Carlson to USA World Juniors Camp
Via WCHB, John Carlson is one of the invitees to USA Hockey's World Juniors evaluation camp in Lake Placid later this summer (and don't worry, Caps fans - the USA Hockey camp runs from August 7-15, long after Development Camp at Kettler is done).

Ha. Funny that they want him now, too bad he’ll probably be preoccupied playing for the Bears/Caps when the WJC’s roll around. I bet they’re kicking themselves that they snubbed him last year, he probably could have done some good.
Participating players are candidates for the 2010 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, from Dec. 26, 2009-Jan. 5, 2010, in Saskatoon and Regina, Sask.

Ah yes, Regina. Always fun to say.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

As I tweeted, “Guess they could only ignore him so long.”

Depending, it probably wouldn’t be a bad thing to let him to play in the WJCs, regardless of where he may be at the current moment. At that age, it is kinda a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Once-in-a-lifetime if you’re Canadian. I don’t know how many American kids would pick playing in the WJCs over playing the team you won a Calder Cup with. Tough to say though.
It’s a championship where you’re playing for your country against the world. I think he’d probably be all over that.

Maybe if Team USA was going to be a real Gold Medal contender it would make a difference but Team USA isn’t going in there as a favorite. I think he’s probably feeling a little burned about the last WJC and his primary goal is to make the NHL. I can’t see him passing up a major role in Hershey or an injury call up role for the Caps to go play against lower competition for a team that probably won’t win it. The only way I see him accepting the offer is if he is playing in London again, which I highly doubt.
I notice Adam Comrie (Florida draft pick) is on the camp roster. Played a few PUs out at the Ashburn rink a year or so ago. Nice kid..didn’t try to hot dog it even though he could have. Thankfully I ended up being on the same side, heh.
If John Carlson were a stock, I’d buy.
Carlson played most of last year on the same team (the London Knights) as John Tavares, the consensus #1 draft pick in this year’s draft. Tavares won one of the team’s post-season awards: “Leading Scorer.” Carlson won five awards: “Booster Club Player Of The Year,” “Play-Off Performer of the Year” (joint with Michael Del Zotto), “Best Defenceman,” “Rookie of the Year,” and “MVP.”
John Walton (the Bears radio guy) and Tim Leone (their beat writer) are on record as saying they don’t expect to see Carlson much in Hershey next year. They think he’s going to play most of the year with the Caps. Hell, he almost made the Caps coming out of training camp this past year. I think there’s an argument to be made that he’s matched or even passed Alzner in terms of development. I can’t wait to see what this guy can do in the NHL.
Plus, he’s a killer – the good kind, not the Heatley/Stallworth kind.
