JP Nominated For Leadership In New Media Writing
Since he would not post this himself . . . JP has been nominated for the Glenn Anderson Leadership in Writing Award, an award bestowed by the HockeyBarn.com Writers’ Association (HBWA) upon the writer "who demonstrates a desire to help build and grow the popularity of ice hockey, both throughout North America and across the globe." Nominees were selected by HBWA "based upon their outstanding levels of commitment, quality, and service to new media in hockey." The award will be presented by Glenn Anderson on June 17. Raise a glass and three cheers to JP!

Yeah, but whatever. I’ll make sure they correct it before the award goes to the engraver. :)

as long as it doesn’t say Jasper’s Rink, the award is a nice tribute to how far this site has come. congrats!

You don’t work for the Natinals, so you should be OK. Congrats.

Thanks, Pep, and thanks to everyone who must’ve seen this and acted upon it.
I’ll say this, though – it’s nice recognition, and I truly think it reflects on all four of the writers for this site (Pepper, DMG, Tuvanhillbilly and myself) as well as the rest of our community. I find that sometimes “JP” is shorthand for the entire site, it seems, and I think that’s the case here.

While you certainly have some serious contributing talent surrounding you JP, the whole Rink “community” was founded upon and has grown because of your character, humor, and willingness to engage us visitors. Even though 99% of us haven’t met you in person, we feel like we know you, and that’s a testament to you and the product you put out.
Well deserved, my friend.
I’ve read Japers’ Rink forever, but I never got an account until now, just so I could show my thanks. Congrats, JP, on the nomination—you’re a top-notch journalist, and it’s great to see that being recognized. You’ve got by far the best Caps-related website on the net, and that includes the official Caps site.

NOW we’re talkin’!
from the house that Red Jesus built
That’s significantly more appealing than the similar A-Rod pic.

Smashing, JP. As you stated it’s representative of not only your second-to-none efforts but those of your writers and community as well.
Richly deserved!
Look who's talking
Good luck to you as well sir in the ‘Rookie Writer of the Year’ category.

Congratulations JP and the whole Rink team! I probably visit this blog 25 times a day and on game days it basically stays in it’s own tab all day.
Excellent writing, analysis and commenting with the user base. A true Capitals community.
To all four writers and the entire Japer’s community: Well deserved honor and recognition. Not only are the main articles informative, funny and well-written but the comments never devolve into infantile puffery as they do on so many other general and fan sites.
By the way, having met Zephyr, I think it’s great that he is focused enough to remember to visit the blog 25 times a day. That’s a real compliment to the Rink.
Every year without a Cup adds wonder and awe to its eventual arrival.
Well done, JP! Well done! And most well deserved. And they say that the web has killed “real” journalism? I say piffle to that and point, for proof, to you. Here is a quality of analysis and insight that far exceeds the ‘other’ press. But you also have (and it shows) a respect for the sport of hockey and for all those who risk life and limb to skate out there to entertain and thrill us. It’s not a job you do here, it’s love. And we appreciate that. Thank you.
Hey, thanks again to everyone for these exceptionally kind words. They’re both humbling and invigorating.

A question/proposal
When are we all going to meet up this summer so that we can buy you copious amounts of beer to celebrate your newfound notoriety and the Caps’ season more generally?
Funny you should ask… stay tuned.

Jacob is a talented writer with a sharp eye for backing up what he says with evidence and for expressing what we all know in the backs of our minds to be true. But that’s only a small part of what the award he’s nominated for is about. Let’s talk leadership for a minute
Glenn Anderson Leadership in Writing Award:
Awarded to the writer who demonstrates a desire to help build and grow the popularity of ice hockey, both throughout North America and across the globe
In the past year, Jacob has brought together a team of four very talented writers. The SB version of the Rink really is much more than the sum of its parts (TheRedSkate, CapsBlueLine, Tuvanhillbilly and the blogspot version of the Rink). Synergy is a term that gets thrown around a lot these days, but the four of you build on each other in unexpected and really valuable ways.
But Jacob’s still the leader, and he shows it more than anywhere with his firm but generous hand on the comment threads. Stick around here for a while, and it’s not hard to figure out where “the line” is. And I’ve very rarely seen anyone cross the line more than once or twice. Typically after the first personal attack, there’s JP telling folks they’re out of line, followed (almost always) by an apology, and then — crucially — by a kind word from Jacob. That’s leadership, and it’s an incredibly tough balance to find on a message board. The proof is that JP doesn’t even have to do it anymore — other regulars have started to take his lead and police the site on their own. It’s a healthy community that self-regulates, and Jacob deserves the credit.
And that leadership extends to the open opportunity we all have to contribute. In retrospect, I’m not sure you all knew how good the move to SB Nation was going to be. But when anyone has photos or a story or an opinion to share, up goes a fan post or a fan shot. I’ve obviously taken a lot of advantage of this, and I’ve gained a lot from it. This has got to be just about the most welcoming place in the hockey internet, and Jacob has done a lot to foster that atmosphere by enforcing a respectful tone that makes folks want to keep coming back to post again.
The Rink is now the essential place for Caps’ news and analysis, supplanting the newspapers’ blogs. One of the big reasons is Jacob’s generosity in linking to others and giving credit. The Caps’ are unquestionably the most blog-friendly and blog-focused team in the NHL, and the Rink is unquestionably the leader among Caps’ blogs. Well done!
Thanks, Gouldie. Those words are so kind, I feel bad pointing out that the “J” in “JP” stands for Jon, not Jacob. But I’ll humbly take the compliments nonetheless.
