Any interest in a Japers' Rink pickup game?

As a way to get a hockey fix over the summer, would anyone be interested in playing a pickup game with Rink members?  If we get about 20 people or so, we should be able to get some ice on a weekday evening for around $15 per person.  If there's enough interest, I can look into specific dates/prices to throw it together.

So...reply if you're interested, and if you have a preference of location.  I'm partial to playing in Rockville, myself, since there's usually ice available for a good price and you can bring adult beverages / tailgate in the lot afterwards, but I'm open to suggestion.  Also, I'm a goalie, but we'll need one more...any other netminders out there who would be interested?

Yes, please.

I vote for Laurel or Kettler.

I’d rather play in Laurel as well. We could do inline and ice there too.

by zephyr on Jul 16, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m definitely in, though I likely can’t get down to the DC area again until September rookie camp time. I play up here in NYC (our summer league is about to get underway)

I’d probably be in, and could almost certainly find some extra skaters.

Laurel is my closest rink but I could make it to Rockville if it wasn’t too close to rush hour.

I’m up for anything. I’m fine with Columbia, Rockville, Laurel, Reisterstown, Frederick, Hagerstown and maybe even Kettler if it’s a non-rush hour time, or on the weekend.

My primary position is goal, but I play any position. If no one else is burning to be in the pipes, I’ll volunteer.

I don’t skate, but if anyone wants to do a street hockey meetup, I’m down.

I’m down…for roller hockey.

There’s a nice rink in Alexandria if anyone else wants in

Id much rather play street/roller hockey. Ice requires too much equipment that I dont have yet

by amkcaps on Jul 15, 2009 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m up for street hockey. There’s a rink on Capitol Hill, at 12th & D, if there’s anyone nearby.

by katzistan on Jul 16, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d be interested in a pickup roller game, if you’d have me. I play roller out near Dulles, I know they let you rent out the rink after midnight for like $70 an hour. That’s pretty late and quite the trek though for a lot of folks.

You play at the sportsplex? My brother and friends keep trying to get me to join their league…but they are DEFINITELY in the wrong league : )

by Yoshietree on Jul 17, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

What team\division are you on? I play defense out in Dulles.

by zephyr on Jul 20, 2009 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Pepper— Where do you play? What team/div?

by tink on Jul 15, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

I’m playing in the 4-on-4 summer league at Chelsea Piers in D6 for Davis Polk.

by Stephen Pepper on Jul 19, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d definitely be down for this.

I’d be the second goalie as well.

by Mobsky on Jul 15, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry chockster, didn’t see your post. Do you have any preference? I wouldn’t mind playing out either.

by Mobsky on Jul 15, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll go ahead and bow out to you, Mobsky b/c here’s why — I don’t know when this is being proposed for and my work schedule is relatively inconsistent during the week, but weekends I’m fine. Additionally, if this is going to be during the final week in August, I’ll be in OC and can’t go.

Plus, my right goal pad is being repaired and the guy has taken a month and I need to check what’s the status is.

But, I’m here as another option if someone else falls through and my schedule is a go.

Jeebus

It’s been 4 years and several surgeries since I’ve played. And yet. . . I still want in. As long as nobody mocks me for being slow. :)

by D'ohboy on Jul 15, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

That’s how I feel. I haven’t played since breaking my ankle 6 years ago.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Jul 15, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish my ankle had been the only thing I broke. :)

It does suck though – once you’re out for a little while, it’s hard to get back in.

How ’bout this, if we BOTH go, I can bring a six-er of Kokanee (if I can find it), and we can get wasted on the bench if we really suck. Ok, better make that a 12-er.

:)

by D'ohboy on Jul 15, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I need time to restock on equipment. :D

I’m in. Prefer Kettler but can probably make it to any of the DC area rinks.

by Fehr and Balanced on Jul 15, 2009 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

kettler would be cool

but i havent skated in 9 years since two knee surgeries. i’m not even sure that i know how anymore

by twistedlogic on Jul 16, 2009 8:10 AM EDT reply actions

I’d be up for it. My only problem would be if we’re playing on Wednesdays. I can’t do it. Wednesdays for my job is the bread and butter day, no way around it. So, if it’s not Wednesday I’m in. Two torn meniscus and all.

by Bretzky on Jul 16, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

I play goal and defense. I suck at player though (low b level)

I could bring a few people of varying levels as well.

by zephyr on Jul 16, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

I’m a C/LW and would be down. I work 5 mins from Rockville, but, depending on when/where it is, I’m probably down with anywhere. Kettler/Reston/Ashburn are all a haul, though.

by DrinkingPartner on Jul 16, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

I notice that Tyler has not replied. That is a good thing. I suspect he would be the Ulf Samuelsson of the game.

by Moonage Daydream on Jul 17, 2009 7:47 AM EDT reply actions

If he’s Ulf, then that leaves two important questions:

a) Who is Cam Neely?
b) Who is Tie Domi?

by grapejoos on Jul 22, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m in… Laurel works best for me, but could make a trip down to kettler/rockville as long as it’s not rush hour.

by Scofield on Jul 17, 2009 9:11 AM EDT reply actions

I’m in, I haven’t played much ice hockey over the last few years, mainly roller, but I’ve got all the equipment and will give it a go…

by Knuckles O'hoolihan on Jul 17, 2009 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

It sounds like we have a mix of Roller vs. Ice. Why not have 2 games?

by amkcaps on Jul 17, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

i would love to get in on this. parents live in potomac so rockville would be alright, but i live in chinatown so kettler is probably closest. either of those 2 work

by _stevo on Jul 17, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions

Wow missed this post when it came out, so I’m a little late, but I’ll definitely be down for this!

by bigmac1124 on Jul 18, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

For those in the Howard County area, we play street hockey (on foot, ball) every Sunday afternoon at Alpha Ridge Park’s outdoor rink. Minimum equipment is a stick, which we do have a few loaners if needed. Suggested equipment is a set of soccer shinguards and hockey/lacross gloves. We have 2 goalies and normally play 4-on-4. We are looking for a few more players.

by Frank K. on Jul 20, 2009 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

What time do you guys play?

by amkcaps on Jul 20, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

5pm on Sundays. It is fairly casual gameplay – nothing terribly serious. Most of us work together so we try not to completely wreck on another.

by Frank K. on Jul 20, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I may commute to some of those, if my mondays are late starts. I could give you a third goalie, or another player.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Jul 22, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

We are all good on goalies…definitely need more people on foot. Especially with it getting warmer outside…and some of us getting older. LOL.

by Frank K. on Jul 23, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

i might be down for this.

by ns on Jul 23, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it looks like there is enough interest. Let’s start working on a time\place.

by zephyr on Jul 20, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

Slightly late to the party, but I would totally be game for this depending on where it is.

by Murshawursha on Jul 21, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

Ok, looks like there’s a decent amount of interest. I can call Laurel and Rockville later this week and see what’s available, and for what price. I know the best prices and availability are always for later in the evening on weeknights, so I’ll check with that first.

by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Jul 21, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like fun. Once we’ve got the where and when, I’ll be able to say for sure.

I’ve got a status update. I took a high stick to the face today at pickup. Went clear through, blood all over the darned place. Rushed to ER, got a half-dozen stitches in my face. So.. I guess the update is, I’m still good to play. =)

Ahh, to be a hockey player.
