The rest of the release:
Laing, 30, played one game for Washington last season. He was recalled by the Caps from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League on March 19 and played the entire game (10:19) at Tampa Bay despite suffering a torn spleen on his second shift in the first period. Laing ended the game with a +1 rating.
The 6’2", 210-pound native of Rosetown, Saskatchewan, spent most of the season with the Calder Cup champion Bears. He tallied 25 points (9g-16a) in 55 regular-season games before his recall. Laing missed more than two months with his spleen injury, but he returned to the Bears during the Calder Cup playoffs and had two goals and two assists in nine games.
Laing was drafted by Detroit in the fourth round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, 102nd overall. He has played in 43 career NHL games (40 with Washington and three with Chicago) and has one goal and six assists. He was signed by Washington as a free agent on July 18, 2006.

In between that and the Constanza picture in the Semin Wrap, I can skip watching channel 5 tonight.

When I saw the Caps Alert, I thought it would be another message saying I lost yet another contest……this is much better than that!
I hope not. I like Laing, I respect what he does, I’m jealous that he gets to play the sport of his choice for money, but he’s not a full-time NHL talent.
One-way deal doesn’t mean he’s going to be in the NHL, it just means he gets paid the same whether he’s in the NHL or AHL.

If you are sent back down, don’t you have to clear waivers first on a one-way?
by Weber-TK421 on Jun 17, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Laing has to go through waivers going up or down because of his age.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Re-entry waivers for 09-10: for players making more than $105,000 in the minors whether due to a higher AHL salary on a two-way deal or on a one-way contract where paid NHL salary in the AHL. There is an exemption for minor league vets and based on my math, I believe Aucoin and Laing will both qualify for the exemption.
The threshold is 80 games on the NHL roster (not games played, but games on the roster) the last 2 seasons combined or 40 games on the roster in the previous season.
The rule specifies that games out due to injury count for this rule so one has to use the transaction wire to identify games on the NHL roster. Based on a quick read, it does not specify regular season games vs regular season and playoff games.
For Laing. He meets the 320+ pro NA games played part of the rule. In 07-08: By my count, he was on the NHL roster for 57 regular season games plus 7 playoff games. 08-09: By my count, he was on the NHL roster for 10 games. This is based on the AHL transaction log and the Washington Capitals game schedule. So it’s 67 or 74 depending on the playoff games if I ran the numbers correctly and even if I am off by a game or two (I’ll double check later if anyone wants an exact number), it looks like it does not matter and he will qualify for the exemption. So he will have to clear waivers on the way down, but regardless of a one way deal or a two way deal with a nice AHL salary of more than $105,000, he will not have to clear re-entry on the way up if he is recalled.
For Aucoin: I checked the numbers earlier this season for Aucoin and I don’t think anything changed. He will be on a one way NHL contract for 09-10, but meets the minor league vet exemption so no re-entry waivers.
sorry if this is a bit wordy :)
Thanks for the clarification.

I wonder if it’s a one-way deal too. The timing of this leads me to speculate maybe the Caps stepped to the plate and offered him a one-way deal.
I know Laing likes the Caps organization, is comfortable within it, etc but just from a career decision why would he sign right now without even hitting the open market to see if one of the 29 other teams might give him a one-way contract?
by Hooks Orpik on Jun 17, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I’d be pretty shocked if anyone out there were going to give Laing a one-way offer. Plus his family is probably settled in the Hershey area. Plus we don’t know the terms of the deal; all two-way contracts aren’t created equal – he might be getting 50% of his NHL salary even if he’s in the A.
I’m sure JP or someone with wider knowledge of the CBA will correct me if I’m wrong, but I know that two-way contracts are capped on how much you can earn. I want to say it is $100k maximum for a two-way player in the minors.
I agree it’s probably a long-shot another organization gives Laing a one-way deal, but what does it hurt to test? The difference could be ~$375k (since the league minimum is about $475k).

