"[Eric Fehr] had surgery on both of his shoulders two weeks ago -- the result of separate injuries he suffered during the regular season and playoffs -- and is expected to miss anywhere from three to six months.
"The team is hopeful that Fehr's recovery will be quick and that he'll be ready to get back on the ice before September. But there's no guarantee that will happen."

First a bad back and now 2 bad shoulders.
This does not bode well for him picking up the top line minutes with Kozlov’s departure.
does not bode well at all, and puts an even bigger “?” for that RW needed.
can’t believe its BOTH shoulders. @*^#!

A circling center with a bum shoulder is no picnic either, fwiw.

FYI, six months puts his return at mid-November.

My question now is how do you deal with him as an RFA? Gotta just qualify him on a one-year deal and hope he takes that, right? Can’t commit any longer to Glass Joe Fehr right now.

Peake’s downward spiral started a freak play (one — a shattered heel — that was compared to injuries that might be suffered from a parachutist). He did suffer from other injuries (concussion in a car accident, broken hand), but it was that first injury that really cost him his career, despite his dogged effort to overcome it.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Yep – the poster boy for no-touch icing is Peake.

I read an article on PP a couple of years ago, and he’s still bitter about that play. Can’t say I blame him.

…although shoulder injuries take a while to heal completely, and even then, after the return, sometimes there’s a loss of effectiveness (See Nylander, Michael)…
Let's go Caps!
Fehr is young. Young bodies heal better and sometimes after surgery and proper recovery a repaired part of ones body can be in even better shape than it was before an injury.
Just saying, all is not lost.
Maybe they’ll hook him up with a pair of bionic shoulders (or whatever happened to that kid in the crappy movie where he pitched for the Cubs) and he’ll come back with a 115 mph 40-foot wrister.

And then he went on to hump Tara Reid in the “American Pie” movies. The End.

And then this happened:

It all comes back to the Caps…

By the way, that’s a double surgery that you never recover from.

i don’t know. this seems like this is the real beginning of the end for Fehr, at least with the Capitals. too many factors will be working against him (conditioning/contracts-his and others/younger blood nipping at his heals/often injured-which is terrible for a “power forward”), especially with the clever scouting team the Caps have.

Related: surgery on both shoulders… how the hell do you, say, brush your teeth while recovering?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I can answer this. I fractured both wrists in an accident and had surgery to piece everything back together again. I couldn’t do anything for almost a month, including brush my teeth, feed myself, etc., but luckily, I have a wonderful family. Hopefully Eric’s just as fortunate. It took a couple of months of therapy before I could function with my hands again and I didn’t work for three months. (Saw several people at therapy with shoulder injuries as well as one who severed his fingers using a snow blower.) I still feel lucky my livelihood doesn’t demand anything more from my hands than writing and typing. Jokes aside, hopefully things work out well for Fehr because as others have said, this could be life-changing.
Speaking of 2003 draftees, didn’t Mike Richards just have surgery on both shoulders too? I wonder what the extent of the damage was and whether the Flyers are having second thoughts about his 12 year contract. He’s a player on a whole different level from Fehr at this point in their careers but it’s got to be scary either way.
The guy I saw was trying to shoo his dog away and accidentally stuck his hand…yuck. His fingers were re-attached but I couldn’t see how things were going to be right again. My hand surgeon got real busy if he was on-call after a snowstorm. It seems unfathomable but so does the frequency of injuries while cutting a bagel.
Yeah, I heard that the single most common reason to be in an ER on Sunday morning is people cutting their hand open while slicing bagels.
That’s what bagel cutters are for.
I am fortunate that only one of the injuries I have been to an ER for was actually me being stupid. (The other involved an attempted – and failed – jacking of my car.)

I may be wrong, but Eric Fehr played with a torn labrum in both shoulders. Doesn’t that make him a sort of mega-badass?
Technically, I think he played with only one bad shoulder. Sounds like the second one went with the hit into the boards by Pittsburgh, after which we never saw him again. No matter, it doesn’t change the sentiment. Then again, now you have to ask how much the first injury affected his play, and how early/late in the season did it happen?
Poor guy seems to be snakebitten, though. Finally gets healthy from the back problem, plays a partial season in ‘07-’08, you think ‘08-’09 is finally the breakthrough year and he ends up getting hurt badly enough to need surgery. Bummer.
i never had any stitches in my life and in one 3 month stretch I had my eye, my lip,my eye, my hand and my eye stitched up. All between March and July. Ridiculous.l

ok so that’s 5 months but who is counting?

Wow, I’m glad I finally got you the $10 I owed you. Sounds like you need it for the medical bills!
