Calgary starts off the day by trading Jordan Leopold and a 3rd rounder for Jay Bouwmeester’s rights.
Well, that means J-Bo plays in the Western Conference, which is sort of a plus for us.

And you assume that Calgary thinks there’s a pretty good chance of signing him. Otherwise, for four days of negotiating rights, that’s insane.
If they think they have a pretty good chance of signing him, it’s because they’ve talked to him. Which is illegal, but people do it anyway. In which case, they can wait until Wednesday.
If they haven’t talked to him, but they just gave up Leopold and a third for the chance that they might sign him between now and Wednesday, they’re crazy. That’s true whether they sign him or not.

I think they’ll have a great chance to sign him. He’s a Western boy, he wants to play in a hockey market for a winning team.
Leopold's a UFA
so it’s really a 3rd for four days—steep, but not insane, I think

International Scouting Services: “Orlov is a rushing defender with very good offensive skills. He loves to jump in from blue line to make plays. He has been a workhorse for the Russian national teams consistently playing every second shift for the Russian 91 group, and has been very effective. Orlov, who plays his off side has a strong shot and loves to jump into the zone from the weak side to become a potent scoring threat. He loves to rush the puck up ice and has very good inside out moves to get the puck and himself in deep into the offensive zone. Overall, a very hard-nosed player that everyone would love to have on his team.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Per NHL: “"Orlov is an extremely skilled offensive-minded defenseman with excellent hand eye coordination. He makes good, hard, tape-to-tape passes and his excellent stickhandling, supported by very efficient small dekes, gains him extra time and space. He isn’t overly physical, but he is noticeably strong."”

Still, you’re correct – he would have gone much higher if he weren’t Russian and there weren’t transfer issues. However, since we’re the (un)official Russian team in the States, that’s not really a concern for us.
I think many fans would be happier right now if the Caps had taken Orlov 24th and Johansson in the second round, even though the end result is the same.
Of course, none of us have our own scouting department…

Funny, we said the same thing re: Gustafsson and Carlson last year – happy to end up with both, but thought Carlson should’ve been the first pick.

And of course, the rational, economist analysis is “who cares? You got both of them anyway.”
Too bad we’re humans not robots.

Absolutely. No complaints here, it’s just funny how the organization seems to have a habit of doing that.
As long as they always keep that second pick (you know, the good one), then they’ll be fine.

The more I read about Johansson, the more I like the pick – especially compared to Gus last year. Johansson has been playing in the Elite League, on the best team in that league. He also played very well at the WJC. Gus did none of those things.
Agree with this. Sounds like a guy who got underscouted and flew in under the radar. Everyone knew he was good, nobody sent enough scouts up to see him (and it was hard, since he was playing 10 minutes a night in the SEL), so everyone put him in the “big blob” between 30 and 50.
Sounds like the Caps know something other teams don’t…

are you sure? Judging by the gushing affection expressed by many Penguins fans, I’m pretty sure he’s having relations with the whole city.
Yes, they were. I watched him and was reminded of Backstrom with a mean edge.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
I’m not sure he’s quite as slick as Backis with the puck (but who is?), but he looks good along the boards and he seems very willing to go to the net.
Like you said, who is? But he plays the same style of game from what I could see, and was willing to crash the net like you said. Like the rest of you, I was confused at first, the more I see, the more I like.
We’ll see how he turns out. He’s going to play another year in Sweden, right?

I kind of liked it, although I stole my friend’s keys about the middle of the round and we were both pretty happy by the time it finished.

It wouldn’t be a real draft without the Islanders taking some weird pick.
But then again, DiPietro gets hurt every other game.

Two 2nds, two 3rds, three 4ths, two 5ths and two 7ths. Wow.

Or Canadian players. But they are the Canadian media. Until a US network invests in its own production, that’s just they way it is and we’re stuck with it.
From Hockey News:
HT WT Team GP G A Pts PIM +/-
5-11 176 Swift Current (WHL) 54 24 24 48 42 18
Scouting Report: In his second year with the Broncos, he placed fifth on the club with 24 goals, and eighth in points with 48, in 54 games in 2008-09… has good speed and awareness, which helps him in defensive situations… works hard and is capable of providing his team with an energy spark from time to time… doesn’t have ideal NHL size for the center position… was rated 29th among North American skaters in Central Scouting’s final rankings

Good Draft for the Caps So Far
I’m a little bummed that we haven’t moved anyone (such as Morrissonn), but we got three good players, two at a position of need, and two guys who were slotted much higher than we drafted them at. I think Orlov will be the Caps’ “steal” of this draft.

