Nylander to the KHL, Updated
A week and change ago, we mentioned a rumor that KHL team Avangard Omsk was interested in acquiring Michael Nylander. Now it seems that there may actually be something to the rumblings.

wow. That would certainly be something of a minor miracle. I am not holding my breath though.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
“Water to wine” was a minor miracle by comparison. This would put GMGM on the fast track to canonization.
But I agree… still not enough smoke to shout “fire.”

…And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, “O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy.” And the Lord did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu… [At this point, the friar is urged by Brother Maynard to “skip a bit, brother”]… And the Lord spake, saying, “First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.” Amen.1
Edmonton is Paris, London and Bangkok wrapped into one compared to Omsk. I’m betting the wife would nix this if it ever got very far.
someone mentioned proximity to Sweden, so Nyles could work in Russia and family stay in the motherland…
makes sense

However, Omsk is half the distance to Stockholm that D.C. is. Mama Nylander has made it clear she requires quick access to the fams in Sweden, thus, living in Omsk would cut travel in half (assuming flying there isn’t an asspain). However, don’t know about raising kids in Siberia, would think she’d take the brood and set up shop in Sweden somewhere.
So Cluster – this based on first hand knowledge? Mrs Nylander’s wishes and preferences or just more supposition and conjecture like the rest of us?

Camilla is my bestest Facebook friend, and we’ve known each other for……..oh darn, busted.
Can’t even sneak a harmless four line blog comment past ya Markbona, you devil you. But seriously, put the badge away. The article that generated this whole thread is barely past “conjecture” and “speculation”, so its understandable that we’re all in a furball and spouting nonsense about Nylander and what might happen.
Baseless furballs are standard summer entertainment on a hockey blog. :)

I’m both amazed and mildly horrified that you looked at that long enough to determine that. :)

Hey it’s an easy 30 hour drive and I hear there’s not a big backup at the boarder crossing like on the Mexico – US boarder….LOL Anyway it’s fun to think and talk about on an evening when there are no games on….

I’d bet that getting from Omsk to Stockholm would take about the same time as from DC. There are certainly no direct flights.
Take into account low on-time percentage of flights inside Russia, typically quite long border/custom checks in Russian airports, 3+ hour flight from Omsk to Moscow, couple of hours connection time, 2.5 hour flight from Moscow to Stockholm — here we’re at 8 hours already…

Of course, the Mrs. will not be flying coach.

Maybe or maybe not. Last summer Nylander was on my flight from Chicago to Stockholm. He sat in economy. Of course he was traveling by himself.

A big test for Caps Nation, which now must come together and collectively will this to happen. TODAY. Just picture Nyles and Jagr driving to the games together in Siberia. They look happy don’t they?
I see, I see
Why look, they are pulling in to the local Dunkin Donuts on the way to the rink (yes, yes, the brand new Omsk DD). I see BIG smiles on their faces, too.
mmmm….donuts…is there anything they can’t do?
More good news!
For Mrs. Nylander’s home decorating needs, she’ll be glad to hear that IKEA has opened a sparkling new facility in western Siberia. Currently, items are 30% off
I think by waiving him, loaning him, or suspending him without pay getting him to Russia wouldn’t be all that difficult, but when you take family into account it seems horribly unlikely. First off his wife has proven to be a royal pain in the arse when attempting to get him to sign a contract, and secondly you have to think of his kids. “Hey kids I know you’re probably just starting to get settled here, but what would you say to moving to a frigid country hundreds of miles from your friends where you don’t speak the language?” I feel like that might be a tough sell….
Sure is and all this conjecture is clearly based on solid first hand knowledge…..LOL

…all I can say is that we should be so lucky.
No, seriously. I think Nylander to the KHL would be the best thing for the Caps and the best thing for MN92 and his family. He’d get to play, he’d be valued in a system he can work with, and we’d be free of his NMC and cap hit.

As much as I would love that the Caps be rid of that massive contract, I’m just having a hard time seeing it happening, and that’s without all the “Mrs. N is craaaaaaaaaazy!” stories. The older Nylander kids all go to school in the US, if I’m not mistaken, so that the family can live together (there’s at least one too young for school). Nyls going to Russia means either the rest of the family stays in the US so the kids can continue school, the rest of the family goes to Sweden so the kids can go to school there, or you move them halfway around the world to southern Siberia and say “Ok, learn Russian!” so the family can stay together.
No worse than Mrs. Pronger I’m sure …

