"Stefan Della Rovere's stint in the ECHL didn't last long.
"After signing with the Washington Capitals last week, the Barrie Colts captain joined the Capitals' ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, where he recorded an assist in two games with the team.
"Della Rovere has since joined the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' AHL affiliate, where he's expected to play for the team's final three regular-season games."

I don’t, no.
He’s got a ways to go, and the Caps don’t exactly rush guys (see Bourque, Christopher). He may get here a little quicker than otherwise if he can fill a role that the Caps are needing, but I can’t see him here as a regular with only one year in the AHL.

Bradley and Erskine are both here through 2010/11, so the scrappy need isn’t immediate. However, its also the season Semin and Backstrom come due for new contracts so the caps might have to fill in some low salary guys on the bottom lines (which I assume SDR is).
Probably up to him and his development more than anything.
I think it’s safe to assume the Caps will initiate talks for an extension with Backs immedately after July 1 this year, no? That, is, as early as possible?

Maybe, maybe not. They can tender him and keeps his rights no matter what, and waiting might be a better negotiating technique.
That said, I’m sure they’re already thinking about what it make take to sign him and how they would be able to lock him up long term.
With 2010-11 looking like cap hell, wouldn’t you think they’d either want to wait to see what the handcuffs will look like or else adjust a proposed contract downward and for a shorter term as a hedge?
I agree with this point. The cap is not as much of an unknown for next year, but the year after it is completely up in the air. They will wait unless they can get him locked up for what they believe is a bargain. I would not be surprised to see deals for Semin/Backstrom similar to what Detroit is doing. Long term at below average salaries for their ability but I do not want to see that. I fear the injury or drop in production and getting locked into a bad longterm contract. For OV I can handle that. For Backstrom I would be comfortable. Not sure about Semin and he is my fav on the team.
