Wednesday Caps Clips: Happy Schedule Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Today at Development Camp: 10 a.m.: Group A on ice; 11:15 a.m.: Group B on ice; 3:30 p.m.: Intrasquad scrimmage.
- Day two of Development Camp...
- Anton Gustafsson (who will be on NHL Home Ice this morning at 8:25 and is pictured to the right via Caps In Pictures) credits Frolunda's veteran depth down the middle for his desire to cross the pond for the coming season. [In The Room, Washington Times]
- Joe Finley's media scrum from the other day is worth a look, and not just because he calls Jeff Schultz "highly talented." [FightingSioux.com]
- Practice coverage from Vogs (who notes highlights from Mathieu Perreault and Trevor Bruess), Peerless (with notes of interest on John Carlson, Dmitri Orlov and Francois Bouchard), Puckhead's Thoughts (who was impressed by Stefan Della Rovere's line).
- The Caps Media crew - I'm sorry, the Caps Dillman Award-winning Media crew - has gotten their hands on some killer technology and is putting it to use. [Welcome to the Show]
- Anton Gustafsson (who will be on NHL Home Ice this morning at 8:25 and is pictured to the right via Caps In Pictures) credits Frolunda's veteran depth down the middle for his desire to cross the pond for the coming season. [In The Room, Washington Times]
- The NHL schedule will be released at 3:00 this afternoon, but we already know one date: October 10 in Detroit. [MLive]
- Brent Johnson: not very bouncy at all (partial credit to the defense in front of him, too). [Behindthenet Blog]
- Everything you ever wanted to
shillknow about Capitals Convention. [OFB]
- Plenty on new Bears bench boss Mark French via Welcome to the Show and HHershey Bears Hockey.
- Sticking in Chocolatetown (but actually not), the "Mayor of Hershey" is headed west, opening up another spot on what will be a much younger and less experienced Bears blueline. [Patriot News]
- On this date in Caps history back in 2002, the team named Randy Carlyle and Glen Hanlon assistant coaches to Bruce Cassidy. How'd that work out for everyone?
- Finally, Happy 37th Birthday to Bryan Helmer (perhaps another soon-to-be former Bears rearguard) and Happy 54th Birthday to Mikko Leinonen, who apparently played three games for the Caps back in 1985.

Thanks for that reminder.

I’ll forever hold a grudge against Cassidy for the way he treatedCalle J.the Caps.
Fixed that for you.

Yeah, but
Our coach did win the Stanley Cup. Just not the head coach. And not with the Caps. But still…

