It's Offical: Kozlov to the KHL

[According to the following press release posted today on Salavat Yulaev's home page, Viktor Kozlov has just signed a 3-year contract with the KHL team. h/t Sovietsky Sport ]

VIKTOR KOZLOV CONTINUES HIS CAREER WITH UFA

HC Salavat Yulaev has signed a 3 year contract with forward Viktor Kozlov.

Viktor Nikolaevich Kozlov is a student of the "Lada" hockey school. He was born on February 14, 1975 in Togliatti. He plays a center forward position. In the 1993 NHL draft he was chosen sixth overall in the first round by the San Jose Sharks. On 13 November 1997 he was traded to the Florida Panthers, and on 1 March 2004 to the New Jersey Devils. On 13 September 2006 he signed with the New York Islanders as an unrestricted free agent. His last few years have been with the Washington Capitals.

Viktor Kozlov has played 16 seasons in the NHL, playing in 897 games and accumulating 537 points (198 goals and 339 assists). Last season the 34 year old forward played 67 games, where he garnered 41 points (13+28), which placed him in sixth place among Washington point scorers.

UPDATE (1:00 PM): Our buddy Dmitry Chesnokov is hearing that the deal is worth "around $2m per year."

UPDATE (2:44 PM): Dmitry has a nice interview with Kozlov here.

Less taxes (to none) from what I hear and no stupid escrow…but still. I feel like he could have gotten that on an NHL team. I guess he is uprooting his family from FL?

I thought I remembered reading that they all want to stay there but that was when he was with the Caps.

Never mind…read the interview JP posted below. He said he just wanted to go back to Russia and that he had been wanting to go back since before he signed with the Caps.

Fingers crossed for Knuble

Although I’m guessing Clark or Fehr are the default options.

by brs03 on Jun 9, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

At first I liked that idea too but….

Mike Knuble: Born 7/4/72. Will be 37 next season.

Viktor Kozlov: Born 2/14/75. Will be 34 turning 35 halfway through next season
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=477

Knuble just completed a 2 year, 2.8 million per year contract. Would he sign for 2 million or less for the chance to play with Ovechkin/Semin? Would we want to sign a guy that old?

by Whiter Mage on Jun 9, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think the fact that Bertuzzi’s attack came during a game makes much of a difference – sucker punching a guy and driving his face into the ground (ice) is sucker punching a guy and driving his face into the ground even if it happens in a game which, to me, is a lot worse than being a moron. Just my two cents.

It’s a fair argument. I’m going to let it go, because this is not a “Why does WM hate Heatley so much” thread.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Jun 9, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but look at his stat line. 82 games played 4 out of the past 5 seasons. If we can sign him for Kozlov money (and, I’ll admit, I’ve got no idea how realistic that is) or so then I think he’s worth the risk on a one-year deal, especially if there are incentives added.

He’s basically everything we probably hope Clark or Fehr can be, except less of a long shot (in terms of getting what you pay for). IMO of course.

by brs03 on Jun 9, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as I ripped him, he wasn’t that bad. I hope he wont be missed.
And his break away goal vs the Rags in game (6?) where he ran over Lundqviest was a thing of beauty. That’s the memory I’ll keep of him.

by gfcaps fan on Jun 9, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

semin for heatley, please. or maybe in another year? all i’m reading was that the heatley contract was “extremely frontloaded,” so maybe he’s a bargain in the final years of the deal. averages out to $7.5 mil/season, though. steep.

front loaded? Yes. Extremely front loaded? No

Final years would be 8, 8, 8 and 6 million. 7.5 million cap hit for anybody who trades for him.

I think Ottawa isn’t living up to its part of the bargain, and Heatley is calling them on it. Things must be pretty bad on that team if players are bailing this early. They tried to blame it all on Emery, remember?

All in all, I’m having mixed reactions to Kozlow leaving. On the one hand, he’s solved a problem and opened a slot on the team for improvement. On the other hand, the team has been so much fun to watch, and they seem to have so much fun together, that it’s sad to see anyone go.

He’s going on his own terms, so you can’t beat that.

by gfcaps fan on Jun 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

I’m really sad to see him go. We had a real Russian 5 going! I was hoping this would be the year because I had a feeling Brash, Kozlov and Fedorov would all be gone. I just liked this group of guys and exact lineup more than any other group of Caps, as a whole, in my life.

We hopefully get better as a team but as a hardcore fan you do feel like you lose a good friend when a player you like moves on.

Yeah I hear ya on feeling the growing pains… from trading Bonzai to seeing Kolzig leave; not that Kozy’s on that level but he’s there with Feds for me. I feel like they came in and their help will make more of an impact than they ever did on the ice.

by MetalCap on Jun 9, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Kozlov the man and Kozlov by the numbers were never really the same person.

I just know when he had the puck in the O zone I felt it was in capable hands that weren’t going to give it away or make a bonehead play with it and I just might see something incredible (even if it wasn’t a scoring chance).

I thank him for his contributions and wish him well as any true Caps fan would

by Icebat on Jun 9, 2009 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

I’m having a serious problem with this. It will be hard for Ovie without Kolov, not to mention the unthinkable – if Fedorov leaves as well. I’m also bothered by the way this is happening. I see parallels to Kolzig’s departure. What hurt Kolzig, he said later, was the silence. The Caps management never acknowledged him, not even to say thanks but no thanks. He thought from their silence that they would just let the deadline pass. The Russian players saw that, and perhaps they think they are being treated to the same cold shoulder. If there were any communications, Fedorov’s agent would not have issued a thinly veiled ultimatum recently in the form of a media statement, there would have been no need to do that. So this mock surprise by GMGM (“nobody told ME that he signed with them!”) seems disingenuous at best. But could Mr. Chesnokov perhaps shed some light on why the Russian teams are putting such pressure on our guys (yes, “our” guys, at least Fedorov felt pretty much at home here) to sign? Fedorov was feeling it at the break, and he underscored the urgency several times after the playoffs. Why such a hurry? Are the economics such that they have to commit before the money is gone, does the KHL have a different calendar that must override our free agent deadline, or do the organizations running the Russian teams have hidden agendas? It would be interesting to know this. And if Mr. Chesnokov does have the opportunity to speak to Fedorov in the (very) near future, I hope he will pass this along: Please Come Home to Washington! Whatever you do.

by FlyingCloud on Jun 9, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Well, according to Dmitry’s article Kozzy knew the Caps wanted him to stay:

Did you have any offers from the NHL?

via dmitry’s interview, the caps did make an offer. and you’re not getting kolzig-like quotables, either. kozlov has said for a while now that he could see himself returning to the KHL and that he enjoyed his time there during the lockout.

Cuqui, Natty, thank you for shedding light on this — I was unable to open the interview. At the same time, I’m reasonably certain of Kolzig’s comments. But at the same time as that time, I also recall seeing several comments by Kozlov about his looking forward to returning to Russia. The bottom line, I suppose, is that I don’t like change. Making it my problem. I will try not to over-react in future….Nurse! Time for my anti-depressants!
