4/7/09: Recap and Tomorrow's game (can't say it matters)
Today's games (involving Eastern Conference teams):
- Caps 4 - Thrashers 2: Caps win! Devils Lose! Caps magic number stands at 1.
- Leafs 4 - NJD 1: Way to get it done, fellas. Thanks a bunch. Devils MN for the division is 1 (Flyers)...(despite what my playoff tracker says)
- Rangers 3 - Canadiens 1: Despite the loss, Canadiens are 1 point away from the playoffs. The Rangers are 1 point out of the 7 seed, but the Canadiens are currently the holder of the tiebreak (more head to head points, same number of wins). Rangers clinch the playoffs with another win, or 3 points won/lost by the Panthers.
- Pens 6 - 'Ning 4: I think most of us are rooting for the Pens to get to the 5th seed, and the Flyers to get the 4th seed. Carolina currently holds the tiebreak and are up by 2 points. Either way, it's going to be very difficult for the Caps to play them in the first round. Pens would have to lose both, Montreal win both.
- Flyers 2 - Panthers 1: The Flyers retain hold on the 4 seed with a game in hand on the Canes. Note that if they end the season tied, the Canes would hold the wins tiebreaker.
- Canes 9 - Islanders 0:
Pretty good effort tonight, Islanders. Brendan, we could have been great together. The Canes need 1 win to prevent Pitt from passing them (so let's hope they lose both remaining games). - Senators 3 - Bruins 2: Nothing to add here.
Tomorrow's games (involving Eastern Conference teams):
- Sabres @ Leafs: The Sabres tragic number is 1 (Rangers).
You can find an updated Playoff Tracker here (this is yesterday's). Note that in the tracker, I don't account for tiebreakers but I've added a little table to help compare total wins and head to head points earned.
Best case Scenario for tomorrow:
Poti gets healthy.

Did anyone watch the end of the Penguins game? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such bad refs. As seen here, TEB’s site and elsewhere, I’m generally a zebra supporter and give them the benefit of the doubt more times than not. HOWEVER, there was a blatant goalie interference missed on a goal by the Guins…followed by two (2) hits that were definitely 2 minute boardings…one of them a borderline fiver.
The missed interference call put the Guins up by 2 late in the 3rd. Inexcusable. It was the first time that I have seriously considered that the refs might be pulling for a team to win.
/I’m not going to put a tin foil hat on, but I still can’t believe the calls (or lack there of)
//After watching him this season I have two things to say about Matt Cooke — 1) I’m glad he’s not a Cap and 2) IMO he’s no better than Sean Avery
Personally, I have no problem with a Carolina/Philly 4/5 matchup. I think the Canes have a very, very good chance of winning that series and getting beat up in the process. The winner of that series looks like (furiously knocking on wood) the potential round 2 opponent to me, as NJD looks ripe for the picking right now by either Carolina or Pitt. Who woulda thunk it a few weeks ago?
If that’s true, then I’m rooting for New Jersey in the playoffs, because given a choice between Carolina/Philly and New Jersey, I’ll take New Jersey.

This one is headed for the “be careful what you wish for” file. Once Brodeur straightens things out (as they were plenty straight three weeks ago), I’m not sure that’s a team you’d want to face. I’d take Philly or Carolina over a Devils team on a roll, I think.
But that’s too far down the road to think about. Too much can happen between now and then, including an early playoff exit for the boys in red.

The key to that statement is “on a roll.” I don’t want to play any team that is on a roll. All of the playoff teams have enough talent to be dangerous if they are hot. Sadly, whoever we play in the second round (knock on wood) is probably going to be on a roll by virtue of winning a playoff series. Hopefully whoever we face is coming out of a brutally physical and long series. Other than that wish, I’m not going to start trying to pick my poison.
