It’s not as if tall basketball players haven’t been picked up by hockey teams before. Manute Bol was signed to a CHL contract at one point. http://espn.go.com/minorlh/news/2002/1112/1460103.html
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Nice.
Just for the fact that it’s a Quebec beer and red, I might offer Maudite.

For my $, the best IPAs in the USA right now are Lagunitas, Anderson Valley, Avery, Victory and Bear Republic.
Stone and Dogfish Head, along with Lagunitas, are my three favorites. Southern Tier makes a pretty tasty IPA, as well.
Plus, you get to read the stuff on the side of the Stone bottles, which is always good for a chuckle, at least when you’re buzzed.

yay dogfish head! :)
(i work at the restaurant, haha)
they taught me to actually kind of like beer there… and that’s quite a feat for me.
Dogfish (barring Brickskellar) is my favorite bar, because it’s actually a bar. I don’t have to scream to be heard, the beer is excellent and I can get to know the bartenders.
I just turned 24 and I’m already a grouchy old man.

small recap
First – the obvious – massive boos for “Gerry Bettman” as he was displayed on the big screen, toronto, and boston.
it seemed to me that the centre bell has great atmosphere… i’d like to see a game here.
as phoenix was on the clock… bettman announces ":next on the clock … PHOEN IX…. coyotes
…then starts the chants HAM – IL – TON …. HAM – IL – TON!!!
it was at this point we realized that this draft was going to take 6 hours and began to wander. we did move down to the second row… where during the caps pic, we made a small amount of noise and were noticed and thanked by GMGM and BB. Some guy I don’t know came over from the table and gave us a draft day hat. so that was pretty cool.
it was the after hours that made the night… that might be a different thread.
Any draft night drinking games to share? Certainly any mention of reaching should require a reach for your beverage . . .
Any time anyone talks about Brian Burke trying to trade up.
Oh, no, wait, we’d all be dead before the first selection was actually made.

Bonjour from Montreal, Caps fans. I just arrived a little while ago and went straight into a Professional Hockey Writers’ Association meeting at the media hotel. So I’m playing catch up at the moment.
Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick note letting everyone know that I’ll be at Bell Centre tonight and will be blogging all the Caps’ news that goes down, live from draft floor. I hope to be up and running around 6 or so, soon after a quick chat with Bruce Boudreau.

Luongo
Here’s a question: Why are the ‘Nucks doing the Luongo extension now? He’s got a year left. What’s the urgency?!
(In a related story: VAN has apparently decided that Cory Schneider is not the future. And in one fell-swoop they’ve destroyed much of his value as an asset.)
Because he couldn’t beat Hershey? Wow. Didn’t I keep hearing he won best goalie in the AHL this year?
I didn’t think he showed much all year, except a lot of .ca-centric chatter. Take a look at his NHL stats.
Yes, he did, though AHL accolades don’t say much about NHL success.

Any of you guys following the Pronger to the Caps discussion on Twitter?
Rockin' the Red in Section 412
If the Caps can move 26/4/23 and the No. 55 it’s a good deal.
The guy who defended a bizarre idea by saying that the Caps could trade Carlson/etc. if they wanted to get the deal done is… not helpful. I mean, the Caps could trade AO if they wanted to get the deal done, fer chrissakes.
Do you think that Pronger would actually go for that? Would that be enough, and can we fit him under the cap?
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
Quote of the day so far, from NHL on the Fly — “Matt Duschene would probably be a #1 pick if it weren’t for Tavares and Hedman”
How embarrassing is it for the NHL that this low-rent production is on NHL NETWORK (!!!!) 45 minutes before the draft.
Talking heads. Some are better than others. Then there are the ones on NHL On The Fly. //snark
Even when I eagerly watch that piece of crap (i.e., after a Caps win), I gag.
One hour of TV time + JP + DMG/Pepper/me + a 12-pack of Victory Hop Devil = Better TV than ANY studio show on NHL Network.
that is a bold statement, sir. Exactly how many of those Avery’s have you had? : )
from the house that Red Jesus built
I have inside information that the NYI are going to select Duschene first to try to enrage their fans to the point that they burn down the Colliseum. Then the Town of Hempstead will be forced to build a new arena. Garth Snow is brilliant.

