Game Day Open Thread - Thrashers @ Capitals
Winnipeg Jets at Washington Capitals, Apr 5, 2009 3:00 PM EDT
Today's probable netminders:
Today's referees (with the Caps' record in games they've called in parens):
6 - Dan Marouelli (1-4 in 2008-09; 3-10 over the previous three seasons)
26 - Rob Martel (3-0 in 2008-09; 8-8 over the previous three seasons)
Have at it, people.

When’s blog poster appreciation day?
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Is it actually working for anyone? It just sits and loads and never gets there for me.

Must win today
I want no part of Pittsburgh or Carolina in the first round.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

yeah, that does increase the degree of difficulty. ;)

Jackson, Mississippi. The general culture is a lot more congenial for me than that of my hometown – Bethesda – but I do miss the smallmouth and the Capitals.
I’m from Bethesda too – and I know what you mean. Thanks for the new link!

for those who missed it
2 nasty hits by OV at the end of the period, one a boarderline interference and the other just a smackdown of Marty Reasoner behind the net. A textbook check, I might add, and Hainsey the victim of hit number one takes a run at 8 and draws a minor.

Atlanta announcers are crying
About AO’s hits. Direct quote:
“Yes, it was legal, yes, it was clean. But it was dirty because it was only intended to put a licking on Marty Reasoner, not to get the puck.”
LOL. Smokin Al has competition…
In other words, just like many of the hits that other teams take on #8?

That’s flexibility that would make a gymnast jealous.

The Atlanta announcers are idiots and blatantly pander to the fan base. I once, in fact, wrote about it.
Never thought I’d be enthused by a tie game against the Thrash.
And their announcers definitely are complete morons.

No really. Everyting is going to be just fine in ten days when the playoffs start.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
I’d put a lot more stock in the fact that the Capitals have beaten good teams consistently all year, that how a team finishes the season doesn’t seem to affect their postseason performance, and that most of the league’s best teams have been more or less slumping or inconsistent at the season’s end than how the Capitals have played.
Basically, I don’t see any reason to assume they’re not going to be fine come playoff time.
Thanks. I wish that calmed my stomach. :)

That argument is starting to make the “WMD Motive” sound viable. Sorry, you can justify away, but there is nothing that surpasses the eye test. You can look at a team’s record and that doesn’t tell you everything about how they are playing.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
I’m not saying they’re playing well on a whole but I am saying that they’ve played well against playoff teams and rivals – basically when they’re able to “get up” for games. The Caps had the division all but locked down early this year and it’s only human nature that they’re going to have difficulty being as motivated for games like this one. It sucks to watch and it’s frustrating, but the team is still good when they get going and I have no doubt they’ll come ready to play in the postseason.
So playing 6 games for the #2 seed wasn’t something worth getting up for? Bad habits die hard.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
Playing your 79th game in six months is hard to do.
But even if you argue the Capitals should have come out with more energy today, how is that relevant to the playoffs? Do you really think they’re not going to be motivated in the playoffs or that they’re going to be a bad team even if they are motivated?
It’s clearly not a talent situation. Of course they are going to be motivated in the playoffs, but as I said: bad habits. I have just seen too many teams cruise like this and never get it back. Other teams are going to be motivated too, and they aren’t going to fold like the Thrashers are in the process of doing. Three goals in 8+ minutes since my motivational speech, btw. ;-)
Russian Machine Never Breaks
How they are playing now is how they are playing now. It’s not how they were playing in December or how they will be playing in the playoffs. Past performance is no guarnatee of future results — in either direction.
by CapitalCentre on Apr 5, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
How they are playing April 5 is a heck of a lot more relevant than how they were playing in December.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
The fallacy in that is looking at only one variable, the date. It doesn’t consider scheduling, quality of opponent, standings, etc, etc, etc. I think Pepper demonstrated pretty convincingly in a recent post that finishing strong versus finishing poorly doesn’t have much of an impact on playoff success, so even using that one variable doesn’t mean much.
For weeks I’ve not been too concerned with them mailing it in especially with their schedule consisting of bottom feeders lately. However, its “go” time now. 2nd place in East is on the line and the playoffs are just around the corner. Giving up shorties and going down 5 on 3 for what seems like the 1000th time this season are not signs of focus.
Now that’s the kind of goal I like to see — crashing the net. SWEET STUFF for Fehr, great play by Laich too.
Yes. Not only to I like gritty goals, turns out it’s good hockey too!

That would be his second in like 4 games…of course some people think we need Jay Beagle instead. :→
Russian Machine Never Breaks
Not exactly so… Some think playing Aucoin and Beagle would be a nice replacement for Nylander and Brash to solve both the physical and scoring issues of late. One is a little energy fireplug and the other is tough, while both can actually contribute offensively. I tend to agree.
Laich empty netter for #20?

Admit it, had he scored, it would have been awesome. It’s funny because if it didn’t cost us the game, but if it had, I’d have been furious.

just what in the hell was he thinking there…Locker cannot be serious about Theo going net on the clear. If he was BB, is going to get after his ass on that
from the house that Red Jesus built
I’ll second that. I was at the game today, and there were fans next to me saying, “Who is that number 20 again?!!” It’s just good to see someone playing with passion and lead by example left and right. He seems to be having the time of his life even to be in the lineup—which most of the team has not shown as of late. If they take him out come playoff time, I will be much displeased
I just got home from the game. Man it was a great one even though it was filled with poor hockey.
1. Aucoin was beast.
2. Laich was beast.
3. I laiched how everyone was trying to feed Ovi all night.
4. Nice try for the goal Theo but maybe you should practice your shot a little bit more because that was terrible.
5. Secondary scoring, alright!
Yeah I was pretty embarrassed for Theo. I also thought Flash had one of his better games in a while, and I think Ovie needs a new stick/blade, etc. I think I’ve seen him break a stick 1,345,895 times this year and change a stick possibly 1,233,003 times as well. Don’t quote me on those numbers, but they seem about accurate. Other than that, great game.
Hard Hat
I hear Nylander got the hard hat for today. Even though I thought it should have gone to Aucoin. Aucoin has earned his way into the lineup, in my opinion. A true sign of that is that he was in Boudreau’s PP unit at least twice. (After that shortie, it was time to reorganized the PP unit.). Interesting line shuffle but it needed to be done.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. I did a double take to make sure it was actually him after the puck went in and that he was happy\celebrating.
I think Nylander definitely loves being in town, and he loves the city and the team, and his teammates. I’m also sure he’s damn happy when he contributes, and knows he’s slumping, and hates it. I bet he doesn’t hate his contract. Funny, I think most of us agree on everything but his contract.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
I’m hoping that Nylander’s goal is step one in jamming the square peg in the round hole. Caps sure could use Nyles producing.
