I was actually shocked that they played that song at a Caps game. Gary Glitter was outed as a sex offender, and if I recall correctly, that served as enough motivation to remove that song as our goal song.

And that whole “You suck” thing? Leave it at FedEx…or Philly…or NJ…or Pittsburgh.

definitely originated at University of Maryland, but Debbie Yow forbids the band to play it any more because having the fans say “suck” does not fit with the holier than thou image she wants the school to project. Also removal of the hey song coincides with the decline in the basketball and football programs….coincidence? I think not :-)

For what it’s worth, the Caps have been playing it after goals since I started going to games in the mid-90s, and the “you suck!” addition has been going strong for many years now as well.

No argument here. Perhaps I misread what Rage is saying. My point was just that, distasteful though it may be, they’ve been doing the hey song for at least the past 15 years and the “you suck” thing for at least a significant chunk of that, so it ain’t gonna change.
