I thought this pic was pretty cool, too:

Awesome photo...
…maybe next year it’s Ovie holding the Conn Smythe and Feds holding the Stanley Cup?

Now wait just a minute
The NHL just had to get all this stuff wrong. The ballots must have been miscounted, the envelopes switched… something
Here is how the awards should have gone…
Vezina… Carey Price
Norris… Andrei Markov
Pearson… Alex Kovalev
Adams… Guy Carbonneau
Hart… Alex Kovalev
And as for the first team NHL All-Stars…
Left Wing… Alex Tanguay
Center… Saku Koivu
Right Wing… Alex Kovalev
Defense… Andrei Markov
Defense… Mike Komisarek
Goaltender… Carey Price
Signed,
Montreal, where stuffing isn’t just for turkeys

You know, I thought something was weird last night…

I find that reassuring in a lot of ways, because it says that they really do want to win it all and they’re not just here to have a good time like I’ve sometimes thought they are.
I still thought the hot trophy was funny, because it was Ovi laughing at himself.

Btw, Boudreau finishing 11th in Adams voting is a joke, and not really a funny one.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The media only cares about “the big story” – Boudreau did his job this season and he did it well, which is nothing but a ZZZ article in the eyes of writers.
I dunno. He finished behind Barry Trotz – whose team didn’t even make the playoffs and who has no neck – with a 50-win/100+point team that overcame massive injuries to key players. i just don’t get it.

It’s all about exceeding the standard – Boudreau set the standard last season by turning around a rough start and putting them on pace for (IIRC) a 108 point season, which was, at the time, amazing. Boudreau kept that same pace this season, and while that was spectacular, it was at the standard, not above it. No award consideration for him.
He gets consideration if the Caps go 120+.
The Adams is one of the weirdest awards in that it’s usually kind of a mystery really how much a coach does or does not contribute to a team’s success. Julien won because the 8th place team became the 1st place team in one year, without dramatic changes. My guess is Bruce was so low because of the greater awareness of how much talent is on this team, inferring that BB just needs to show up and let them play.
I wonder if Boudreau will (after winning once) always suffer from good player syndrome. Much like Crosby and Malkin are unlikely to win the Hart while on the same team, one must wonder if Boudreau can win while Ovechkin, Green, Backstrom, Semin, Varlamov (etc, etc) are playing so well. Should he be able to? Certainly, but the Caps would have to go on a real tear.
It’s a lot like the Masterton award, it’s about overcoming adversity, not being the best. Now, in no way do I think BB was the best (honestly, I think the 3 finalists deserved their nominations), but I have to think he’d be top 5-6.

Bergeron came back from a concussion (only played 10 games last year), and Blake Wheeler was new to the team, Fernandez only played in 4 games last year, They added Ryder….so there was definitely an upgraded team over the previous year.

Julien won because the 8th place team became the 1st place team in one year, without dramatic changes.
That same 8th place team also became the 2nd best scoring offense and best defense in the League. He continues to improve teams in one manner or another everywhere he’s gone and hasn’t received recognition for it.
Boudreau finishing 11th in voting is a travesty; Julien winning the award last night was a long time coming.

Then what of the coach who took the team falling out of the playoffs and led them to home ice advantage in the first round, going 18-3-4 in the process?
I had Dan Byslma on my ballot (ok, it wasn’t an official one).

I love that Wilson got 2 3rd place votes for his job in Toronto. He deserves it for dealing with what he had to deal with…

Also, that’s a snazzy suit for Alex. I like the blue. It’s a nice change from his usual red.

yeah, where that spare tire Wysh was talking about? Because I’m not seeing it.
The tux screams “Never Been to a big event before!” He should have used Ovie’s stylist.
i think that was Leahy who made the spare tire comment.

Well, that should go on the Scarlet Caps website.

But for tragedy and the untimely death of his grandfather, Ovie would have been walking away with a 4-bagger for the second year in a row. Godlike.

I blame a whole month of slumping with backstrom, otherwise who knows what those two’s stats would have been like.

Ovie really toned down the outfit this year. Last year it was all flash, this year, serious business.

Interesting fact in the voting...
Steve Mason was (rightfully so) the run away choice for the Calder Trophy for the last couple months of the season, yet Ovechkin still won the Hart by a larger margin than Mason won the Calder (although got fewer first place votes).
115 out of 133 first place votes is dominating. I wonder when we will start hearing how AO “edged out” Malkin for the Hart (a la the 2006 Calder Trophy).

since i’m not as gifted in statistics as others, i’d considered having my first fanpost be a rundown of all AO’s (predominantly blonde) ladies over the years. preferably with a poll at the end. (i mean, hey, if the ladies can have their scarlet caps…)
the task proved too daunting.

As a female, let me say that website is a serious waste of bandwith.

you’ve obviously yet to experience the fun that is discovering Tom Poti’s favorite food is pancakes. Or maybe that’s only fun after a few too many shots.

backlash from the same japers’ rink community members that were posting and rec’ing the half-naked theodore and laich pictures earlier this season? i haven’t actually journeyed into the heart of the scarlet caps site…is it the concept or the execution that disagrees with you?
by Natty Bumppo on Jun 19, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Clearly that was before my time. I’m also old enough to be the mother of many of the players, so that may or may not affect my attitude. On the other hand, I can still admire the handiwork. But that’s not what I’m looking for in a hockey website.
The problem with Scarlet Caps, at least to this point, is a severe lack of content. Also, I was hoping there’d be an ability for interaction among members there — my friends are not wild hockey fans, so my hockey discussions are either here or with my family.
gotcha. yeah, i think my reaction had more to do with the three rec’s you received within minutes of your comment! my “ovie prefers blondes” fanpost idea came at the height of the lady power movement on japers’.
