"According to three reports out of Russia this morning, Sergei Fedorov's NHL career is officially over. The 39-year-old ended more than a month of speculation about his future and has reportedly signed a two-year deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL."

$3.8M/year Fair enough, Caps were/SHOULD not pay that much. Thanks for your time here Feds.
And thanks again for this goal.

Wow! = two years at $3.8 million per
No hesitation there, Gramps! Good luck! Bongos and I will miss you. Thank you for all the kind words about the Caps and about DC. They meant mountains to me.
I’m gonna miss him, but no way the Caps should have matched that offer. Best of luck Feds. Thanks for the memories.

Yeah. It’s a given that he’s getting about twice what he’d get here, and when you factor in the taxes, at least triple. Still, after so many years and so much money earned, you’d think money wouldn’t be the sole motivator, but I guess you’d be wrong. Too bad, but in the long run, probably better for the team.
We need replacement Russians stat! :-)
it's not just money
his brother and not having played in russia since he defected are also big reasons. and the strain and physicality will be less on his 39 year-old body.
I hope I didn’t sound too cold haha. That game 7 goal against the Rangers ranks as one of my top 3 memories of any caps game I’ve been to.
Maybe we’ll see him back in Washington in the future in some kind of a front office position? Assistant coach?

That’d be pretty sweet to bring him back as a coach or something, don’t you think? Defensive Forward coach?

Oh, this really makes me sad
I know it’s probably the most logical decision, for him as well as for the team, but I really hoped he had one more Caps season in him.
I’m more grateful than ever that I was at the Rangers game 7. sigh
Alright, so do we leave the Cap space alone and let Nyls/Bourque/Aucoin/Perrault take his place, or do we take a serious look at one Patrick Marleau (through trade) or Eric Cole? Or someone?
by DrinkingPartner on Jun 25, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions
I would think the Capitals would want to shy away from most free agents with Backstrom and Semin having their contracts up after next season. If I were McPhee I would inquire about Marleau because his one year deal seems to suit the team’s needs.
And let’s not forget the reports that Boston is reportedly looking to deal Savard who has one year remaining on his contract. I’d much rather have him on that second line than Marleau. I wonder if if they’d be interested in a package that included Bourque.
Great call, b.orr4, I’d forgotten about Krejci’s extension. I agree with you: give me Savard over Marleau any day (especially at their respective salaries).
Savard or Marleau? Definitely love those names, espcecially since Marleau was voted by over 50% of NHL players as the most underrated player in the league.
With Brash, Feds and Kozlov gone that gives McPhee an extra $7.5 million in cap space. I’ve just got a real strong feeling something big is going to happen in terms of finding a top flight player with a year left on his contract, i.e. Pronger, Savard, Marleau, etc. With the Pens winning the Cup, you’ve got to believe that Ted has issued marching orders to McPhee to do whatever it takes to get a Cup next year.
Except that 7.5 becomes 5 when you factor in that Pothier won’t be on LTIR (and neither will Clark). And then that 5 becomes ~3 when you figure the cap will probably be dropping (we’ll know for sure pretty soon of course).
Unless Nyls actually does leave somehow, big splashes really can’t be made. At best you could see a moderate upgrade over someone like Clark or Pothier if you can ship them out, but probably nobody as big as Savard or Marleau.
I agree that you need to consider the changes to the team’s salary structure outside of the guys leaving: Pothier and guys getting raises, mostly.
I went over to capgeek.com and did what I thought the roster might look like and this is what I got:
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (including bonuses)
ROSTER SIZE 22 (13 forwards, 7 defensemen, 2 goalies)
SALARY CAP $56,700,000
PAYROLL $53,230,126
BONUS MONEY (ESTIMATED) (4.5% of cap) $2,537,500
CAP ROOM $3,469,874
CAP ROOM PER OPEN SPOT $3,469,874
I was playing it safe with the RFAs, so there could be more like 3.8 million free, but McPhee’s going to have to move some pieces if he wants to pick up anyone big. I also don’t think he wants to limit his options at the trade deadline next year like he did this year.
Savard at 5 million could be managable…
later tonight when I have time I might try and play with the numbers if nobody beats me to it.

It’d certainly be feasible, most simply by moving Pothier (assuming someone wants him), but I don’t know if McPhee will be able to make the stars align just right and get able to pull it off. Although I wouldn’t doubt him either…
What about moving Morrisonn? I really don’t see him in a Caps uniform next year.

Right, but his cap hit’d be off the books too. I’d rather move ShaMo than Pothier, by a landslide.
Varlamov for Johnny is almost an even trade according to nhlnumbers.com, so no worries there. Of course, Alzner eats a lot of that, assuming he comes up … Quick back-of-the-envelope (numbers from nhlnumbers.com) – Feds (4) + Brash (1.2) + ShaMo (1.9) = 7.1; minus Alzner (1.7) gives you 5.4. I don’t count Kozlov because Pothier’s cap hit replaces his.
I could go with Marc Savard, I really could, and while I grant that this is serious back-of-the-envelope stuff here … why not?

