Man, it looks like all the bear left of that moose was its coat.
I love the great outdoors, nature, etc.!

What other hockey game? The Stingrays series ended on a great note last night…
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

About 12 minutes to go in the second period. Walton is going bonkers saying this game is being called very one-sided. :) Mink has a PPG. 1-0 Bears.

Giroux just scored on the PP. 2-0 Bears!

I’m an out-of-town Caps/Bears/Stingrays fan, so I mostly rely on streaming radio and TV. :)

Laing pots a 4-on-6 empty net goal. 3-0 Bears and a 2-1 series lead. GO BEARS!

Guess everyone must have gone to the Hershey Bears game. A lot of fans who post on Capitals Insider were planning to go to the game and do a tailgate party.

Stupid Pens was about right.
The flightless fowl really came unraveled in the second period, bunch of asinine penalties. They started strong, then Detroit really took over excepting a couple of short stretches for the Staal line.
Getting 4 or 5 power plays and scoring on 3 of them sure didn’t hurt the Wing’s chances.
Datsyuk came back and looked amazing – he absolutely undressed Crosby on the goal line for a chance and was making plays all over the ice. I bet Babcock is glad he waited to play, 13 looked near 100% healthy and may have been the best player of the game.

The thing about the Pens is… they’re a good team, there a very good team, they didn’t wind up in the finals by accident… but if you can rattle them (not necessarily an easy thing to do), you can really rattle them. Last night was a perfect example.

Good night for hockey.
Bears shut out Moose 3-0, Wings shut out Pens 5-0, tailgate w/ lots of food and getting to meet cool people. What more can I ask for?

Hell of a lot of fun. Having gone to my first Hershey game, I found it odd to sit between two Pens fans, and next to a guy who just didn’t care about NHL hockey. The people were FAR more…what’s the word…willing to say politically incorrect things, but it didn’t bug me too much.
About the game:
Anyone who doesn’t think Neuwirth can play in the NHL now on a similar level to Varlamov needs to go watch him. Good lord. He had lots of help with really good D, especially on a 5-3 PP for about a minute.
Alzner did not appear NHL ready. He was coming back from injury, and made some plays, but he just…he didn’t look like the same guy we saw in his first batch of NHL games.
Carlson, on the other hand, looked like the cream of the crop. God Damn it, that kid needs to be in DC next year. He was muscling players off the puck, he could shoot, and he just made me smile.
Staffan Kronwall was everything Carlson was, and a little bit more. At Caps games, when certain d-men are in the ice, I cringe, knowing something might happen. I was worried at first with some guys, but Kronwall and Carlson did not give me that vibe. Easily, those guys looked the most NHL ready of the 6 I saw.
Of the forwards, I was so impressed by Pinizotto(Sp?). He was EVERYWHERE. If he had any finishing talent, he didn’t show it, but he was hitting everything, making all the smart moves, and just…wow.
Laing already had a fan in me, but that respect grew. His EN goal was nice, but he blocked a shot, textbook, and reminded me of what we had when he was here in DC. I would not object if he was a fourth line winger next year.
Mike Keane did not look strong for the Moose. He was slower than everyone.
Admittedly, one game does not make all of these guys NHLers. But they looked like a pro team against a farm team tonight. Despite the shots numbers, it did not look like the Bears were ever not in control. The Bears looked feistier, they fought harder, I thought, and the thing that really impressed me was their solid defense and (gasp) their beautiful dump and chase game. Dump and chase can be obnoxious, because often there is too much dump and not enough chase. But the Bears forwards were obviously faster than the Moose defensemen. They got into the corners and more often than not came out with the puck.
About the Tailgate: good lord, I had fun. Chucks, sparkly, jmu(holy hell what wonderful cookies), and Irockthered, and whoever else was there I’m forgetting, thanks for helping get that together, and rockthered, kudos for the work on that grill. Had to be hard as hell. Lots of fun tonight for me and my fiancee, who was worried it was going to be a massive sausage fest. I just wish more of us could have been there.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Very sorry I missed the tailgate and meeting all you Japer’s denizens — unexpected traffic. I had a blast at my first Bears game, though. The Giant Center is just adorable!

yeah, we didn’t get in until about 6:30, and then my quest for alcohol in between the 1st/2nd periods made me forget about that meeting… but what a fun time! 4/5 of my group is actually probably going to go back on tuesday for game 5! :) my friend and i both got jay beagle shirts because that’s the only one we could find in a small! haha.

