Anaheim-Detroit/Boston-Carolina Thread
Just thought I'd throw something up so we could discuss the games tonight. I don't know about you guys, but I can't just quit hockey cold turkey. I need some methadone.
(Apparently, this needs to be 75 words. I can't believe that I'm actually having a hard time making the minimum word limit. Hmmm.)
I don't know about you folks, but personally, I'm rooting for Detroit and Boston. I think a Detroit-Chicago conference final would be amazing.

So whoever wins this game has to beat the Pens. DET is DET and all of them are fast and can control the puck. ANA has a great D corps, a dominant line, and you know Corey Perry will not allow Gonchar to finish the series.

Oh, and great call with the thread.

I have to credit Datsyuk. He made a couple of amazing plays on the 5-3 PK and I had to say something about it. It was too amazing. He rushed the puck down the ice one-on-two, got decked, then skated his ass off all the way back down to create a turnover in the corner in his own end. Holy crap he’s good.

Indeed. Well done, D’oh.

Yeah, I think the Caps could use a player like him, or Getzlaf. Wait a minute, didn’t we draft someone right in front of Getzlaf in 2003? What was his name again???
Seriously, what do you think happened to your boy? I was surprised we never saw him again.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Man, Franzen’s dive on the Getzlaf slashing penalty was pretty atrocious. That wasn’t quite Italian Serie A-level acting, but it was getting close.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 7:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s natural selection. If ANA faces PIT with that weak cheap shit they’ll be SH the whole time.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Any recollection what the penalties in the PHI-PIT series were like? I don’t recall it being quite as imbalanced as our series.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure PHI had more puck possession than we did and there were definitely a couple games where the Pens got sucked in and took a bunch of penalties so It’s probably a little more balanced.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, no offense intended but Philly I thought controlled the puck more against the Penguins even though Malkin commented that the Caps were a much better team. Which is weird but true. Plus, we all know the Flyers play a very physical game and often instigated post-whistle scrums and drew some retaliations too that the Caps didn’t do to the Pens.
by Hooks Orpik on May 14, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Carolina/Pens would be amazing hockey. If the NHL could figure out how to market the game this would be gold.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Did you hear the Penguins and Hurricanes each have a tall, blond haired center that look like each other and have the same last name?
Yeah, well we’re about to hear that even more ad nausem for the next 10-14 days if Carolina holds their 2-1 lead for 20 more minutes.
by Hooks Orpik on May 14, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ugh. Give me Chara v. Crosby.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow. Good thing they got that Getzlaf slash. Gotta get that out of the game.

Whoa, what happened in Det? I’m watching the B’s.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 8:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Pronger pulled some ridiculous takedown on Hossa, no call.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How’d they get the 2nd goal? Was there another PP?
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No PP. Helm busted up the middle with speed and scored on a breakaway.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s depth. Darren Helm and Dan Cleary.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup. Everyone on that team can play.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How appropriate that the team from Detroit is a well-oiled machine.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And how appropriate that the team from DC is characterized by inconsistent effort.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Would you rather go out like the Caps or like the Ducks? It would suck to lose like that.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh, much rather be our way. It made it obvious this team wasn’t ready and there was no last minute heartbreak.
by Ovechwin on May 14, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd prefer our way from a fans perspective.
but I think our guys would have preferred to go out fighting to the last minutes.
by Ovechwin on May 14, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Aw.
The Ducks are my next-favorite team. Bad week for me.

The Hershey Rule
The game’s not over yet, but Carolina is in the lead. Let’s apply the Hershey rule and this means Boston will lose, having both farm teams of the eliminated Eastern Conference Semis facing off. Bears play the Providence Bruins starting this Saturday.
Of course, it doesn’t perfectly work out or else we would have moved on if the Bears and Caps were truly mirrored this post-season.
by chockster on May 14, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wish the Caps had Savard. That’s how to spend 5M per year for a center.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

He used to have a rep as a locker-room cancer and a guy who wouldn’t play defense. Not sure that lockerroom rep was deserved, but he has really upped his defensive game.

