It’s an NFL contract! Then, when they buy him out in 3 years, they’ll have to pay him relatively small amounts for the following 16 years…
by Gould Old Days on Jul 1, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Since he’s under 35 they can get out of the cap hit after his best days are done. You’re going to seee a lot of deals that seem long with the final 2 or so years at a low salary to make the total cap hit average out to as low a number as is possible
I find sometimes it's easy to be myself
sometimes I find it's better to be somebody else
That’s exactly the reasoning. Ease him into the NHL game, provide some guidance…kinda like what Nylander was supposed to do.

Darren Pang sliding right back into form, slurping Scott Gomez. How is that guy on TV?!!?
first thing that’s made me laugh reading PD in weeks. The trademark snark has turned into nasty and vicious stupidity of late.
That seems like a good fit for both sides if Chicago has a plan to manage the cap two+ years down the road.

TSN reporters
All TSN’s plugged-in aces are in the studio. Why are they tossing to these underinformed ‘reporters?’
Well he passes up on all the money and secure offers last year for the best chance to win a cup. Now this Detroit wants to resign him but just for less money\time and now he is going to the Blackhawks. Do you really think the Blackhawks have an excellent chance of winning the cup?
Just seems like an odd road he has taken.
yes, i think Chicago is a very very strong team. stronger than the Caps.
by ns on Jul 1, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Priorities change. It may be that case that Hossa wanted that huge, long-term contract at some point in his life for (additional) the financial security and he was willing to put it off for a year, but not more.
If someone offered me a contract to play ECHL hockey for a year, I’d do it for a year or two, but I wouldn’t derail my real career for it.
Not only do I think the Hawks have an excellent chance of winning the cup, but I believe that they are a more “playoff ready” team than the Caps.
Just another thing for everyone to ponder this afternoon….

Bouds tee’ed off at 6:40 am (!) And did not playing in the 4-some with Tiger, because Tony Romo and that vapid blond of a girlfriend of his are soooo much more interesting.
I wonder if Woods realizes that bringing the Dallas quarterback to DC to partner with him is a slap in D.C.’s face.

This isn’t hating someone because of a jersey, DMG. The courtesy is to select someone from the home team, just as a rock star wears a jersey from the local sports team when they play in a town. It’s an image and a message thing that Woods is wilfully ignoring.
I like the “moderately disrespectful/ignorant” moniker. That’a fair.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Even if it was another team, did it have to be Dallas? Of course, Tiger being willing to win a tournament he hosts says that he doesn’t really understand the whole appearances thing.

So that’s just over 7.5 M per each of those 7 years. Sounds more right. Hell of lot easier to buy/trade him out after that too, especially to a low-budget team.
Don’t they have to resign both Kane and Toews in the next 2/3 years? I’d imagine they’d want that kind of money as well….
Is it really to the benefit of either the players OR management to limit these front-loaded contracts in some way? Players get paid more up front, and the teams get to keep their cap hit low. Somehow I don’t see this going away. It does make a bit of a mockery of the whole idea of the cap in the first place though.
I think you can make the case that it hurts the lower-income teams by allowing high income teams to (in a sense) circumvent the cap by having a payroll that’s way over the cap number.

From the WaPoCI. Did I just witness speaking before thinking, or is it me?
Does anyone else think the NHL should cap the term length for deals? This is getting ridiculous…how can anyone predict what is going to happen to the game/player 10-15 years down the road? We might not have a cap in 10 years. We might not have a league in 10 years. This whole concept of front-loading contracts to fit talent in under the cap is being abused by GM’s – it’s dangerous for the game.
Hossa deal is 12 years at $62M and very front-loaded.
Posted by: patrone | July 1, 2009 2:17 PM | Report abuse
Question about front-loading…can someone explain to me the effect front-loading a contract has on the cap hit?Do you just take the amount of the contract, divide by the term, and you get the cap hit? Or does front-loading a contract mean a higher cap hit in the early years and less of a cap hit in the latter years?
Posted by: patrone | July 1, 2009 2:20 PM | Report abuse
I’d be against the NHL limiting the length of contracts, but I’d be in favor of them making it so that salary could only decrease 10% from one year to another or something like that.
Right now you can’t go down any less than 50% from one year to the next.

