One More Injury Revealed: Jeff Schultz's Broken Rib
We've read and heard a lot today about the guys who toughed it out and played through the pain over the past couple of weeks: Alex Ovechkin leading the series in scoring despite groin and wrist injuries, John Erskine and Tom Poti each playing with broken foot and still blocking shots, Alex Semin - normally a wizard with the puck - playing with a damaged thumb, Mike Green playing big minutes with a bad shoulder, and Shaone Morrisonn hobbled by groin and ankle injuries.
But what about one of the guys - Jeff Schultz - who couldn't make a go of it and saw his playoffs cut short by what ended up being a season-ending injury? It turns out (per Caps PR) that Sarge had broken a rib, an injury that occurred before, well, this did in Game 1 of the Rangers series:
Does the injury excuse Schultz's misplay? Hardly. But it certainly might help to explain his tumble to the ice that followed it - and why we didn't see him again for the duration of the post-season.
Get well soon, everyone - there's work to be done.

It seemed to me like he had just fallen off the face of the earth…no one talked about him.
Its too bad…he really could have helped us in the Pittsburgh series

I knew it! ;-)
It certainly looks like he couldn’t turn towards the center of the ice watching that video now.
My take has always been that the error was that he overplayed the outside. The fall was irrelevant to the result in that at that point he really couldn’t have influenced the play beyond a trip or hook from behind if anything which would be bad, but still based on the positioning error.
But with the injury deal, I would offer it only was a factor if it specifically was the reason he pivoted to the outside early – either because some intermediate position hurt or he was protecting himself from a hit to the side he shifted away from the attacker.
blah blah…
Mo’s contract is up and he went to arbitration last summer and got $1.75 million so I think he is out. Schultz and Jurcina are also restricted free agents. According to nhlnumbers, Schultz made $650,000 and Jurcina made $912,000 this season. I think both will be back as the Caps need decent, but cheap, players to balance out the more expensive ones. The playoffs reinforced my hope that a new defensive coach comes in. Schultz has been taught by the same defensive coach who was here under Hanlon. I sometimes wonder if Schultz would be better if there was a different person responsible for the defense.
A Broken Rib...
…I’ve had a few playing catcher in little league and rec league softball. Every breath hurts, and it’s tough to sleep as when you roll over on your side with the injury, you wake up immediately in pain…
Now, imaging you’re a hockey player, sprinting up and down the ice, at the end of your shift you’re breathing hard….ow!
Let's go Caps!
Recap
2 –- healthy but rusty?
3 –- broken foot and bad groin
4 - broken foot healthy? And a hittin’ machine
23 –
26 — groin and ankle
27 — mystery ailment
52 — bad shoulder
55 — broken rib
SHEESH.
Don’t forget #74 John Carlson. He did extremely well in London this season and could be ready to take one of the D spots next season.
I used to feel that way, but everyone in Hershey keeps saying that he’s ready now. Hell, he almost made the Caps out of the last training camp.

So bizarre: In his ‘injuries roundup’ story today, TEB totally, completely leaves out 55. (!?!?!?!?!)
Yay Rink.
He did mention Fehr having a presumable shoulder separation/dislocation, though not saying those words.

Why would he mention him? He was only third among the team’s D in ice time this season, second in plus-minus and assists and legitimately could have made a difference in the Pens series.

TEB also got the salary cap rules wrong in an embarrassing way (a subject for a fanpost I’m writing that I don’t know when I’ll finish). Seriously, if I got paid to cover the Caps full time…

Maybe TEB hadn’t mentioned Schultz since his injury in the Rangers series was comparatively old news.
Still, no matter how we slice it, our only healthy defensemen during the Pens series, were Pothier and Jurcina. If we don’t count Alzner and Sloan, we had 5, yes count them 5, defensemen hurt. Morrisonn, Green, Schultz, Poti, and Erskine. That’s 5 out of 7. No wonder our D looked less than wonderful. Yes, I know most people are injured come playoff time but I certainly don’t remember this many guys being injured last year. I know Morrisonn was hurt and had his jaw wired shut and could not eat solid food last year but I sure don’t remember the injury situation being this bad.
I’m not even counting Alzner. I’m presuming he got his concussion after being returned to Hershey after being sent back down during the playoffs.
No, it’s still around in the sidebar.
