"It was pretty serious. The only reason I took exception to the mascot was he was 'sieving' the goalie right in his face. ...the next day we were passing [each other] and he shouldered the goalie in warmups. So I looped around and gave him a tap. That's about it."

Admittedly, that’s the type of man I’d want protecting my goalie. I just hope he can bring out a little more Chara and a little less Gill.

Chara didn’t become Chara until he was 25 or 26, at least, until some time into his OTT tenure.
Finley just turned 22. I think that in the best-case scenario he sees his first NHL time when he’s 24.
I agree with that. Watching the interview of Finley on the Caps site I was impressed by his maturity (although that won’t help his foot speed) and I particularly liked his response to being asked about returning to college. He mentioned that guys in his frame develop slower and that he wanted to take as much time as he could working on his game and wasn’t in a rush. I think a lot of first round picks tend to overlook their weaknesses and focus on what got them drafted rather than acknowledging their weaknesses. I’m glad that Finley recognizes the long battle he has to get to the NHL.
Sorry, that just can’t compete with the hampster dance .
Hope that doesn’t count as derailing the thread.
Good on him if that was what the mascot actually did. The shoulder contact is a no-no and that fella is fortunate he came out of it with all his teeth.
On the footspeed issue, I know there is coaching and training that will improve it but if the instinctual/physical can’t keep up…even Hershey may be a stretch. Time is on our side though—no reason to cast him off.
Chara, if for no other good reason, will be a generational measuring stick for the ‘big man’ on D in hockey…I’d love to get Kareem, but Shawn Bradley is more likely.
