His lateral movement — on this play and on others — is ridonkulous.

Also his puck sense. Could he have eyes in the back of his head? And above each ear? Maybe there are mirrors in his mask.

I need to stop.

Hellaciously quick.

Totally riDONKulous!

The closest thing I can remember to a save like that in the playoffs for the Caps was Olie’s kick save against the Sabres during the Cup run.

Those saves just don’t happen for the Caps… especially not tied at 2, especially not in the playoffs, and especially not against the Pens. Please tell me this is a sign…

hopefully Puck Daddy finally puts Varlamov in his little top 10 playof MVP candidate list.
He’s been so adamantly against it to this point. time to eat crow.

Still not on the top 10 but Semin’s pretty high

This shot is pretty sweet. (via TEB and Caps Insider)

On the Metro Back...

…one of the Pens fans said that it was a “good loss”.

Gotta remind folks, these are the Stanley Cup playoffs… there’s no such thing as a Good Loss or a Cheap Win. There are only wins and losses, and the Caps won today… :)

Let's go Caps!

by MikeL-Pivonka on May 2, 2009 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

And this being the playoffs, I gotta say that 2d Pens goal cannot happen again. Missing the glove save cannot happen again.

uhh...uhh...uhh...

Probable message board post on The Official :

Varlamov let in one softie and he totally could have had Crosby’s shot. I told you they should have traded for Luongo when they had the chance. When will GMGM finally be fired?

Well yeah…
Schultz is hte suck!!

by Sct112 on May 2, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey Charmin Crosby

Why don’t ya wait until the puck actually goes IN before ya start celebrating!
Probably cried on his way to the bench the next shift change.

God, I hate Sidney Crosby.

Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.

If I had a quarter for every time AO raised his arms on a goal that wasn’t, I could buy everyone a round.

I’ll tell you what, Crosby was awesome tonight… and the Pens still didn’t win. I’ll take that every time.

by Sct112 on May 2, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish he’d stop begging for penalties, I tell you what!

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

I want the high res photo from inside the net for my desktop. Anyone have access to the shots from the Caps?

Holy cow! Var-leeeeeeee. . . . . !

From a hundred miles away in Section 112 that sequence happened so fast looked like it dinged off a post. Holy jamoley. Miraculous.

Tho’ the Boys looked much more engaged than they did vs. the Rags, we have seen better this year. They still haven’t engaged all their gears and kept at it for an entire game.

Malkin is a bear. Massive yet quick as hell. Most entertaining.

Dude, from not nearly as far away (408), it looked like a post. Everyone was cheering “Varly” and I turned to my friend and said, “More like post-ie.” Then I saw the reply and almost spat a mouthful of MIller Lite onto the lady in front of me.

Great game. One random note: it would be nice if the linesman would chat a little before the game. One liney was letting the Pens players cheat on every draw, the other guy was throwing people out of the circle for looking at him funny. As a player, that used to drive me nuts, and you could see that it frustrated the crap out of several of the Caps’ pivots tonight.

If our 3rd line outscores theirs consistently. . . don’t wanna jinx it.

Good first game. Long ways to go.

Sorry—check out the NHL.com stats homepage. Beautiful. (Semin, Backstrom, Semin, Varlamov, Varlamov, Varlamov, Krejci, Hiller)

What catches my eye there is how Morrissonn is +6.

by RedskinFan4Life on May 3, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Which is funny, because I thought he was the worst D out there yesterday. He was caught out of position a couple of times. Erskine made up for his slow skating with a few big hits, but I thought Mo misplayed a couple of ones that could have been goals.

by Gould Old Days on May 3, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

John Carlson played as well, though I don’t know how much ice he got or how well he played.

by Rob Parker on May 2, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he got a ton of ice, but I went to the game Saturday night and thought he played pretty well. He looked like he fit right in and I didn’t even realize he was playing, having been hideously late to the game thanks to a jam on 95, until I spotted the name on the back of #4’s jersey.

Last time Varlamov let in a soft goal he followed it up with ~105 minutes of shut out hockey. I wouldn’t mind seeing that again.

by Rob Parker on May 3, 2009 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

That’s exactly what I was thinking on the metro ride home.

by zephyr on May 3, 2009 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions

The Flyers guy was absolutely right

The Penguins PP is just plain confused. They couldn’t have been any less affective.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

by jobe on May 3, 2009 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

I feel like every time we’ve played them this year their pp has been on Amber Alert.

Definitely the save of the Stanley Cup playoffs - so far!

by RedskinFan4Life on May 3, 2009 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

Luongo had a nifty save against the Blackhawks on Saturday but then he followed up on it by letting in 4 softies. I like our guy better.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
