Love the enthusiasm
…didn’t love the effort in the defensive zone tonight from Ovie though. A little too casual on the back-check all night.
by DonnieKnutts on May 11, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
3/4 of the forwards were too casual on the back check. Baks is working his tail off and as is the 3rd line, but everyone else was pretty weak. Same as the whole series. Man when Pens have gotten the puck deep in this series they set up camp. Forwards don’t support and tonight D-men’s passes and clearing attempts were downright atrocious. They were gripping their sticks way too hard. Poti looked wretched.
However, as has happened all series, the caps skill and determination when down continues to keep them around.

I really, really, really, really wish they would play a tight point. I hate seeing all the goddamn keep ins and extra shots from the point.
by DrinkingPartner on May 11, 2009 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m tired of seeing forwards skating out of the defensive zones, back to the puck held by our defense, passing right by the Penguin players that hold the puck in. You guys think that maybe you could help your defense out a little? If not help them control the puck against pressure, at least give them a viable pass option?

These Caps don’t know any other way to live (or die) in the playoffs. Game 7 in DC, act 3.
3 game 7s in two years – crazy being a Caps fan! How many teams have had that many close series in a row?
In 2002
the Avalanche had three straight series go to seven games. By the third one, they were absolutely pooped, 7-0 Detroit final.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

i swear to the hockey gods, one more overtime game and this caps fan is going to have a coronary
I almost turned it off, seriously
The thought of losing in OT… oh man. I felt like I was 9 years old again. The familiar “Caps” postseason feeling. It was intense, it was painful, it was nerve-racking. And then joyous.

As I said in the last post
As overjoyed as I am, I’m STILL fuming about the last interference minor in regulation. I’m not one for conspiracy theories or blaming the refs BUT that call was atrocious and I think we’d have the right to be up in arms had the Pens scored on the ensuing PP. It could’ve literally cost us the series.
Anyway… back to the CELEBRATION!!!!!

As much as I love the Caps, I have to give it to the Penguins. I wouldn’t enjoy this as much against a lesser team. Beating them will be more enjoyable and should by some ignoble twist of hockey god whim, it would be honorable.
I hate Pittsburgh. And the Pens too.

What tonight’s game really proves is that we were right in that games 3 and 5 really were just lucky wins for the Pens. We got the break tonight. We’re evenly matched even more than we probably still think. And I am goddamn proud of my team.

I think tonight proves that despite the Caps being out of the game in every stat except hits and saves they can somehow manage to find a way to win.
Game 7 they have to play wayyyyyy better than they did toinght.
We’ve been in every game. And so have they.
They’ve outscored us by one goal through six games.
We’ve had one two-goal lead. They’ve had three (all in Game 4). It doesn’t get much tighter – on the scoreboard, at least – than this one has.
L’il Gary is oh-so pleased.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not sure I agree with this – the Pens controlled the play a lot of the time again tonight – but the two teams are unquestionably evenly matched. I am proud of them too.
Also, as an aside, Fleury’s gawd-awfulness has kind of gotten overlooked, IMO.
Fleury has been horrid. Just horrid. It’s why I’ve kept pointing to him as reason for hope.

Almost as much of a joke as Schultz’s listed weight.
I’m 170lbs and I might be heavier than Schultz.
I think Semin’s the most ridiculous one on the team. He’s listed at ~205 and I wouldn’t be shocked if he didn’t even hit 180.
I’m still going with the weighing with their equipment thing on.
Then there’s the case of Backstrom who was listed at 200 last year, showed up to camp 20 pounds overweight, and was listed at 183 this year. Hmmm….
I remember in college, I listed myself at 175, which was “optimistic,” then I spent much of the year on the bench, only leaving it to “goon it up.” So I started lifting a lot of weights. Got up to 205. Then, the weight was “optimistic” in the other direction.
Backis needs to lose his baby fat.
Whenever I’m watching/talking about hockey with people who aren’t familiar with it and they comment on how big players are based on listed height and weights I tell them, “yeah but if I were a professional hockey player they’d call me 6’1’’, 190”, and I’m 5’11’’, 175.
The biggest liar on the Caps is Schultz. I’ve seen him in street clothes. He’s 6’6" and maybe, just maybe 200. Just maybe.
I still say Semin. I saw a picture of him without a shirt on once, he looked slightly more muscular than my younger brother, who’s 6’1’’, 155.
But I always thought the Capitals were pretty blatant with their exaggerations. Take Mike Green, for example. Dude’s listed at 6’2’’ and he has maybe an inch and a half on me.
haha no way is green 6’2". I was surprised by how not-tall he was when I met him (see comment below about me being freakishly tall for context).
I have a hard time judging heights above mine. To me, you’re all big. That being said, I’ve seen Potsy in person, and he’s a legit 5-11/6ft. Green isn’t much bigger. I bet he’s 6-1.
I once dated a girl who was 5’11", she showed up at my house while I was breaking in my skates, and therefore wearing them around the house.
She was taller barefoot than I was in my skates. :(
i’m siding with DMG. semin appears at 2:50 of this youtube profile of backstrom (found here on japers’ rink about a year ago) and it’s mind boggling how tiny he is for a hockey player.
by Natty Bumppo on May 11, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I dunno. He’s a big guy. I’m 6’7" and when I was skinny once upon a time (and not muscular) I was still over 200. Mind you, I wasn’t in pro athlete shape by any stretch, but I can believe he’s 222.
Besides, he’s a hockey player – it’s all in the legs.
6 games played. 5 within 1 goal. 3 games go to OT. 2 hat tricks… 1 game #7 yet to be played. Welcome to the circus indeed.

I know. The Hawks have been awful for a long time, a proud fanchise done wrong by a terrible owner (I can think of a local team that that might be)…

versus badly needs a nightly hockey show. if ESPN2 could do it back in the day, then so can versus, which supposedly was going to “treat hockey fans like they deserve to be treated” or whatever BS bettman and the owners were spewing. a REAL hockey highlight show would be SO GREAT right now.

Ok, I know that Versus has been using “First Breath After Coma” by Explosions in the Sky for its commercials, but all day today, I had This Will Destroy You’s “The World is Our” in my head. Great song, worth a listen at their MySpace. Starts out slow, but ends up like a harder version of U2’s “Bad” without Bono’s preening.

and there were NBA playoff games tonight. I’m impressed.

Can someone please tell me why the ref’s think that they can decide a games outcome in the last 2 minutes of a game 6? This seriously has to be addressed. The caps are taking some really bad penalties but come on. I don’t know what the actual count is but I think it is 30 power plays for them to are 14 or so. Either swallow the whistle or call it both ways!