Per Tim Leone, “The one-year deal for 2009-10 is a two-way contract.”

On the day we're jabbering over Semin's contributions
It’s good to see this news. What a contrast: The Popular, Handsome Athlete (with the hockey IQ of a rabbit) compared to the Homely, Really Smart Kid who didn’t get a date to the Prom.

Okay – since you’re going to ask – Semin is the Popular Athlete and Laing is the Homely Kid. ;)

thanks for posting the link, so I could read this:
The Hurricanes went through 65 minutes of hockey and a shootout without putting a single puck past Cristobal Huet with their sticks and yet somehow came away with a point that likely seals the deal on a Southeast Division title.
and smile and mildly re-live what had to be the craziest season in Capitals history.
something else we can take from that post (also in the comments):
PPP said…
Ok boys, now that the Leafs are out of it I want to see a Washington playoff run.
Best of luck the rest of the way and hopefully the Leafs do you guys a favour and win tomorrow night and beat the Sabres.
based on the results the last few tries, maybe it’s time PPP finds another bandwagon? :)

funny, without knowing anything about the “rabbit IQ” comment, I called the Care Bear Line the “Fluffy Bunny Line” all season. as in “oh god, not the fluffy bunnies!” The bunnies had this nasty habit of getting so cute and then ended up looking like road kill, as my mother so delicately put it one night. (“The fluffy bunnies were roadkill tonight.” “Gee, thanks mom. I love you too. Did Timmy let any 80 foot flutters by him tonight?”)
FWIW, personally i do think semin’s hockey sense continues to improve. not to steal from the quentin lang post’s thunder, but semin’s playoff performances (and international appearances) make me believe semin’s head issues are more about focus than hockey IQ.

Laing is that right winger for the first line we’ve been looking for. They’ll have to really train him to not block shots while screening\crashing the opposing goalie though.
Laing is that right winger for the first line we’ve been looking for.
Minus the skating, stickhandling, shooting, passing, offensive awareness, vision, and talent.
Don’t you bad mouth one of our prospects like that…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah, that was terrible DMG.
Skating? He has feet.
Stick handling? He has a stick AND hands.
Shooting? Maybe you have him on that…but he’ll score 30 just deflecting AO shots off his body.
Passing? I’ve seen this boy pass!
Vision? He has eyes.
Talent? is overrated.
I should refer you to your own definition of “prospect” here…

I know PennState has a great cardiac research facility in Hershey. Maybe we could convince them to transplant Laing’s heart in Semin’s body. The result would be mind-boggling.

Great News!!
I’ve always liked this guy. He has heart and grit. Even though he won’t be in a Capitals sweater full time, he is a great injury call up when needed.
Love this signing.
Congrats JP
When you get 40 comments in four hours after posting something about Quintin Laing, you are doing something very right. Nice work dude.

I’m a little verklempt…talk amongst yourselves. OK, I’ll give you a topic. Quintin Laing is not dead wood, DISCUSS.
I have almost no free time during the course of the day but I make time for Japers’ Rink. It’s mesmerizing.

At the risk of being lost at the bottom of the thread...
I think it’s highly significant that this is McPhee’s first act of the offseason. The implication is that this one was a no-brainer and there was no point waiting. But the message is broader. Everyone in the organization knows who Quintin is and how he plays. Laing is one of at least a half a dozen players who earned themselves another year and will sign their offer this offseason with no negotiation. But after the way he has sacrificed, after the sheer effort he’s so obviously exerted, it’s fitting that Laing gets his reward first.
Much like making him the Masterton candidate, this has the effect of making him an internal poster-boy for “The Capitals Way.” I approve.

Laing quote on being re-signed:
"I wasn’t expecting a phone call like that so soon," said Laing. "But it was good news, and as soon as I heard, I said ‘Sign me up.’
"It really kind of caught me off guard, but it’s nice to find out so early in the summer where you’ll be in training camp."