Since we're on the topic of the schedule -
Does anyone know anything about partial season ticket plans? If you look deep on the Caps’ site, they do list 11 & 22 games as the apparent available plans (if/when they do release them), but they haven’t said a word about it. You can only find this on their Compare Plan Benefits page, and not the main Ticketing page. I emailed the ticketing folks about 3 days ago and I’ve yet to receive a response, so I’m leaning on you guys. I figured months ago that they wouldn’t bother selling them until after today (schedule release day), seeing as in the past they’ve always listed the games you’d be buying tickets for.
Anyway – has anyone heard anything at all? I’m sure they’re going to go quick when they finally do go on sale.
I think/thought that all of the season ticket packages were sold out for this year and that there is some sort of waiting list. I want to say I got a more detailed e-mail from our ticket rep about it, but here’s an OFB link…
http://onfrozenblog.com/2009/07/13/a-waiting-list-for-hockey-tickets-in-washington-you-betcha.html
Right, but full season tickets are not partial plans, and it was made clear (I read somewhere, not sure where) that season tickets only consist of about 14k? of the total 18k – reserve a couple thousand for partial plans and the remaining ones for individual sales.
don’t forget that the Caps don’t technically own the rights to sell the club level seats (as far as I’ve been told), and that they are controlled by the Verizon Center and investors and such (?).
Anyhoo, I’m pretty sure that those seats are not available to be purchased as season tickets (through the caps) but do obviously count toward the total capacity.
I have a feeling that if they do offer partial plans there will not be a whole lot available.
by PaintDrinkingPete on Jul 15, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, they are available as season tickets, just not through the club. I have a pair. Verizon Center Executive Level Seating sells them.
I’m glad I have them, but I wish the dough was going to the team.
Interesting. May I ask how much less than the $90/game face value do you pay when buying club level seats as season tickets? I’m in 116 now, but have always like the club level sightlines and less crowded concourse. I’m a sucker for arena carpet.
From the Verizon Center website:
Located on a private concourse, Acela Club Seat plans feature a variety of options and locations, including single team (Wizards or Capitals) as well as excellent seats for two team plans. A limited number of “one team” 2009-10 club seat plans for Capitals or Wizards are now available at a plan rate starting as low as $52.00 per seat/game.
Something to keep in mind. Don’t know what they mean by “limited number of one team plans”, but at that price you’re getting a pretty hefty discount off face value.
in the past, those seats when mostly to corporations, and when you bought the seat(s) you bought the seat(s) for every single event in the VC that year. You couldn’t buy for just the Wizards or just the Capitals or just the circus. There’s actually a lot of companies that have had seats there that have gone under or are in bankruptcy court, so won’t be upping their ticket packages. The VC probably wisely realizes that they’re more likely to be able to sell seats for just Caps game in this sort of economy.
I mean, at least from my standpoint, they leave clues everywhere about having partial plans:
1) “*We anticipate two pre-determined partial season plans to go on sale mid-June 2009 based on availability.” from the Benefits page. Obviously the timing is way off, but the fact remains.
2) They have the plan benefits listed.
3) They can rip partial plan holders off way more than season ticket holders (sadly) – they aren’t “discounted” from gate price, and this is seemingly what our new money hungry Uncle Ted is all about lately.
Don’t you think “money hungry Uncle Ted” is a tad (“Excuse me, just how much is a tad?” “About half a million miles.”) much?

Ah, that’s mild. Check out the message boards and the rants going on there about the price of tickets for the Capitals Convention. The Czar got better reviews before Lenin took over.
The Convention is going to cost $300k to host, and they expect 4k-5k people. Look at the ticket prices and do the math – it simply isn’t a cash grab.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
When I read that yesterday, I was surprised. I was looking at the size of the exhibit hall and figured the expected number to be at least double that. I didn’t think they’d limit it to the size of the ballroom and figured that not everyone would be able to get into the presentations. I was already going, but this information really impressed me.
My only issue is this…
Is this supposed to be a substitute for the STH event? If so, that’s crap. And I noticed they were holding the equipment sale there as well…which used to be a STH event as well and something I was really looking forward to, as a privilege; you know since I drop about $5k for tix.
In the immortal words of Mr. Horse; “No Sir, I don’t like it.”
It is more than a little frustrating for those of us who have had 6-game packs in the past to hear “Sorry, we gave your seats to someone who only gives a crap since we’ve started winning. But if you’d like to pay ten times more…”
I understand it from a business perspective, but it still sucks to realize we probably won;t be able to get to any games this year.
by Murshawursha on Jul 15, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions
I know it’s tough to be in that situation, but the math says 14,000 season tickets, 2,000 club seats, 2,000 seats held back for groups, partial plans, etc. (all rough numbers, obviously). So, yeah, someone loses out, but if there’s 2,000 people on the waiting list, they didn’t need to hold anything back. Sure, the revenue is greater from not selling them as season tickets, but there’s still a certain amount of public goodwill intended in the gesture.
There are always tickets available from season ticket holders on Washington Capitals Ticket Exchange. They are sold at a premium, but often not that much. Im lucky to be a full season ticket holder and am amazed at the number of tickets available there…you also get the tickets delivered via email, which is pretty convenient.
by Direction 87 on Jul 15, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah, quite honestly, when I stick my tickets up there, I’m just looking to make my money back and so I’m willing to under-sell a lot of people, and almost always less than gate price.
Same here, I am a STH but only go to about 8-10 regular season games each season. I sell the rest of mine off to friends/coworkers and would certainly prefer that the unused ones go to people here at Japer’s than some twit who can barely spell hockey. Or worse, some Pens/Flyers/Rangers fan online that I don’t even know.
Is everyone happy with the Capitals Ticket Exchange or should we hold our own ticket “redistribution” event once the STHs get their packets?