From the TSN bog. Take it for what it’s worth.
Agent Pat Brisson, who represents John Tavares and Matt Duchene, told Ryan Rishaug today that he does not know what the Islanders intend to do with the top pick. Brisson said he usually knows by now, adding that Garth Snow’s cone of silence act is something he’s never experienced in 20 years at the draft.

from the house that Red Jesus built
I wonder if they’d be willing to trade Jeff Carter. That’d be crazy, but so’s the deal they just made.
by Gould Old Days on Jun 26, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Ultimately the Flyers will give up Sbisa, Lupul *and another player* for Pronger. They’re $6M over. So that means that they’ll have to move another body to make room for him. The deal for ANA is only part of the REAL deal.
A significant player, too, if it’s a 6 million cap hit. More likely two players, I would think.
by Knee high to a duck on Jun 26, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope. They’ll be salary-dumping, trading salary for a fifth or something. Welcome to the capped NHL, eh?
Right, but to dump 6 million in salary, it’s going to take one of their best players under contract or two other ones, if I understand that point you’re making.
by Knee high to a duck on Jun 26, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions
The dream would be Briere. I don’t know how much they really need to shed on top of this. They got rid of 4.25 with Lupul and they don’t have much more to sign.
Yup but that will cost less than a mill and so will the 7th D if they don’t just pull guys from the AHL to fill it.
Yeah I’m not endorsing the position they put themselves in, I just don’t think they need any more major moves to make this fit under the cap.
According to NHLNumbers, even after Sbisa and Lupul: PHL is over. The Cap Geek numbers don’t include bonus cushion, right?
Bonuses are included in cap hit but not in salary (so they say).
by Bald Pollack on Jun 26, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think anyone is going to take Briere with a long-term expensive contract and his injury history, given the cap is going to be falling soon.
They have a lot of scoring forwards, of whom I presume (although I don’t know for sure) that only Richards and Carter are untouchable among them. I have to figure they could move one or two for a goalie and a pick, or something.

It makes me wonder about the owner of the Thrashers. They’re most definitely the real stupidity behind that operation.
The ownership of ATL is part of the problem. It is a group of ~ 8 people currently locked in a lawsuit between themselves. It really is not stupidity but an inability to do much of anything because of the lawsuit.

What do you mean rightfully so? LAK had the pick and used it. If Burke really wanted him then pay up and move up. I don’t see where his sense of entitlement comes from (it existed before he went to TOR).

I’m just talking in terms of DC at this point in the convo. The Pronger deal was pretty interesting just because I’m not sure why they gave up so much for a guy who has one year left on his contract.

I really want a big shutdown defenseman to get Crosby out of the crease!
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
First, unless you get Hedman you aren’t getting that guy in this draft. Second, Mo and the 24 is not enough to move up to take a top 10 pick, especially if the guy is good enough to come in and keep Crosby out of the crease already. You’re just going to have to be patient and wait on Alzner and Carlson like the rest of us.
No, I realize that Mo and 24 is not enough to move up to that position, but I can dream.
I am not sure that Alzner will be that physical d-man that I want; Carlson, maybe. I am with you, though, about patience (see my previous comments about Sarge).
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know what you mean by physical but the guy that did the best against Crosby all post-season was Lidstrom. He’s not the most “physical” guy on his own team but being solid on your feet and smart enough to always be in position goes a long way.
No doubt that I agree with you that (hopefully) Alzner is a positional type defenseman in the mold of Lidstrom. And I also agree that there is great value in that type defenseman.
My only point is that I would also like a big d-man with a mean streak (think Stevens and Pronger) that will physically challenge Crosby/Hartnell/others when they get near the net. I think Cowen could be that guy in a few years.
No need to argue the effectiveness of one vs. the other. I would like both types of d-men on the Caps.
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Are you comparing Erskine and Juice to Stevens and Pronger?
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Are you comparing Erskine and Juice to Stevens and Pronger?
That was sarcasm.
My only point is that Crosby did too much in front of the Caps’ net during the playoffs, and I think Cowen is the type of player that will prevent players from having so much freedom in front of the net.
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Did Philly just give up the farm to bring in Pronger for “positional play?”
by Direction 87 on Jun 26, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
It doesn’t matter why they did it, they still gave up a ton. And while everyone talks about Pronger’s physicality (because he’s dirty) it’s only his positional play that allows him to play like that. He is where the puck is going first and when you get there you get mauled. Lidstrom and Timmonen just get there and move the puck before you can do anything. It’s just a different style but the positional play is the key.
Pronger is going to spend a lot of time making sure Crosby pays the price for hanging out around the crease (something we didnt do during the playoffs)…if that’s “positional” play, so be it.
by Direction 87 on Jun 26, 2009 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Line of the night from Bryan Murray there, on the Heatley situation
“Are you going to have to reduce your expectations?”
“No, we’re probably going to have Danny Heatley play left wing for our hockey team if nothing works out.”
Agreed. And the right approach, especially because DanyBoy is douchily asking for a deal… but only to certain teams.

I love how McGuire was gushing about how “smart” their decision was. . . right before they picked de Haan.
Maybe the Isles guy got picked, and Snow got nervous about it happening again, so he moved up just to be sure. One layup, and then… How many picks do they have left, now? Are they in the minus yet?