Right, but Erskine’s extension kicks in and Jurcina, Gordon, Fehr, and Schultz are all RFAs who will get raises, plus Fedorov, Kozlov, and Brashear open up roster spots that need to be filled. Going year-to-year with additions and subtractions assumes the rest of the team’s salary structure is the same, which it won’t be.
The calculator at capgeek.com is pretty magical and gives a great idea what would happen for any sort of ’if’s’ you might want to throw in.
Cool, thanks. (Although I did just account for Feds, Kozlov, and Brash if you read what I wrote?)

It really makes more sense to go to capgeek.com or nhlnumbers.com and add things up than to try and do some overwrought accounting. “Okay Alzner’s up, Mo’s gone, Brash is out, Feds is in Russia, that tallies to….” is a heck of a lot harder than typing a web address in.
Yeah, but speculating is sooo much more fun. Now, if we can just get Nylander to yearn to play with Feds, we could really go crazy.

No kidding. All hell would break loose although, for the record, I think a guy with a one year deal like Savard or Marleau would still be the best option.
I would love the Savard option, but it’s going to take some work to make it fit, not to mention Boston being willing to deal with a team they’d expect to meet in the playoffs. I know the All-Star game isn’t real game conditions, but Savard to Ovechkin was mighty pretty, and we already know that Backstrom to Semin works, too.
Although Marleau has been the playoff bust type, has he not, captaining the Sharks to…nowhere noteworthy?
by red army line on Jun 25, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s mostly a myth. Yeah, the Sharks haven’t won a Cup yet but Marleau has been a pretty good playoff performer during his career. It’s the other top flight C on the Sharks that I’m not sold on as a post-season performer.
No, he looks like a decent option, especially at 2.8 million. But I also don’t think the Canes would be willing to deal him to the Caps.
nice call
No way the Rags let him go, but I’d love to see how that would work on our top unit.

Take Nylander with you.
This is a sad day for me. Feds was one of the all-time best, and it was a joy watching him wear a Caps Jersey.
If Feds can take Nyls with him, Feds deserves to have his number retired here.

Good for Feds. Emotionally, he now gets to close the circle. His defection will be completely forgotten and he ends his career in front of friends and family. I’ll miss him. His goals against Florida and the Rangers will never be forgotten. He was grace personified on the ice but it’s another $4million in cap space and if that money gets us a player at the deadline that helps win a Cup, it’ll be worth it.
I love Fedorov, always have, but his time with Washington was done. I’m very pleased that the players got the chance to learn from him. That was worth the one year and price tag. I won’t be surprised to hear the players say that. Its hard to turn down 3.8 million (tax free?) a year for 2 years at 40 years old. Where Fedorov’s mentorship was invaluable, he doesn’t produce enough to warrant such a high price tag, with the team up against the Cap like they are. Had he put up 20 goals and 40 assists, I would have said ‘bring him back’. Still, I’m glad that he was here. He’ll always be one of my favorites.
I just wonder if we’ll all go back to misspelling his name :-).

I almost got a Feds jersey this past off season. I decided not to because it seemed like a waste to only be able to wear it to games for one season.
I’m sure the team will miss him quite a bit. I really have a crush on the 08-09 roster. I hope the 09-10 roster can put me in a similar love affair.
haha I know what you mean but I personally see nothing wrong with rockin a jersey of a player no longer with the team. Especially a legend like Fedorov.

My whole life I rocked a blank jersey because I was always more a fan of the team than any individual player. So getting someone’s name on my back (besides my own) is sort of a big deal. The honor I gave Brooks Laich by selecting him is not one to be taken lightly.
the blank jersey always seemed so naked to me. i like what you’re getting at, just talking aesthetically.
Mine would usually be signed by the whole team so it looked a bit less naked, but yeah I know what you mean =]
in 9th grade I was torn between a Dale Hunter and a Peter Bondra jersey. I ended up going with my name on a jersey (jersey foul, I know) because I was too afraid I would curse one of my favorite players. I wish to god I had gone with Hunter. I picked up an eagle Bonda off ebay for $15 a couple summers ago.

That’s a great deal on a bondra. I was this close to getting a Kolzig or a Bondra quite a few times. Bondra got us so many free pizzas back in the day.
My jersey has my name on it and I still defend the practice to anyone who says it’s a jersey foul. That’s Wysh’s worst contribution to the internet (including self jerseys as fouls, not the overall concept of his recurring feature, which is most often a whole lot of awesome).

Deal figures
There’s some incertainty in Russian media regarding the exact numbers of the deal. Gazeta.ru says it “is going to be not less than what Fedorov was making in Washington last season, about $2M.”(???) Mosnews.com reports on $3.8M per season citing sport-express.ru as the main source of information. However, sport-express.ru says the financial terms of the contract will probably be revealed only during the season and gives an estimate of $3M/year. Finally, sovsport.ru publishes an interview with the Metallurg general manager Velichkin who, answering a direct question on $3.8M/year, says: “I leave this rumor without comments. Sergei got a good contract without lofty numbers.”
91 will always be money
I had hoped to get a discount for another year, but this is no shocker…the man should be paid.
None of the (price pointed) UFA C’s are that exciting for us at 2C. With Fed’s departure announced now, I have a hunch this problem at Center is going to be addressed at this weekend’s draft, not with a pick, but a package…a surprising package.

