dying to hear what fake jeff schultz has to say. from last night:
Only a couple hours to decide about this offer. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too much pressure. I’m gonna go rollerblade.

I can’t imagine the offer sheet the Caps would choose not to match.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 15, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, in theory: One that knocks them more than 10 percent over the cap. Which I think is not a serious problem/threat. (Off the top of our host’s head, I think WSH is $2.2M under with Juice unsigned.)
Or one that overpays him which is basically anything much over his QO. Caps could just cut bait and take the pick they’d get in next year’s draft as a result. Vancouver is probably still kicking themselves for matching the Flyers ridiculous offer sheet on a certain 3rd line forward a couple of years ago.
You mean Kesler? One of the top 2-way players in the game? Yeah, I’m sure they’re kicking themselves there…

Agreed – matching on Kesler was a no-brainer that has turned out great for VAN.

What I was trying to express is that I cannot imagine any team signing Schultz to an offer sheet that is too rich for the Caps. I would put that number at north of 3 Million per year, and I cannot imagine any team doing that.
For example, I believe the Caps would bitch and moan if someone tried him at 2.5 Million per year, but ultimately would match. And I can’t even imagine anyone signing him for that rich a contract. I think 1.8 would be possible, but very unlikely. But we’ll see — perhaps I lack in imagination.

If I’m Sarge, I don’t even blink before whipping out a pen and signing on for another tour. Does he forget the awesome #8 that plays on this team?!?! $700,000 (or whatever) is still not enough to buy a Stanley Cup, and unless he’s pulling a Hossa on us and trying to land in Pittsburgh this move makes very little sense to me. I just hope things are cool for him behind the scenes, I’ve heard about/been to far too many family emergency things lately to not consider that a possible factor.
To quote “3 bad brothers you know so well” (kinda)… GET ON THE BUS, SCHULTZ!

Weren’t there reports of Schultz being lonely and not hanging out with the team? I wonder if he’s looking to move elsewhere ….

Maybe, but there were also “reports” (i.e. rumors) than Ovechkin ran up a huge bill at a South African strip club when he was actually traveling between road games, that Jeff Goldblum died filming a movie in New Zealand when he was was in L.A., and that Barack Obama matched an anachronistic Biblical definition of the anti-Christ. Heck, every four days we hear that an Alex Semin to the KHL move is imminent.

I don’t really think that applies here.

That was a huge bill Ovie ran up though. That has been used as inspiration on a couple of stag parties I’ve been too.
That was a huge bill Ovie ran up though.
Wasn’t his. I forget the currency exchange rate at the time but I think the bill was something like 80-130 dollars U.S..
$80-$130?? That’s getting off easy… : )

This is getting slightly weird. From TEB:
In the past hour, I’ve spoken with two sources close to Jeff Schultz. Both of them indicated to me that the defenseman did, in fact, return his qualifying offer to the Caps.
The Caps, though, are steadfast. They say they have not received anything.
"Yes, It is a 'Beautiful Game.' It's because we see something meaningful that we hope to someday, somehow, see in ourselves."
Seriously. This is like the Chicago thing all over again, except the other way around and much less urgent.
I know hockey’s full of traditionalists but c’mon someone get a damn fax machine.

is there a motivation for the caps to claim the signature arrived late? do the caps think they can bring him back for less than the QO, and if so, would they be burning bridges with one of their “core young” players?
by Natty Bumppo on Jul 15, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Oops, my reply above to brs03 really should have gone here. So here it is again:
Totally weird. I don’t think the Caps have as much reason/desire to hold Schultz’s feet to the fire like the RFAs did with Chicago. If he really wants to take the QO, I doubt the Caps would balk at signing him for that amount.
Unless they think they can get him for less or want another 13-year deal I suppose
