"Philadelphia gets: Steve Eminger, D
Washington gets: John Carlson, D
Looking back: Over the following nine months, Eminger would find his way to two more teams via trade and Philadelphia ultimately ended up with an underwhelming, but blossoming Matt Carle to play an offensive role on the back end."Washington dropped a player who wasn’t giving them anything they couldn’t immediately replace and Carlson could very well put up more points in his rookie season than Eminger had over five years with the club (43)…especially alongside Mike Green."

Said bully is counting his chickens before they’ve hatched ;)
Carle worked out pretty well for the Flyers, which is what the trade ultimately boils down to for them. They needed a good D fast, to fill injury holes on the blueline.

Eminger and Downie for Carle doesn’t make Eminger and a mid-round pick worth John Carlson. The Eminger/Carlson trade was before the FA period even started so Holmgren wasn’t contemplating injury replacements vs. a future pay off. He thought that Eminger was a better choice than bringing in Carlson and waiting for him to develop. He was wrong on that front, regardless of how he managed to salvage the mistake by taking advantage of TBL.

Could this be GMGM’s greatest act of highway robbery (I know it is too early to tell)? or would it be Feds for Ruth? or Adam Oates for 4 picks?
I liked how he turned Brian Sutherby into Huet…That was looking like a complete steal until Huet didn’t re-sign.
Huet got us into the playoffs and Sutherby has already moved on. It was a steal regardless of Huet not resigning and given his contract and his performance it’s better that he was here for a short time.

Hockey Future has Ruth as Columbus’ #5 ranked prospect.
We should continue to trade with Philadelphia as much as possible.
Actually, its not even Philadelphia who looks the worst in this deal...
Its Tampa Bay.
Remember, they traded Dan Boyle to get Carle, then they turned around and traded Carle to Philly for Eminger and Steve Downie, and then they traded Eminger to Florida for Noah Welch and a 3rd Round pick.
So in other words, they traded Dan Boyle for Noah Welch, Steve Downie and a 3rd round pick….ouch.

Not exactly.
The Lightning traded Carle and Lukowich for a first round pick, a fourth round pick, Ty Wishart, and Carle. Then they traded Carle for Eminger, Dowie, and a fourth round pick. Then they traded Eminger for Noah Welch and a third round pick.
So in essence they traded Boyle and Lukowich for a first round pick, a third round pick, two fourth round picks, Steve Downie, Ty Wishart, and Noah Welch
After the playoffs in which Eminger looked solid, I thought he’d won over the organization. So I was shocked and disappointed when GMGM traded him. Same thing with the Peter Bondra-Brooks Laich trade and Robert Lang-Flash and a 1st rounder trade.
I’ll never doubt George McPhee again.

This is what confounds me about the Caps organization and the way fans seem to view McPhee. McPhee has, at least from my seat, done a very good job trading. If you compare his selloff to that of, say, Pittsburgh when the two teams were in similiar straits earlier in the decade, McPhee ended up with better returns.
Now, when it comes to drafting? The Caps seem to get so little after the first round. From 1998 to the present, the Caps have had only two players picked after #30 who have played more than 20 games with the team (Matt Pettinger, Nolan Yonkman; John Oduya and Krys Barch have plaed more than 50 games, but they’ve done it with other teams). Is McPhee the problem here (if there is one) or is that problem bigger?

I think there’s a problem within scouting/development, and that resources may be better spent elsewhere. Carlson aside, the only other USHL guy since 05 (that I know of) on or just outside of making a roster is Goligoski. Stick to juniors and Europe/Russia, with the occasional hedge bet on a college player, since I presume most of the USHL guys are going there anyway*.

There are a few others. Most notable (of the last ten years): Kyle Okposo, T.J. Oshie, Justin Abdelkader, Jared Boll, Blake Wheeler, Matt Carle, David Backes, and Ryan Malone.
Though Abdelkader went through college too, didn’t he?

He might have had the biggest game-winning goal in Michigan State hockey history

Scored with 18.9 seconds left in the National Championship game in 2007 to break a 1-1- tie against BC.

Could it be the way the Caps have historically developed their players? Systems, facilities, etc…I have no idea how much any of those would have an effect on the players…if at all..but I think it’s worth noting. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time in franchise history that the Caps’ AHL affiliate has been teaching the same system the parent club utilizes. Combine that with nicer facilities at all levels and maybe the team is finally giving their prospects the chance to succeed.