There is now even a report that Nylander’s brother plays with another Russian team. Okay, not Omsk but a nearby city. So at least he has family there. Not to mention Jagr.
Yes, Nylander wanted a no trade clause. Yes, it’s a millstone around the Caps’ necks but I can’t blame the guy for wanting some stability. (I grew up in a family that moved a lot. So did my husband. Maybe that’s why we’ve stuck in the same place.)
With a brother in the area and Jagr, the situation isn’t as bad over in Russia for him as it could be.
And he wanted to play with Jagr so very much. The two just worked together well and Jagr needs to feel comfortable. With Cherry’s death, he has had a rough time over there.
And Omsk tried to get Marty Straka too so they could get the whole band back together but Straka was just made president of his club after investing some of his NHL dollars in it and is the best player in the Czech league so he wouldn’t go. Guess Nylander will have to be good enough …

I’ve heard that if you live in Sweden, you can see Russia from your house.

the worldwide leader in rumors
in case no one else noticed, ESPN.com has now credited Japers’ Rink for each bit of Nylander-to-the-KHL news. this from today:
KHL trying to get Nylander out of NHL contract?
Michael Nylander | Capitals
Caps forward Michael Nylander still has an NHL contract, but a KHL club says they wants him — and they’ll figure out a way to get him out of that contract.
Omsk region governor’s hockey advisor Anatoli Bardin told Sovestsky Sport, “We would like to see the Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Frantisek Kaberle and the Washington Capitals forward Michael Nylander in Avangard Omsk.”
As for the contract, he said, “Trust me, if we are working on it, that means there is a way [to get Nylander to come to Avangard]. We are still working on it.”
Previously, the Czech website Deniksport.cz reported that Nylander and Kaberle might jump ship to the Avangard Omsk this season. It was confirmed by Kaberle’s father.
“I heard this information, but it’s premature to talk about anything,” Kaberle’s father told Deniksport (via Japers Rink). “I know he wants to remain in the NHL. But, of course, you can’t discount anything from happening.”
Both Nylander and Kaberle are players that their respective GMs want to unload through trades this offseason. Nylander will cost the Caps $4.875 million and Kaberle has been dangled as trade bait — to no avail — for the entire season.
Nice! (But would a link have killed ’em?)
Btw, you’re an Insider, Natty? Is it remotely worth it?

Definitely, in my opinion. More so if you’re into following more than just one or two major sports. You also get a fairly well-produced magazine every couple weeks.
You get a free Insider account with a subscription to ESPN the Mag (or vice versa)?

doesn’t matter. you can’t have one without the other.

in fact they did include a link! as well as links to sovestsky sport and the google translation of deniksport.cz. like slate magazine or any worthwhile blog, espn insider articles are all very good about citing and linking primary sources. and for sports besides hockey, you’ll find loads of great statistics-based analysis. (recently i’ve noticed a few shared articles with “puck prospectus,” a service i didn’t know existed.)
my $0.02:
i think it was worth it when i originally signed up in college (~6 years ago). the price was about $10 a year for a ton of online content, and i didn’t have blogs like this one or TEB’s to keep me in the loop. the “rumor central” blogs, and even the extremely popular beat reporter blogs (like buster olney’s) are really just a collection of traditional media links that i can now find elsewhere for my favorite teams. plus, they’ve made most of their fantasy content free in order to draw in customers and compete with yahoo(!).
they let me go for about 3 years without turning off my account, so i received 4 years of service for my original $10. when they finally came to check up with me, though, i realized they were bundling the online service with the magazine. so now you pay $40 a year, and there’s no option to receive just the online content at a cheaper rate. i agree with cluster…pretty decent mag. but generally i don’t read magazines and this one isn’t an exception. i maybe flip through it every third issue.
my re-up these days is mostly due to my fantasy football, NFL draft and (don’t make fun of me) college football recruiting addictions/dorkdom. oh, and i think they now put up video of every PTI show (although the audio would be free to non-insiders, and it’s not like kornheiser’s face is adding any value).
EJ hradek’s and pierre lebrun’s insider-only blogs are pretty good, but basically represent the extent of their hockey coverage. right now hradek has posted nifty scouting reports on some of the top players in the finals, including both goalies, lidstrom, gonchar, sid, malkin. these amount to quotes from previous opponents about specific player tendencies.

a consideration: i shared my password with two or three college friends. the staff at the RInk could split an account on the cheap. i don’t think they police multiple sign-ins at all.

Here’s to a fellow fantasy football (everything, really) and college football dork.
I didn’t even remember what the annual cost was to be honest. But I’ll let it ride considering that, other than this site in the past year, ESPN.com consumes the majority of my non-work-related Internet time. I suppose there may be better sports sites out there, but 10 years of surfing a site regularly makes me pretty loyal.
I can’t believe you are gonna let ESPN get away with referencing you without the apostrophe, JP.
