Ovechkin Nominated For Two ESPYs

Press release:

"ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin has been nominated for two ESPY Awards – Best Play [below] and Best NHL Player – with the winners determined by fan voting that is open now at ESPYS.tv. Voting continues in 37 categories through 11:59 p.m. ET on July 11.

These are the fourth and fifth ESPY nominations of Ovechkin’s career, as the two-time NHL MVP hopes to win for the first time at The 2009 ESPYs when the show is televised Sunday, July 19, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN HD. A one-hour nomination special will be broadcast tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Ovechkin is the only hockey player and one of a select group of athletes nominated for two ESPYs."

Also nominated twice are . . .  some other people . . .

You are aware that we are talking about internet voting, right?

Oh, then never mind. Hasn’t got a chance in hell.

remember how the voting turned out last year? Ugh.

Just for yucks, I went and voted. Discovered that I had been already registered at some point. I guess I tried a couple of years ago and gave up. A problem is that you have to vote in every friggin’ category. I don’t know anything about a bunch of them, but had to make a vote. So there’s your major problem right there, because you have to assume that most of the voters are guessing at many of the categories. Not to mention that if there’s anything that pits hockey against other sports, it’s going to lose. Sorry, Alex.

Also, the above video is not the nominated play, it’s the one against the Rangers in game 5. Idiots.

the dipsy doodle goal? That wasn’t even his second best goal of the year! The poke check belly slide against Buffalo was better.

How does this get nominated and not Varlamov’s save on Crosby? Maybe Kipper’s save from out west is, but I have never seen a save quite like Varl’s on Crosby.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

still can’t believe AO wasn’t nominated for “best play” ESPY the year of the coyotes goal.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
