Awards Ceremony Open Thread
If you can't make it out to the Puck Daddy/Japers' Rink viewing party tonight, feel free to pop open a cold one and hang out here to discuss all the evening's goings-on.
Norris or Hart? Both.

Murray did well with not that much, but I think when you take a team that really hasn’t been that dominant at all and put together the kind of season the B’s had (without really any proven franchise players except maybe Chara), that’s pretty impressive.
That said, none of them would have been undeserving, I just think Julien did the best job.

I hope he remembers that moment every time he winds up that slapshot in ‘09-’10 and “unleashes his fury” on them. Even better if he remembers this in practice and while he does conditioning!

Rockin' the Red in Section 412

"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
he came in with some much fun swagger its impossible not to love him. its so endearingly real. Not “Oh, aren’t I great?” swagger, but “oh boy, I get to play hockey all the time and I just love it and isn’t this the greatest thing ever, huh, huh?! Oh, a puck, SCORE!!! YAY! Now, where are the chicks?”
XD Yes, that’s Ovi in a nutshell. Ovi’s charm and charisma is completely artless, and I think that’s what keeps him from being annoying sometimes. He’s so genuine he just makes you smile.
The hot trophy thing was another good gag, in part because he’s laughing at himself.

Ovie’s English always surprises me. I know a second language (French) and can’t even imagine being charming and humorous in it, let alone in one with a different alphabet entirely.
Rockin' the Red in Section 412
every time I try to be charming and funny in another language, I just end up insulting someone.
Which, unsurprisingly, happens fairly frequently in english, too.
Think about how much he gets to practice it, though. And he’s got Green and Laich to teach him jokes. That’s an undeniably privileged core of teachers.

Rockin' the Red in Section 412

Nah. Would never be Semin. I can see Laich doing it, I can see Fedorov doing it, and I can see Ovechkin doing it.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
At least the Russian alphabet is one that’s analogous to ours. In a way, translating between the characters in our alphabet to the Cyrillic alphabet is like translating the letters to the codes we used to represent letters in the secret messages we wrote as kids. We would use different symbols to represent each letter.
Similar in many ways. Then the Russians have a single character to represent the “ch” sound and the “sh” sound, not to mention the “ts” sound.
At least, there’s a system for transcribing.
It would be even harder to translate to the characters in Asian languages, like Chinese and Japanese.
Cyrillic really isn’t that tough once you get used to it. But they def have words we don’t use and their sentence structure can be very odd at times. Not to mention they just do things different, like “Tu tu tu” thing that Pasha did, that’s basically like the “knocking on wood” thing you would do if you were honoring someone, to start an applause. Which makes sense, he was talking about all the kids.
I wonder how close the Polish (not to mention the Czech or Slovak) language is to Russian. They’re all Slavic languages that use the Roman (i.e. our alphabet) instead of Cyrillic. It seems that many of the same last names occur in both Polish and Russian. Of course, they’re spelled differently in this country. And most Polish last names are mispronounced in this country. They use the “c” character to represent the “ts” sound and “cz” to represent the “ch” sound.
for those of us who avoided the Chaka Kahn festival with some hockey thrown in, what exactly did he say?
Thomas? he gave a heartfelt speech, mentioned that he never imagined being on the Vezina, just wanted to be on the roster, etc.
Rockin' the Red in Section 412
Well, Pittsburgh still has the Cup but there is a slight measure of satisfaction knowing that virtually every Penguin fan is pissed that their boy got his clock cleaned twice by Ovie. I bet there’s some serious whining going on over at their boards.
Let’s face it and be honest. The Penguins were the better team this year, but Ovi does by himself what it takes Malkin and Crosby together to do for the Pens.
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." - Delores Ibarruri
