"The shoddy ice at the Mellon Arena has become an issue. Ovechkin and Boudreau complained about it following Wednesday's Game 3 and Orpik today said "it's the worst I've ever seen it and it won't be any better after last night's concert." Comedian Dane Cook was on stage last night[.]"

Brilliant! My SATs woulda been better if that was one of the questions. Granted Dane Cook wasn’t around back then, but that’s not the point.
/BTW F&B thanks for hte calming words yesterday, not sure why/how he got so under my skin
I have a joke for this, but I want to make sure Louis C.K. hasn’t used it before.

We’ve already played 6 games on VC ice, 3 on MSG ice, and one on bad Mellon ice. I think they can handle another game on crappy ice.
It’s a shame that the best ice can often be found at arenas not hosting playoff hockey ;)

Thanks for making me chuckle a bit as I continue to wait out my waning hours at work today. That joke was probably funnier than anything said at Mellon last night.

No joke, this is what I want in my favorite blogs
Japer’s Rink…now with 25% MORE Dane Cook jobbing.
I hate Pittsburgh. And the Pens too.
Dear Pittsburgh,
If you’re going to affect the schedule with concerts, at least make them good. Dane Cook and Yanni?
C’mon….I mean….really?
Love,

Hey!! How dare you knock the Mystics and their three-peat “WNBA Attendance Champion” banners that hang from the hallowed rafters of the Verizon Center.
Actually, a concert would be. One basic reason: lights.
The spotlights they use generate a HUGE amount of heat. Also, the regular concert lighting – usually a 500-watt par can, or “rocklight” – think a 500-watt bulb kindof like a floodlight, only not quite? – generates heat, too. Onstage, it can be upwards of 110 degrees and more. It gets beastly.
Also, if there are fans sitting where the ice normally is, that will contribute to the heat level.
Bad ice...
This is always a complaint for teams in the playoffs playing on the road in (a) old buildings, or (b) warmer climates. I remember a few years back when the Dallas Stars made a run, and they actually had to bring mobile auxiliary dehumidifiers in semi-trailers, hooking them up to building vents via 20-inch flexihoses. The ice was still barely passable for what you’d expect professionals to play on.
Verizon Center isn’t much better. About 5 years ago, I played a college game there against UVA in April (the game was on a Sat. afternoon, hours before a Caps game). It was easily the softest ice I’ve ever played on. I must’ve lost my edge about 3 or four times on hard turns.
Point is, it’s May. The ice sucks everywhere. Run your blades a few more times across the stone and stop complaining, boys. We’re not in Edmonton.
Someday I’ll tell the story about walking past Tie Domi and Darcy Tucker in the bowels of the VC after the game…
It’s your guy complaining too, Doc, which is why it’s relevant.

What happened to not scheduling events during the playoffs?
Or did they book these events right before Bylsma was hired?

I don’t think the Pens are in charge of Melon arena. Kinda like VC having basketball on the same day as a hockey game
Yeah, but
I though it was an NHL directive or something – if it could be avoided that is. Ya know, if like the Wiz made the playoff’s.

From Ted's Blog
"It is a shame that both teams will have to play back to back games … because the Pittsburgh building—against NHL rules—booked a series of concerts and forced the league to alter the playoff schedule," Leonsis wrote recently on his blog, Ted’s Take. "This is bad for the league, both fan bases and for the players.
"The playoffs are very intense and physical and players need time to recoup. No one is advantaged by playing back to back games so no one can complain but it is unfortunate that the Yanni concert takes precedence over high quality NHL playoff hockey."

He’s incorrect – it’s not against NHL rules.

Not to carp, but I love how he says, “…so no one can complain…” in the middle of a complaint about what he’s saying nobody can complain about.
Pittsburgh Black And Gold -- So new, it still smells like paint!
Just like Crosby specifically said he wasn’t complaining about all the hats in Game 2. Agreed.
