Fehr and Schultz should take the offers in front of them… they’re very likely fair offers…
Let's go Caps!
Both of them are probably thinking longer term. Schultz especially is probably a guy that could get a 3+ year deal (not sure how many RFA years he has left?) if he wanted it, especially since he’ll probably never be a big bucks kinda guy.
Fehr’s the one is a tough spot. Coming off an eh season and injury, he doesn’t really have much negotiating leverage. Could see him wanting longer term in exchange for less money, but why? Otherwise, sign the QO and hope this is finally the year.
schultz mentioned today by the owner as one of four core defensemen for the future. the core d corps, you could say.

meanwhile, in la la land:
Now I have a little more hope about Schultz becoming a Pen.
I know he would be somewhat of a gamble (not a giant one due to his low salary), but I think he’s still got a bunch of potential. With ShaMo signed … it’s easy to think Schultz will be allowed to walk … and hopefully he walks into the Pens D-corps.
Truth is, he needs a fresh start. With the beating he takes on web boards and also at the games, new scenery would do him good.

Hey Pensfan98,

um … so how many d-men does this make and what’s the salary cap status after the dust settles? I gotta believe there will be a trade, if one hasnt been discussed with another team already …
The Capitals NHL-ready defensemen are:
Green
Schultz
Morrisonn
Erskine
Poti
Pothier
Jurcina (arbitration eligible)
Alzner (maybe)
So probably eight.
As for the cap, we should have that page updated for you guys pretty soon.
And because I am compelled to, I will mention that Carlson could also be in the mix. Sloan and Collins did not embarrass themselves in the NHL last year either. There will be teams this year who give regular minutes to someone who is less effective than Sean Collins or Tyler Sloan.

I wonder if we’ll have to wait until September to see a trade take place.

could shaMo be a piece to a trade deadline deal? particularly if alzner and/or carlson have bang-up seasons?

= RFA

Schultz didn’t sign; Fehr did
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Probably not about money, but about years (and perhaps one-way vs. two-way). It really wouldn’t surprise me to see him end up signing for less than his QO, but for one-way and two years or so.
I’d be shocked if Schultz signed for less than his Q.O.

He and his agent have clearly been reading a lot of the fine work done by the artist formerly known as DMG.

It depends what kind of leverage he has. Flash took less than his QO when he held out until camp in 07. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise for Schultz to hit the same situation unless he finds someone to sign him to an offer sheet or something.
yeah but flash wasn’t an established NHL regular at that point.

the TSN report being referenced above
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=284769
The Washington Capitals will have their biggest blueline presence back for next season. The club signed restricted free agent defenceman Jeff Schultz to a qualifying offer on Wednesday.
The 6’6", 221 lb. native of Calgary, Alberta will return for his fourth season with the Capitals. He appeared in 64 games last year, and tallied one goal and 11 assists. He missed 17 games with a broken finger, and 13 more games during the playoffs with an upper body injury.
The Capitals had first extended the qualifying offer to Schultz on June 29, but the player chose to explore his restricted free agency options on July 1.

Upper body injury = broken rib that made it physically impossible to turn back and make a play on Dubinsky in that situation.
Thank you, for this and the defense at OFB.

So if Schultz were to sign with someone else – do the Caps get anything in return? Is it the same RFA compensation or does that change after a QO?
Caps would have a chance to match, or would get the draft picks as compensation

Amount Compensation Due
$863,156 or less None
$863,156 – $1,307,812 3rd round pick
$1,307,812 – $2,615,625 2nd round pick
$2,615,623 – $3,923,437 1st and 3rd round pick
$3,923,437 – $5,231,249 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,249 – $6,539,062 Two 1st’s, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$6,539,062 or more Four 1st round picks
I haven’t seen updated numbers, but since the cap didn’t move much, I don’t think these compensation numbers will move much

you know, i had never seen this written out. 4 first rounders is one hell of a bounty in return for an RFA (although $6.54M is one hell of a bounty for the player).
by Natty Bumppo on Jul 15, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, you have to figure the only guys who would warrant such an offer would be the Ovechkin, Malkin, Crosby type of players finishing up their Entry level contracts.
Possibly a Semin or Mike Green who will still be RFA’s when their contracts expire.

green was the player i had in mind. kind of hoping he doesn’t hit such an astronomical salary, but i hear brian campbell is making $7.1M a year…
by Natty Bumppo on Jul 15, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Green the Caps need to match, Semin I’ll take the 4 1st rounders
by red army line on Jul 16, 2009 5:48 AM EDT up reply actions
So I picked the first team I could think of — Edmonton (because they put out an offer on Penner). And I decided to check out their first round picks from 2000-2003 (picking those years because we pretty much know how good those players are by now).
2000: Alexi Mikhonov
2001: Ales Hemsky
2002: Jesse Niinimaki
2003: Marc-Antoine Pouliot
Look, I know it’s just one anecdotal set of players, and I know McPhee, Mahoney & co would hopefully do better than that. But still, I think I’d rather keep Alex Semin than get four first rounders.
As another data point, the Caps got Trevor Halverson, Sergei Gonchar, Brendan Witt, Nolan Baumgartner and Miika Elomo with their compensatory picks from the Scott Stevens signing. In retrospect, I think most folks would have preferred that they keep Stevens.
If a player’s a proven star like Semin or Stevens, I think the picks ain’t worth it. If the player’s unproven like Penner, then maybe you let him go.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 16, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I suppose to other side of the coin is that you don’t have to use those draft picks to draft guys and if the question becomes ‘Are the Capitals better off with Semin or with whatever some combination of trades involving four first round draft picks and whatever prospects they don’t think fit their long-term plan will net in the trade market?’ I think you can certainly make the case that it’s the latter.
likewise, with the cap, teams will need to keep inserting new (i.e. cheap) talent to compliment the big money players. the salaries for 4 proven stars might tip over the boat, while a team with 3 proven stars and 4 extra first rounders can continue its circle of life.