I’m not sure if I’ll come Tuesday or not. I definitely will if the Bears win tonight. Otherwise, I don’t know.

They said on the radio there were only 500 left before the game ended yesterday. I’d say you’re out of luck by now.

I’ll give it a try when the box office opens this morning; we’ll see what happens.

That was me…I was in 211. That was my first trip to the Giant Center and I was very, very impressed with not only the team, but also the arena and general atmosphere. I’ll definitely be hitting up some more Bears games next season.

My crew and I were in the last row on the aisle with 5 matching Bears shirts (2 Beagles, Aucoin, Neuvy and Mink). Next time I’ll say hi!

Good thing too, because my quest for potables after all the screaming I did in the first made me forget too. :) Oh well, hopefully there’ll be another chance.

If not before this final is finished, maybe we should try again in September, for the rookie scrimmage or something like that. Not that I’m suggesting you have to organize it — at this point I’m just musing.

Not going to. I love you guys and I had a great time doing it, right up until I had to clean the grill.

I brought it up; I might have to. Fortunately, Ballston has several bars that could accomodate a crowd. :)

First time I’ve ever seen a guy on the bench grab and hold an opposing player who on the ice DURING PLAY, but it happened last night.
Somehow that’s a 2 minute roughing penalty???

What a great time yesterday! The tailgate was fun; it’s really too bad you can’t do that in front of Verizon Center. :-) Kudos to gotsparkly for organizing it.
This was my first AHL experience, made all the better by the 3-0 beatdown, even if none of the goals were scored at even strength. Last night, the Bears just looked so much the better team, except maybe during the 5 on 3. Kind of hard to look great under those circumstances. Saw the name Koharski as the referee, wondered if that meant anything. Yep, it did. Think lousy officiating belongs exclusively to the Caps? Think again.
The whole experience is just a little different. The place was loud, but there’s 7,500 fewer people there than at Verizon, so it felt like it was missing something. On the other hand, it’s not headache inducing, so that’s fine with me. The in-game entertainment is nearly non-existent, which actually is fine. It just takes getting used to. Also having the game start immediately at 7:00. That’s different.
At one point well into the third, Manitoba was doing a great job keeping the puck in. Bears finally iced the puck. My daughter was frustrated that no one chased after it, but I thought it was smart; why waste the energy when you know you’re probably not going to get there when you’re tired already, use the extra seconds to recover. I was also thinking here’s a good time to take the timeout, team’s up 2-0, you’re probably not going to need it later. But I watched them line up to take the draw. And then, they call the timeout. I thought that was totally genius coaching.
I still have a lot to learn about how I watch the game, so I certainly miss a lot of what goes on during the game. I always find myself watching offense more than defense, so I can’t comment on that. Also, as opposed to sitting up high at Verizon, we were sitting way down low by the goal where the Bears shoot twice.
I know that many have a soft spot for Chris Borque, and I found myself watching him more than anyone when he was on the ice. He’s a hell of a sparkplug, and damn if he doesn’t deserve to play in Washington.

Bourque and Kronwall were, in my eyes, the two best players on the ice last night not wearing goalie equipment. Bourque was cool and collected, and made my fiancee swoon when he played the majority of a shift helmetless.
Off topic, Management, will there be a game 4 thread?

Borque needs a haircut. I wonder if he’s like Backstrom — has one person he likes to cut his hair and waits until the end of the season when he can get there? Just a stupid observation.
There was a heck of a lot of red in the stands last night. That was really cool.

I forgot to mention the really cool T-shirt we wish we could have. The front says “It’s all about the cup” and has the Reese’s logo on it (oh, and the shirt is orange). The back has all the previous Hershey Calder Cup seasons listed out. We asked someone where they got it, and they said it was given out at the first playoff game. Very disappointed that it’s not for sale. Definitely one of the coolest handouts we’ve ever seen.

Game 4 just ended. Bears win 2-1, up 3-1 in the series! Boy, I wish I could be there Tuesday.