Tarik just posted:
Anyway, I wanted to catch everyone up on what I’ve observed at the Caps’ table. GM George McPhee has been on the phone. A lot. What I found more interesting, though, was his 10-minute long conversation with Boston GM Peter Chiarelli. That conversation was followed by Coach Bruce Boudreau talking to his Bruins’ counterpart, Claude Julien, for about 10 minutes.
Of course, the Caps’ and Bruins’ tables are right next to each other. But they were saying more than just, “Hello.”
Either way, it is a little odd that two of the top three EC teams are talking trade

It’ll be Ashton or Ferraro, unless Vancouver does something strange.

Carter Ashton (who I want for the Caps as #1 on my list – now the others are gone)

So, WSH is 2 away...
I’m feeling trade down a few spots. If GMGM can, I bet he will. I think there may be 10 guys the Caps probably like here and that they can move down and get two of them….
Caps are going to take either Ferraro or Ashton

Then don’t say ‘they are’ say you think they are. Otherwise we think you’ve read something somewhere that might be int’g to the rest of us.
I didn’t think that at all. I’m guessing most other people didn’t either.

From ISS
International Scouting Services: Playmaking forward with great game sense and vision with the puck. Johansson has been an effective and consistent offensive threat for Sweden at both the U18 and U20 levels for the past couple of seasons. A shifty and technically skilled skater, Johansson has great hands and an excellent touch on the puck. Another young Swede with men’s league experience, he proved that he can be an effective point producer at the next level already, putting up 10 points in 45 games for Farjestad in the Swedish Elite League.
Has a shot he should use more often.
Sound like any other Swedes that we know?

Why do you say that? He played with men for the last year, Schroeder did not. I’m sure he’s pretty strong.
Flash played with men last year

He also had pneumonia, in case you missed that little tidbit.

Yes, but the pneumonia hit him in the middle of the season, not at the start. Flash’s strength has always been lacking

I really hope they know what they’re doing here, because this guy is pretty far off the board. I hope this isn’t another Gustafsson situation.
Might even be a statement about Gustafsson’s progress, who knows.
by Bald Pollack on Jun 26, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
The good thing about Johansson is that he’s playing in the Elite League, not in the junior league like Gus.
I still don’t mind Gus. Really. He may be developing better than we thought. If they wanted a center to step in right away, they wouldn’t have taken this kid.

Given that center is the Caps’ greatest need, do you believe that they followed your mantra?
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes. Their pick is two years away at a bare minimum and they’re not drafting a player for 2012 based on their 2009 needs.
Pretty much any pick they made is 3 years away. It would not be a stretch to think that their need in 2012 will be center. You have to think that they will be strong at G and D.
I do not disagree with you, I just think it is valid to ask if they are drafting for need.
by Moonage Daydream on Jun 26, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions
No doubt they could have a need at center in 2012 but Gus and Perreault could pan out and Steckel and Gordon could still be here – it’s awfully had to know. I just think with the depth the Caps have and where they’re picking they’re picking based on who they think is best overall

Actually, I’m fine with not getting “grit” in the first round. I would have liked someone with size and skill, but if that wasn’t available, or the guy wasn’t skilled enough, I’d rather have the better player. Grit is always available in the lower rounds.
I think most had him in the very late 20s, or early 30s. I don’t trust TSN’s ratings either – I think they take way too much away from European players. From the looks of it, the NHL GMs don’t trust them either.

Huh. I’d love it if they stayed on the reservation just a little bit. Why not trade down, take an extra pick and THEN pin the tail on the donkey?
No promises that he’s going to be available. I’m sure GMGM talked to a ton of guys before deciding to go with this pick.

I kind of hope not. 2-6 are for defensemen, in my book, and any forward who dips below 7 always throws me for a freaking loop. 7 is almost too low, too.

I don’t know how long Japers’ has been around, but I’d be curious to see what was said of Mike Green when he was picked.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
We noticed that a few of the defensemen picked were compared to Green in their style of play. I said that Green didn’t play like Green when he was drafted, so that tells you absolutely nothing.
If you read ESPN at the time, not all that much:
The Caps are another club that started to rebuild on the ruins of last season’s salary dump. GM George McPhee didn’t outsmart himself with the first overall pick, going the no-brainer route with Russian phenom Alexander Ovechkin. With basically one veteran defender left standing in Brendan Witt, McPhee got a gem at No. 27 in Jeff Schultz of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. Some eyebrows shot up when the Caps took Ray Bourque’s pint-sized son, Chris, three picks into the second round. But the Caps had enough picks to take a risk. And a 5-foot-7 dynamo can come in handy, as Tampa Bay Lightning winger Martin St. Louis just proved winning the Hart Trophy and the Stanley Cup.
