In a poll of 292 players, Alex Ovechkin became the first back-to-back winner [of Sporting News' player of the year award] since Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr (1999-2000). The top three:
1. Alex Ovechkin, Capitals 147
2. Evgeni Malkin, Penguins 65
3. Pavel Datsyuk, Red Wings 23

It's no contest, Alex wins
It always makes me laugh when other teams’ fans call him dirty. The players certainly don’t think so.
i wonder about that sometimes. orpik said he thinks AO is trying to hurt people (and indicated that other pens felt the same way). just gamesmanship during an intense playoff series, or the developing sentiment around the NHL?

Orpik, in professional terms, is “projecting.”

players seem to have forgotten that there is a difference between hitting your opponent as hard as possible (intimidation) vs. intent to injure/dirty hits.
lame.

I think most folks think Ovechkin is reckless, and doesn’t consider injury risk to himself or anyone else enough in how he plays. I don’t think too many players think he’s actually trying to hurt someone, but I do think they wish he’d be more careful.
I wish he’d be more careful.

I could understand if an opposing player were to confront AO in the locker room and say something like, “You’re everyone’s problem. That’s because every time you go out on the ice, you’re unsafe. I don’t like you because you’re dangerous.”

sounds like something a team captain might want to breach Ovie . he might top player in the world, but he’s still young and needs guidance.

“That’s right Bett…Man. I am dangerous.”

The players got it right. Hopefully the writers did too. guess that makes him a lock for the Pearson.
i would LOVE to know which players voted, and for whom.

It’s not just that he won — it’s by how much. You have to think that a bunch of players will vote for their own teammates. Once you account for that, Ovechkin’s margin of victory is even more impressive. He got more than half the votes!
I think there is a rule against voting for a player from your team in a lot of those player voted awards

Yeah, Sports Illustrated did one of those too. It’s in the new issue. Alex won 51% there.
Otherwise, why I got this magazine I have no idea, other than it was a cheap subscription so I thought I’d try it. Ugh.
I actually like Sports Illustrated, when they’re not trying to shove basketball down my throat (No problem with NCAA basketball, but NBA is boring as hell).
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Crosby gets 1.9%. Not sure I agree, but who cares…
I’m waiting for Arguably Magazine to announce their MVP. It should be a lock since the media always says “Alex Ovechkin, Arguably the best player in the world.”

Speaking of Russians, did anyone notice the Kozlov interview on OFB where he said he would probably take less money to come back next year? I bet his agent loved that.
Geezers line!
Clark – Fedorov – Kozlov ?
Brashear – Fedorov – Kozlov ????
On second thought, perhaps no.

b.orr, thanks for pointing that out. here’s the correct link.
If you were offered to stay in Washington, but with a reduced contract, would you agree?
“I would probably agree. But I don’t know how many years I would last there. You know that an athlete’s [career] is short. At the same time I am hearing that the KHL is a very
interesting league. I was following the Gagarin Cup and caught myself thinking that it would be interesting to play in the Russian [league]. Right now I am at a crossroads. I don’t know what turn my career would take. It is good in America, and it is also interesting back home. I have not made a firm decision yet. But I hope to make it soon.”

less money than we paid him this season, or less money than the KHL would offer? Could be a big difference…