So sad. I loved watching him skate. If I were rich, I’d pay the man $4 million a year just to skate around my own personal rink.
The real shame in all of this, of course, is that now there is absolutely no chance that Fedorov will provide us some entertainment by meeting the trashy blonds from “Real World” at Russia House.
by RedBirdie on Jun 25, 2009 1:04 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
No one has quite as much class as Fedorov. He also worked with many players, including Backstrom in the dots, Laich, Jurcina, not just the Russian kids. He leaves a void that can’t be filled with packages or drafts or anything like that. He’s the last of the 5, for crying out loud. It’s the end of an era. Most people don’t remember. It’s sad. Well, I shan’t think about this anymore, I’m becoming quite silly and tearful. Sure and it’s unattractive. Must trust in the management, and look ahead to better days.
I forgot Slava Kozlov, actually. I suppose he’ll play next season? He’d be the last. He was the youngest, and as I recall they considered him somewhat lazy and undisciplined. Fetisov rode rough-shod over him. I’ll never forget the looks and the hand gestures, as if he were saying, “What are you waiting for, an engraved invitation?” Yet they all played so beautifully, seamlessly, their opponents just stood around watching. Well, looking on the bright side (for there must always be one), Mr. Fedorov will not have to play so many games in a season and the big ice will be better suited to his slower rate of speed now. He can still play. That’s fine for him. For us, it remains to be seen. I don’t know of an available player that I would take in his place. None of the possible deals described above have any appeal for me. Someone mentioned GMGM likes to surprise us — I hope it’s a good one. I need it now like a slug of gin.
Nobody could replace his off-ice contributions. Almost anybody could replace his on-ice contributions. Such was the dilemma when figuring whether to bid to retain him, I suppose.
How would someone like Joe Sakic compare?

Slug of gin???? Please, in honor of Comrade Fedorov returning to the Glorious Motherland, take a shot of vodka!

Your're better off with Fedorov
When I used to play Sega hockey, this guy was the man. All good things come to an end and he bowed out gracefully.
If someone wants to pay him that much, good for him. He knows that his skills are no longer needed and the only reason he was hear was to mentor #8. It’s time for OV to take control and lead the team on his own.
Fedorov will be first ballot HOF and we can say good bye to him then. It’s a business, thanks and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

The Lightning not only hold the No. 2 pick in the draft behind the New York Islanders, but they’re also reportedly looking to shop Lecavalier, with the star centre’s home town of Montreal as a likely destination.
what a day. We lost Farrah Fawcett. We lost Micheal Jackson. We lost Segei Fedorov (to KHL). I know which one I’m must upset about.

RedBirdie, you are a true Fedorov fan. I salute you. On this sad day I am signing off for some time, having been coerced into the penal servitude that is the dreaded Family Vacation. I offer my apologies to anyone I might have offended in the last few months. Prior to that, it’s bad for your health to carry a grudge that long! I hope everyone has a lovely draft, and all your trade wishes come true. I hope He of the Almost 500 Goals finds happiness in a non-NHL environment. Life is rotten sometimes. Especially when your heroes go off on missions of their own and your family relentlessly criticizes the way you packed the car. It really sucks right now, to be me. Farewell, all!
ouch, Family Vacation. Be safe, and try and keep your sanity! Of course, family vacation seems to be cruel and unusual punishment given the current distressed state you find yourself in.

Flying Cloud, I know what you mean about dreaded family vacations. I recall my worst family vacation where my sister drove my mom’s car into a ditch and I was blamed for it since I was tired of lending her my keys (since she had given hers to the air conditioning repair man so he could fix our AC while we were on vacation). And the weather was too cold for the beach all that week.
Not so fast. Tarik said the deal isn’t completley done yet.
I was just putting the finishing touches on my story for tomorrow’s paper when I got a phone call from a team official, who informed me that the Caps were just told that the Sergei-Fedorov-to-Russia deal is only “90-percent done.”
90 percent?
Don’t toy with us now! This is serious — RedBirdie and I are practically prostrate! Someone get on the Red phone to GMGM and someone else for the love of mike find the chequebook. Don’t think for a moment anyone can replace this man. Every player named above is dust compared to the Legend. Just ask Ovie. He made it clear at the awards ceremony how he felt when he indicated — right there on stage no less — that he wanted Fedorov to return. All right then, I will back out of the effing driveway with a clenched jaw and trust in the power of GMGM to make the world right again without any assistance of mine. If he pulls this off, I will kiss the hem of his robes. Adieux!
That last 10%
I’ve been holding out hope for weeks, and I finally accepted the sad truth today. Don’t make me get my hopes up again!

Maybe it’s only a 90% chance that Fedorov’s a goner. Still, that is substantially more than 50%.
We loved you, Fed. Unfortunately, the price was no longer right — too expensive for a center near the end of his career. Ovi, Semin, and the other kids benefited from his presence for the 1.5 years he was here. Ovi and Semin will be okay next year. We now need a second line center for next year.
Happy Trails to you and Do Svidagnya, Sergei.