Is it a bit much? Maybe, but it’s not as if price gouging isn’t going on every time someone buys a beer at the phone booth, buys a jersey or pays for a student ticket. ($10 → $15, $25→$35 jump in one year) – he knows his product can make money, and he’s a businessman, but he’s starting to find the path to Snyderhood.
Now, by no means am I suggesting Leonsis is even CLOSE to Snyder. He’s not – plain and simple, but.. he’s been a lot more blunt lately that now that the seats are full, pampering the fans isn’t the number one priority anymore. That’s what I gather from it – opinions are like shit, and mine smells just as bad as anyone else’s.
Also, look around the league. Toronto — that’s price gouging…
by Gould Old Days on Jul 15, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Haha, I know we don’t have it that bad – at least Leonsis puts a good product on the ice annually now.
My concern is Leonsis while converting from “struggling to survive” franchise to “elite” franchise. I hope that he remembers it’s the fans that stuck through the worst years that got him there just as much as those players.
Ted and current ownership don’t make a penny off of Verizon Center food and drink sales, fwiw – that’s all Abe’s loot.

When I think about griping about food-n-drink prices at the Phonebooth, I close my eyes and remember back to when Chinatown was a gritty urban wasteland worthy of Bladerunner.
Dark, dirty, scary. Boarded-up storefronts. And a distinct feeling of being on the Wrong End of Town.
Abe Pollin had the vision to change that, and paid for it out of his own pocket.
Thanks, Abe.
Now, about those beer prices…
I’m pretty sure that the Caps are still near the bottom of the NHL in terms of ticket prices…AND if memory serves correct greedy Ted is still losing money on an annual basis.\

Every time I tried to go down for student seats, the onyl thing they’d have left were $46.00 club level. Which all things considered was probably a good deal, but not when we were only looking to spend $15…

Good lord people. So the Caps should just give tickets away for free if you’re in college? Get there early if you want student tickets, or buy some Eagles nest seats at the beginning of the year. They’re selling out because the caps are a good team and have a growing fan base.
My girlfriend and I paid $125 per ticket for upper deck seats in Toronto for a game back in December. We have it lucky here in D.C.

My way of coping is the silver lining. I can’t go to as many games but that additional income lets the team invest in facilities, scouting, etc, and lets the spend to the cap and I’d rather watch a Stanley Cup contender from my couch then a mediocre team from the VC.

The ideal would be to have a central place where people know to look when they want to buy or sell that is separate from the discussions. I have no idea how practical that would be though.

We could put up a page (like the salary cap page or the Hershey Hub) to serve as a spot for all of that (Japers’List? eJapers?), but I’m not sure there’d be sufficient reason for people to check it frequently.

Perhaps would could do a combination? Have a page that’s maintained by the site where you could email us and let us know you have tickets available (I volunteer to do it).
The page itself a table laying out available tickets: number of tix, locations, game, asking price, contact, etc. Then if you’ve something to add you can drop a line in the links thread, “Hey if anyone’s interested I have two tickets for Saturday’s game in section 410, check the ticket exchange page”.

Let’s say Nils Backstrom makes the Caps. What would the back of his and our Backstrom’s jerseys say?
N. Backstrom won’t work.
Neither will Ni. Backstrom.
Would it go all the way to Nil and Nic on the back? They may as well include their entire names at that point.
OK, so what happens if Nik Backstrom the goalie gets traded to the Caps? Do they start putting their hometown after their name?
I think at that point they’d assume we know them by their numbers. That, and the guy in the goalie gear is Nik :-p

My guess is that they will wear different numbers, so it shouldn’t matter.
On a serious note, I know the NFL had rules about this (having to wear initial if more than one surname on a team), but have since dropped them. Does the NHL have any kind of formal “rule” governing this, or is it up to the team/players?

My average long fanpost takes me about 3 hours. I do it because I enjoy it and because I’m interested in the topic. But I much prefer to read comments about what I’ve written than to see somebody bang out a 15 second comment that pulls the entire thread in another direction.

So if somebody busts their ass to bring you a new and interesting take on something, the least you can do is make them feel appreciated for doing it. Save the thread-jacks for the links thread, or a fanshot.

