The Caps are Interested in Re-Signing Brent Johnson
Per his agent Pat Brisson.
What this means for Theodore, I do not know.

Glad to hear BJ1 may get re-signed. I’d rather see that then see Sergei Fedorov re-signed.
uhh...uhh...uhh...

While I think it’s encouraging, if I were Johnny, I’d think hard about it. Unless Theo is out, he could end up signing a contract and then be traded, or worse (for him), sent on waivers and claimed by another team. You know he wants to be here. Loves the team, loves the area and is married to a local. Not to mention coming off a season ending injury. That makes it pretty easy to keep him, but the real risk is all his.
Bingo – agent says there’s demand for his client and we believe it?

I don’t believe anything until its official, but its fun to spend time during the work day pondering ramifications and options.

This worries me a little. Granted, if he came back for two more years, to be the 2A goalie with Jose/Semyon, he’d be here and not play a ton this year, but would be here next next season to backup Varly exclusively, with Neuvirth probably usurping him mid-season.
if for $8m, we have 2 #1s and a pure #2 for the next two years, I’d be happy with that (that’s with BJ bringing in $2m or less), but I don’t know how that’s going to work if not for 2 years.
i also worry about keeping Neuvirth in the A for too long — it’s clear that he’s established himself as an elite goaltender already and will have little left to prove next season, Calder Cup or no.

This is a move I’ve always thought they might make — and then buy out Jose if they can’t trade him (and they probably can’t). Johnny’s no older than Jose, played well when he was healthy, and is a locker room guy. A Varly, Nuevy, Johnny duke-it-out at training camp would be interesting. AND they can likely sign Johnny for < $1M/season or something close to that.
FWIW (next to nothing) but through a friend I met people close with Johnson’s family this weekend and they seemed to believe he would almost certainly be staying in Washington….One even said that he had re-signed with the Caps, but was quickly discredited by a “not yet”.
Pure hear-say, but the agent talking adds a little piece of credibility to it.
I noticed something while pondering the Heatley issue that might explain this: We need to think about Neuvirth in the same year as Backstrom and Semin. By resigning Johnny, BB and GMGM keeep their goalie options open, and even if Holtby doesn’t pan out for some reason, we still have options.
I’d like to see BJ1 come back too – I like him and he was solid when he played.

He was stellar at times this year. I’d really like to see him come back and play even better than before. It really looked like he hit a new stride in his game. I think Olie being gone helped him.
Gould Old Dayd did a fan post on what buying out Theo would look like
If we buy Theo out, a resign Johnny for say 1.2 million, the 1.5 buyout hit + 1.25 million Jonny Salary would only be 2.75 million. That would be 1.75 less than Theo’s regular cap hit.
Might it make financial sense?

also, the 1.5 million Theo cap hit would carry over into the 2010-2011 season but I assumed everyone would be aware of that. Whether Jonny stays for 2 years, or Neuvy steps up it would be a manageable cap number even with the Theo buyout.

For the buyout Theo/sign Johnson lobby, consider:
a) If he gets $1.2m, then you’ve giving a 50% raise to a guy coming off season-ending surgery, only to be in the same situation you are now.
b) You’re paying $1.5m next year when some people think the cap might drop by 10% or worse, maybe go under $50 million.
c) If Varlamov gives you numbers similar to what Ward did his first full year as a starter, those numbers turn out to be worse than what Theodore did this year, and you’re back to having $1.5m in buyout money on a tight cap when you could have let it go off the books.
all reasonable arguments. For some reason I had it in my mind that Jonny made 950K. Considering he made 825K, he could be resigned for a lot less than 1.25. Maybe even as low as 900K which would be the ballpark of a 10% raise.
I’m not saying the buyout of theo is a good idea, only that it might be less of a financial handcuff than I thought.

Sorry — missed this thread last week because I flew to Europe for vacation. Anyway, I predict Johnny signs for 850 K.
One of the most interesting questions of the offseason to me is whether Leonsis is willing to eat almost 10 million for players who are not on the roster (Theo and Nylander). There may be an opportunity for them to come off the salary cap without being bought out, if Theo goes to the AHL and Nylander to the KHL.
It’s not so much eating those salaries – he’s paying them any way you slice it, just about – as much as it is doing something with the money having them off the roster would free up, even if it’s only done for the last two months of the season. I know that’s your point, but I figured I’d clarify it.