They have a hole in the position now, and McPhee said he’s trying to resign Johnny.
I think Johnson’s agent is saying it, McPhee isn’t (or hasn’t that I know of).
From CI
*McPhee also said he will continue to negotiate an extension with Brent Johnson. To me, that means he’s still open to trading Jose Theodore.
Yes, I suppose. After I read it again, it doesn’t necessarily say he’s trying to resign him, just negotiating.
I think he could try, yes. And that he may be.
But I still would like to see JT60 return. I can’t imagine that even if Varly wins the job that he starts more than, say, 52 games next year. What was that stat we talked about a few weeks ago? He’d never played 52 games in a year in his life? Something like that?
True. And obviously he’s about out of money to address that position should Huet falter. He’s going all-in and he thinks Cristobal Huet is the nuts.

No no
I mean, Knuble made $2.8 on his last contract. I’m surprised GMGM gave him the same money. I would’ve thought something closer to $2 would have been more in line with the Caps cap. Not to mention his money will count against the cap no matter what happens due to his age.
Kozlov cost 2.5, so that’s the majority of the signing right there. I think it’s a great pickup and I can’t complain about the pricetag.
I go away for Dog Treats and the Caps sign Knuble!

Knuble for Kozzie- well done.
What’s the deal with Kovalev? Kovalev for Feds might be worth considering.

To bring back, who? Not just cap space, i’d hope, otherwise we’ve already missed out on Hossa.
by DrinkingPartner on Jul 1, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think we missed out on Hossa. Even if the Caps wanted him they wouldn’t have been prepared to offer a contract to the length he wanted.
Why not?
That’s the new way to get your cap # down to a manageable level. We all know he’s really getting paid $7.5 while he’s still “effective”. Shit, if this had been in vogue when we resigned Ovie he might have had a 20-year contract and the cap hit would only be $7 instead of $9+
Who would you sign, given Theo’s cap-space?

well in my dream, Gaborik signs with us to a 1 year deal, to rack up incredible numbers and miraculously not tear a groin on VC ice.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
oh, and he also signs for some ridiculously small amount of money,

Paul Kariya did that once, signing for less than $1.5M to try to win the Cup with the Avs (and with Teemu)… didn’t work out so good.

So not DC, but suburban systems. Less stress on infrastructure.

Montador going to Buffalo made Spacek expendable. Komisarek was likely gone after the Habs picked up Gomez’s contract.

There’s a reason his name is Space-K. He’s from outer space, and apparently, so is the management in Montreal.

…for $15M over 4 years ($3.75M per)… less than Theo, way less than Huet.
Less than Spacek, too…

But one who is more consistent than most out there, has a Cup ring, etc. It’s a bargain for Edmonton

So if he’s more consistent and has a cup ring, why are you comparing salaries to someone who, well, doesn’t?
Because I would have thought that Khabibulin would have got something more than that from Edmonton (or anyone else)… probably about $4.5 M

Yeah, I think he should have gotten at least 4. Maybe he took less money to get a longer contract? He’s probably happy to be back in Canada and on a team that won’t try to waive him after training camp.
Huet?!
Is Chicago really putting that much faith in Huet for next season?
Do they have some kind of Varlamov/Neuvirth in the wings?

Does anyone else feel pretty happy with just getting Knuble?
This feels like we filled one of the glaring holes and maybe, just hopefully, we’ll see a whole new Nylander come out of training camp to fill the second line center roll. If not, it feels much more reassuring knowing we only have 1 hole left to fill internally.
Absolutely.
Although it spoils DMG’s bid to play wing for less than Mark Recchi.
From the list of availables, it didn’t look like were were going to get a 2C in free-agency, regardless. Getting a guy that will park in front of the net on the PP and a bit of grit for the playoffs makes me a happy camper, irrespective of what other teams are doing.

Can we get the Megan Fox soundboard to say that?

Very much so. My figures suggested that the Caps had about $3M to play with in free agency, and this spends most of that. Spends it well, I think, based on past performance and needs, but spends it all the same.
Now I go to Kettler for development camp and watch the centers.

GMGM doing a phone interview on CSN right now. Says the Caps are basically done with free agency unless something unexpected pops up. May do small moves but the Knuble signing is probably it for the Caps.