Remember that seen in Tootsie where Dustin Hoffman told everyone he was a man live on TV? This wasn’t anything like that.

i think about this almost every time i visit, GOD. and i’ve seen way too many of my favorite blogs shut down after a year or two because of the amount of work necessary. it is one of my worst fears that i will wake up one morning and see a post like this here at japers’. a so rarely is such a great service also completely free. and with the new site, we all have a chance to make it even better. the onus is on all of us.

I don’t think it matters. I think what matters is that the community would appreciate some increased self-restraint from certain posters.
To include yourself? Zing…sorry had to throw that into the fire :)

Tangentially related, there is nothing wrong with writing a comment and then clicking “cancel” if you decide it doesn’t really add to the discussion in a way that anyone really wants to hear. I do it all the time, and it can prevent clutter like this (even if this is the place for clutter).
For clarity, Tyler, not directed at you (or anyone in particular).
well, the horse was kind of dead and then it got brought back to life today, so J.P. does have a point.
I would also counter his point that if not for being (unfairly?) targeted for numerous previous comments, you might not have burst onto the scene with a chill the F out message.

Yawn. You’re not a target and you haven’t “inadvertently” drawn “the ire of a few people who comment here.” Come down off the cross.

I’m just about done with this for today, but, to clarify, SG commented, I replied that I’m not sure I buy the entirety of his comment, you asked what part I didn’t buy, I explained what part I didn’t buy. Seems like a pretty clear line of discussion, but I could be wrong.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No, what I am saying is relax. Take a deep breath and calm down.
No one is jumping up and down and screaming or anything, we’re just saying “We recognize that people are going to want to discuss a lot of hockey-related topics with the Japers’ Rink community, including ones we haven’t written anything on. We are flattered by that and we encourage it but we’d appreciate it if we could keep it to one specific area so the site stays well organized”. That’s all.

Pure repost from earlier Lil Gus thread...
But I said this:
I didn’t like the way he spoke on Masisak’s page about why he came over to Hershey. He said something to the effect of (paraphrased) "Frolunda is bringing in older and better players than I am. I will never get a chance to play!"
That bothers me, personally. I know he’s no Backstrom, and was never really expected to be, but I can’t imagine 1) Backstrom feeling that way, and 2) Backstrom getting beaten out for a job, even at 16 in the SEL. Gus is 19 and hasn’t even played in the SEL, yet.
I hope he’s good, but that leaves me with a weird taste…
by DrinkingPartner on Jul 15, 2009 9:56 AM EDT reply actions
fwiw, Backstrom didn’t play in the SEL until he was almost 17 and that year he only played 19 games and didn’t register any points.
Trade him for a 5th Round pick!

Imagine it. Or, rather, realize the difference in situation. Backstrom was by far the best European prospect when he was drafted, Gus isn’t nearly as highly regarded.
As I said in the other post, ask the Flames how happy they were about Backlund’s situation last season in the SEL. Rookies don’t get the kind of playing time they need, so unless they start in the SEL early (like Jo, Backstrom, etc.) it’s kind of a waste of their future.
So uhm, not Caps-related, but...
How bout them Blackhawks? Anyone else getting a sort of Emperor Palpatine vibe from Scotty Bowman? xD
hey, as long as that three ring circus keeps Havlat tweeting like a little bird, I’m happy. Makes for some good mid-day reading material.
I wonder if we’ll ever get the real story there…

If that whole fiasco really went down because McDonough didn’t feel like he was getting enough credit… Seems like a rather high-stakes game to play for the sake of one’s ego.