So more of a Nylander-esque hopeful “bag of pucks” type trade. Got it.
by :hsughrofl: on Jun 27, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah he seems like more of a 3rd or 4th round value, but I couldn’t tell you because I don’t know that much about Lepisto.
If Lepisto were a baseball player, you’d call him a AAAA player – too good for the AHL, not good enough for the NHL. He’s never going to see much time with the Caps, so this wasn’t a terrible move. It would have been nice to get something slightly higher, but whatever.
Orlov is the new Lepisto, with perhaps more of a physical presence.

by ThePeerless on Jun 27, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Lepisto is a pretty good skater. His problem was holding his own physically in his own end. The stuff about Orlov says he’s pretty strong so I really hope he pans out better than Sami.
So he’s small and can’t skate? Doesn’t seem like anyone would want that package. How many undersized offensive defensemen can you think of that aren’t above average skaters? If he had Erskine footspeed he would have never made it out of Finland.
I think Lepisto is a great example of quick vs. fast. I think his first step is atrocious and it takes him time to get up to speed, but once he’s there, he’s a pretty decent skater.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I disagree. You’re not really trading the player, you’re trading his RFA rights. And if you’re Sami, don’t you think about going back to Europe….
With a player as young as Lepisto, you’re essentially trading the player. Despite his RFA status, he’s got no bargaining position – like you said, his only option is going back to Europe.
The thing is that Lepisto was an established player in Europe before he came over. If he can’t crack the NHL roster next season, he’s perfectly willing in going back, and with the Caps and their depth in defensemen, he ain’t cracking the roster anytime soon. The time to trade Lepisto was the March trade deadline as a package sweetner, but unfortunately, he was injured at the time and supposedly out for the season.
I knew it was unlikely that he’d ever be more than an occasional injury callup on this team, but I was still hoping to get more than a 5th. He could, on a bad team, be a regular NHLer.

Phoenix actually has quite a deep defensive corps. He probably won’t crack their lineup barring injury.
Wonder if he likes Ontario

In the 7th Round
Please select Anton Burdasov…I know he is a risk, but very good talent and probably a 2nd or 3rd rounder if not from Russia.

Anyone have GMGM’s cell number so I can call him to take Burdasov.
by CapsFanSince1979 on Jun 27, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Anton Burdasov, RW
6’3, 202
May 9th, 1991
Chelyabinsk, Russia
This big scorer can be another interesting player for the North American scouts as he has already an NHL body paired with some good skills. Burdasov has a good scoring touch. He keeps on getting very good statistics with the ’91’s, but despite of this Andrei Nazarov – one of the few KHL coaches that are giving room to the youngsters in this season – is yet to dress him with the main team. This might hurt his stock even if he’s going to represent Russia in the Under-18’s. He would have been called a hot prospect if not for the current tensions between Russian and North American hockey systems and if he was getting pro hockey ice time back at home.

I just read the Cody Eakin “What they’re saying about…” and my first reaction is “this is a kid who’s going to fall into Mike Green’s orbit quickly.”
Just finished moving from Richmond back home. Glad we took a Russian because it means my blogs’ name is still relevant. With so many Swedes, I was fearing a change.

Per Corey: Caps 7th pick is Benjamin Casavant, a LW from PEI who had 39 goals and 80 points this past season.
With that size I’d be willing to bet the knock is his skating or injury history. He played in the Q so those point totals aren’t that incredible but I’m still surprised he was a 7th round pick.
After being nonplussed (but pulling out of it) by yesterday, I think George recovered to do a pretty solid job today. I hate to put the onus of a draft’s success on one guy, but Orlov had better be everything Craig Button seems to think he is.
I still want to know what kind of shenanigans GMGM/Chiarelli and then Julien/Boudreau discussed yesterday.
from the house that Red Jesus built
GMGM fairly gushed about him on the video on the team’s website. That surprised me. You don’t hear GMGM do much gushing.
That’s what I read as well, but why do you need the coaches swapping data on the heels of the GM-level convo….just something to look at going forward. By not making a stab at 2C this weekend and (imo) an unfavorable UFA market this summer, I am beginning to believe the expiring contract concept DMG and others have batted about for a top flight guy might be the very best way to go to fill this. Savard could well be a target and the coaches were talking personnel qualitative data. And I am totally speculating.
from the house that Red Jesus built
I’m with your speculation. It doesn’t make sense to swap picks with the team drafting right next to you at that point in the round, especially that early in the draft. When they were talking they had no idea who was going to be available so a swap wasn’t really helpful to either team. In the video on the Caps’ site GMGM said they were talking about offers they both received from other teams to move back in the draft. There’s more going on than he’s letting on.
I was kind of thinking the same thing when I read it. Corey Masisak from TWT twittered it, and I was thinking that there just HAD to be something more talked about than trading for a spot down. If they were talking Savard, when do you think a deal would be done by and who/what would it cost us?
And off topic, but we should learn how to say Dmitri Orlov’s surname in case he becomes a superstar come playoffs because of lack luster performance by someone on the blueline. (I keed, I keed!)
Well, Boston has to be looking to shed salary … I’m not a real good judge of worth yet or what a fair trade is, but I have to think that a deal for Savard involves Chris Bourque.

Maybe Boudreau and Julien were just bored by that god awful long first round and were discussing their favorite brand of golf clubs. I don’t think we can really read too much into it.
Hi by the way, long time reader, first time poster.
Remember also McPhee’s infamous quote from the 2006 draft: “Well, we have to make it look like we’re doing something over here.” Who’s to say that the two of them weren’t looking busy just to make other teams nervous?
