Careful. There are very few facts out there.
Besides, I doubt it was the mayor issuing the threat on behalf of the city, so I’m not sure throwing the entire town under the bus here is appropriate anyway.

Maybe it’s just German for “The, Alex, The”?

The threat was made on the Penguins’ official message board during Game 2. It was on page 58 of the official game 2 thread, but it has sense been removed.
It was made by someone with the handle “pensforlife87” and it said “Im killing Ovechkin i’ll go to jail i dont care anymore.”

Err, that second part’s supposed to be in the blockquote, too.

update (h/t ovechwin for the lead) from the CBC local news station in pittsburgh:
And the Washington Capital’s security took the threat very seriously, contacting Pittsburgh Police who were able to trace the message back to a Chambersburg teenager.
State police in Chambersburg told KDKA’s Andy Sheehan they’ve interviewed the teenager and confiscated the computer.
State police investigators will be downloading the hard drive on that computer and are in contact with the district attorney to determine what charges will be filed.
Poor kid...
the Capitals and NHL security want to make an example of the young man that such acts will not be tolerated.
I can’t work up that much pity for him. There’ve been enough actual tragedies in recen years, that were presaged by message board mischief and committed by teenagers, that kids — those who are nearly adults — should know that they need to think twice.

I’m not surprised it turned out to be a teenager. I read the discussion about it on the Caps boards, and the language did seem to be a bit teenaged text message like.
It’s unfortunate, but people (and teenagers) need to learn to watch how they say things. Jokes and sarcasm do not translate to the internet at all, and this certainly didn’t read like a joke. Unless they find out he’s got serious mental issues, probably not much will come of it as he’s a minor.
See above quote
Or for the lazy

Let’s not get testy. It’s not like I haven’t read it too. But HE’S A MINOR. He’s not going to jail in all likelihood. Unless they find a reason to charge him with something as an adult (which is often done at that age), we’ll never hear anything else about it.
Just having the cops show up at his house and having to explain everything could be more than enough to scare the crap out of him. And keep him away from the internet for years under court order.
We became aware of an inappropriate comment on a message board and referred it to appropriate authorities.
if I had a nickel…

i understand the gravity of a death threat, but is no one else terrified that the authorities can just track down whomever they want that makes any kind of suspicious comment on the internet?
Law enforcement has had this ability for quite some time, it appears that you were just not aware of it. If you were the intended victim of these types of comments or an identity theft victim, I think you would feel differently about law enforcement tracking abilities. If nothing else, this event is a reminder to think before you put stuff up on the internet.
