"Yes, there will be a sheet of ice in Fenway Park for a Jan. 1 Winter Classic. It's a done deal, Bruins vs. either the Capitals or Flyers. The league will make it official at the start of July, with a splashy media event in the old ballpark."

Caps or Flyers? Either will make for a fantastic game. If we don’t get this one, what other teams would we be good matches for? I’m thinking save the Flyers to play the Rangers when that inevitably happens in 2 years
on the flip side....
I think they will pick the flyers and save the Caps for the Pens either in Pittsburgh or DC in 2011….. now that would be an event
I disagree
Pens have already played. No matter how good a draw, it’s not fair to the rest of the league to use them again that soon.
Also, do you really want to have to share the spotlight with Pittsburgh for the Winter Classic? I don’t.
Fair? To the rest of the league? On what basis do you even think that is a factor?

you’re right, i completely forgot about the first one with buffalo. and I didnt say I wanted to share the spotlight with them. I just think after that series the league is going to try and do anything they can to get these two teams back on the ice on national TV. so forget about my comment, the league would be much better served to pit the caps against the b’s and save the flyers for the rags
Ohplease ohplease ohplease
I would sell my unborn children to go to this WC game, if the Caps are in it. I lived in Boston briefly, during the mid-’90s lockout, and the fact that I never got to see a hockey game in the old Garden before it was demolished still makes me a little bitter.
My sister lives in Worcester…I would go up for the game there in a second

My guess from the league perspective would be Bruins/Caps, but no guarantees. I see them wanting Alex Ovechkin in the Winter Classic.
Starting to save money NOW for that trip. Maybe we can get together and pin down a block of hotel rooms if there’s enough of us. And if it isn’t the Caps, saved money is never a bad thing.

What might the criteria be for deciding on the visiting team? Other than wanting Ovi in the game, which makes loads of sense, of course, what might the league consider?
Or to put it another way, what has Philly got to offer that would make them a more enticing opponent in the Winter Classic? Carter and Biron? Two Cup wins so long ago that the Caps were a brand-new team when they happened?