Are you as high on Cammalleri as some others? I haven’t seen him play enough.
You can't reason someone out of something they weren't reasoned into.
by ChrisAm on May 14, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like him a lot, but I haven’t seen him play as much these last few years since I’ve moved back east.
Pros: shifty, truly skilled (not just puck-lucky), good skater, good vision, has played in Bruce’s system before in Manchester, still young.
Cons: Small, has been injury prone, not really a true center – more of a wing, might be too rich for our blood.
If we really want a disher-type #2 C, he’s not the guy. If we think that he’ll have chemistry with Semin, and we’re less concerned about defensive coverage and faceoffs, he could be pretty good.
The problem is, there aren’t any really good, young-ish true two-way centermen on the market. Higgins, Cammalleri and Tanguay can all play C, but none of them are “true” C’s. They’re all guys who have played C in the past, but have spent most of their careers as wings.

Here’s a good listing of all the UFA’s this summer. There are a lot of big-name guys, but not many of them are on the right side of 35.
If the team is willing to take a (fairly big) risk, I wouldn’t mind seeing them sign Steve Sullivan. His injuries will make him cheap, and he might be willing to take a shorter deal to prove that he’s healthy again.

how about Franzen? i know, i’m dreaming….
Peca looks good (altho’ a bit old, but his playoff experience with Buffalo could be helpful for that bridge to our team in two years), Antropov from the Rangers is a hard working one — you’d get that physicality on the line that’s needed.
by RedskinFan4Life on May 14, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, you’re dreaming. Peca is washed up and has never been the same since Darcy Tucker destroyed his knee. At this point, he’s a older, slower, more expensive version of Boyd Gordon.
I think you’re the first person who has ever put the word Antropov and “hard-working” in the same sentence.
:)
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
sure worked hard for those goals against us in the 1st round
by RedskinFan4Life on May 14, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was invisible for the most of that series. He got open space at the top of the circle on the PP and sniped a corner and then he was left open in the low slot and got a loose puck.
by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that’s slightly akin to watching game 5 from the last series and determining that Matt Bradley must be a 50-goal scorer.
If we’re looking for tough, gritty, max-effort guys, Antropov should be in between Alexei Yashin and Oleg Kvasha at the bottom of the list.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My GOD. That would be the softest line EVER.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Still, I bet Milbury gets a semi thinking about that line.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
okay, i guess i didn’t see enough
i’ll keep dreaming and hope we get Franzen
by RedskinFan4Life on May 14, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s cool. I used to be forced to watch the Leafs all the time on HNIC. Antropov is a very talented, very large disappointment.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sadly, I think Antropov might be one of the best available options. That’s how thin this group is.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
wow didn’t realize Tim Thomas was that old and that cheap. Bruins got great value for their money…..
by RedskinFan4Life on May 14, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s not really that cheap. He signed an extension for about $5-6m/year. That salary is what he’s making this year.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if the extension, why on the UFA list? that list a little behind?
by RedskinFan4Life on May 14, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah. He signed that extension late in the season. Otherwise, it seems pretty accurate.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m kinda fine with the picks we made before that though.

OT
Overtime hockey is so much more fun to watch when it’s not my team playing.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Which is why I’d rather go out in the second period.

Call me a masochist, but I didn’t mind it.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was easier to take having the end be so uncompetitive.
by Ovechwin on May 14, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know this sounds nuts, but I think Keith Jones had it exactly right on Versus: it’s a pride thing.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure for the players it was harder to take, but for me, being who I am, it was easier.
by Ovechwin on May 14, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mark Recchi is amazing. He looked so washed up a few years ago with Pittsburgh and Atlanta, but he has been pretty damn good in these playoffs.

I’m not sure the Caps could have hung with either of these teams.
You can't reason someone out of something they weren't reasoned into.
by ChrisAm on May 14, 2009 11:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely not the B’s. I’m not sure the Canes would have been able to screw down hard enough defensively.
With the ersatz versions of Green and Semin we had toward the end of that series, I’m not sure we could have hung with anyone left in the playoffs, though.
by D'ohboy on May 14, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, look at that, someone lost their stick on a slash . . . AND THE REFS DIDN’T BLOW THEIR WHISTLES. Shocking.

Krejci is even better than I realized. He can puckhandle in a phonebooth filled with greased pigs.

by Fehr and Balanced on May 14, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You know what though? I’d take him on the Caps. The same way that I’d take Hartnell.
Teams need guys like that. WE NEED GUYS LIKE THAT. D-bag or no.

Or Justin Taylor.
I also think Bourque could fill this role. He’s a ballsy little bastard. And much stronger than his size would suggest.

I’d rather lose the Caps way I think.

Bruins fans throwing things on the ice. Think people will quit giving our fans crap for that eventually?
I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I think it’s not a commentary on the competence of our fan base.
