Travesty 101 - NHL's 5 best Owners
No Leonsis? Say what?
What has Lemieux done? Smile and nodded while Bettman handed him Crosby?
Karmanos? Give me back my Whale.

The five who SI picked have all done very well, Karmanos sold the NHL in an area where it had never been, and Mario saved Pittsburgh from going out. I suspect they would have included Ted if it was a top 10. They should have listed all 30…
No argument from me on the bottom 5…although that had to be done before the Phoenix situation came up…

Have done well is a matter of perspective. Lemieux saved Pittsburgh? He was going to get his, so he and Bettman held a gun to Pittsburgh’s head with the help of the Crosby draft. Please.
As far as Karmanos, if he was selling the NHL where it never should have been, why the hell couldn’t he make it work in Hartford?
Have any of these guys shown the guts and fortitude of Leonsis, to take it in the rear from the likes of Jagr, etc., then go into rebuild mode and lose more money in an effort to ‘do it the right way’?
Russian Machine Never Breaks
Lemieux and Bettman did hold Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania hostage to get what they needed to save hockey in Pittsburgh. If you’ve ever been to the Igloo, you can understand the issue. That place is falling apart, it’s in bad shape, and there are thousands of seats in the place where you can’t see all of the action (because it’s below you!) It was barely adequate for the NHL when the Penguins came into the league, and it is adequate now. If Lemieux hadn’t done what he did, the Pens would probably be in Portland, OR or Kansas City.
As for Karmanos, he had the same problem with Connecticut that Mario had with Pa. Only in his case Connecticut wouldn’t budge and so he was forced to relocate the team somewhere. That he is making it work in the Research Triangle is admirable and it is now a healthy market…