It worked out for Carlyle..
A few years later he’s the head coach in Anaheim winning the Stanley Cup…
Let's go Caps!
Kinda my point – one went on to win the Cup (elsewhere), one is in Finland, the other an assistant in the A (the latter two after being fired here, though, in fairness, coaches are hired to be fired to a certain extent, and I really am happy with what Hanlon did here through the toughest times).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
07-08 was nice at the end because a) The team had the hard work ethic instilled by Hanlon, and b) They had Boudreau’s offensive style. Lost the hard work over the offseason I guess, and hopefully Knuble helps bring it back.
by red army line on Jul 15, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Hanlon did a great job of shepherding a young team through downright depressing times without letting them get broken – no easy task. I have an enormous amount of respect for him, I just don’t think he’s a championship-caliber NHL head coach. Then again, I probably wouldn’t have thought Dan Bylsma was either…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Dan Bylsma, as far as I’ve seen, certainly not without a considerable amount of talent and superstar talent. Other coaches make do with less, which is more impressive, but don’t win the Stanley Cup, which is what matters.
by red army line on Jul 15, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Amen. Hanlon didn’t seem to know how to get the team to take the next step but he did well with what he had to work with and taught the guys how to work their tails off.

So, if they were unhappy with their QO, I’m going to assume that they would also be unhappy with less money. I seem to remember that it’s too late to go for arbitration, so at this point what possible benefit would their be to NOT signing a QO?
by Murshawursha on Jul 15, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions
There are also non-crazy reasons to take a voluntary pay cut. Like, you know that if you don’t, you won’t make the team. Rare, but it happens.
by Gould Old Days on Jul 15, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions
And for a couple of these guys (Wilson and Pinnizotto at least), they may be willing to take less for a one-way deal (i.e. their AHL salary would be higher, but their NHL salary lower than if they took the QO). Not sure why they wouldn’t work out a deal by now, though, if that was the case.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
They could also be negotiating over years – maybe Wilson wants two years at the QO salary and the team only wants to give him one or something like that.
Gotcha… didn’t think about the whole multi-year thing, but given that the player isn’t allowed to sign anywhere else, I can’t see a holdout being particularly successful…
by Murshawursha on Jul 15, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
What about taking less to play with the club? The Caps aren’t obligated to sign their RFAs, are they?
by red army line on Jul 15, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I think now that the QOs have been issued, the Caps have to keep anyone who signs it. But yeah, they don’t HAVE to issue QOs to everyone.
by Murshawursha on Jul 15, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I mean if the QOs are not signed, then the player is still RFA indefinitely?
by red army line on Jul 15, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes. There’s a cutoff point for when they can still sign and play this season (some time in the fall I think), after that they can’t play but they’re still RFAs and the team retains their rights.
The only way to lose an RFA’s rights, other than outright not qualifying them, is to walk away from an arbitration award.
Depends who you are. If Kessel insists he wants $4 million a year and strongarms the Bruins he might get the money somewhere, even if it’s not Boston, for example.
Via a trade or offer sheet I’m assuming? Either way, the Bruins would still get something out of it, though I guess with a guy like Kessel it would be harder to break even.
I feel like in our siuation, though, none of the players would have a whole lot of leverage.

“ce n’est rien” if you use the proper double negative. But consider the laziness of Europe and you see why the French don’t use the “ne”
by red army line on Jul 15, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
My understanding is that ‘rien’ means ‘nothing’ and thus to say ‘ce n’est pas rien’ would be equivalent to saying ’it’s not nothing’ in English.
that’s why there’s no “pas” in ce n’est rien. “ne rien” acts as the negative.
Rockin' the Red in Section 412
ne pas
ne rien
ne personne
ne jamais
ne nulle part
And the list goes on. You can combine them too, like ne jamais rien

Per Corey’s Twitter (@CMasisak22):
Shaone Morrisonn, Chris Bourque accepted their QOs, Steve Pinizzotto signed a two-year contract.
No word yet from Fehr, Schultz on their QOs.

Alas, friends, there will be no winter classic for us: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Any-guesses-about-this-announcement-at-Fenway-Pa?urn=nhl,176718
Now I need to come up with a new excuse to not spend New Years with my family. sigh.
Massive bummer. I definitely wouldve gone up to Boston. Then again, why should we be distracted by this? Either way im not too happy or too dissapointed
right now, I’m easily distracted because people here are work are being stupid and I’m stuck here waiting for them to complete stuff that should have been done a week ago. If I had known this, I would have said “screw this” and gone to D camp. Instead, I’m bored, irritable, and tracking down anything related to hockey to make the time pass.
Guess we’ll have to wait until 2011 to see Ovechkin drill Malkin through the glass at the Steelers’ home turf.
