Ovechkin, Countrymen Hart Trophy Finalists
"Will Washington Capitals left winger Alexander Ovechkin, the top goal scorer in the NHL again this season, repeat as the winner of the Hart Trophy? Or will the title of most valuable player go to Art Ross Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins or Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk?"- NHL.com

I don’t think its his. The hot stick incident will piss off too many old time hockey folks.
BUT
I’d rather him win the Conn Smythe then the Hart.
The votings already done… These three are top three vote getters, which should surprise no one.
Let's go Caps!

this comment is confusing on so many levels.

all three russians, and AO has already won the player-voted “russian MVP” award.

I don’t think the “hot stick” will be the reason he might not get the Hart Trophy. It might be the fact that the Pens looked dead a month and a half before the playoffs after going to the finals last year. Then Gonchar comes back and a new coach make “Geno” look better.
OV almost beat Malkin with points and was way ahead in goals but for some reason I don’t OV will get it. Datsyuk is just a filler.
That’s the thing about Geno, though. Ovechkin performed all season long but for the first week (7-10 games, I mean) of the season. Malkin didn’t suffer anywhere near that kind of slump, and Ovechkin came as close as he did, and led his team to the record they had. I think Ovie has it.

plus AO’s PPG were better. combine that with 20+ more goals, ~230 more SOG, ~160 more hits….
and a lot of the stories down the stretch about pittsburgh seemed to focus on either crosby or bylsma, not malkin.

It comes down to...
…who the writers thought was more valuable to their team this year. How would the Caps have done without Ovie? I don’t want to find out, but I think they still were a playoff team (Backstrom, Green and Semin aren’t chopped liver ya know…)
The Pens, on the other hand, go with Malkin. If he’s not there, I doubt they make the playoffs this year. Then again, they almost didn’t until Blysma got there and righted the ship. Blysma’s system may be the ideal system for Malkin (although I’d love to see him playing in Boudreau’s system…yikes!)
I think this year, Malkin wins it. Sacriledge, I know, but he is more valuable to the Pens than Ovie is to the Caps.
Let's go Caps!
Just imagine what the Rags would have done, though, if they didn’t have to worry about Ovechkin? The entire defensive philosophy is likely altered, because, at that point, they have Semin and Green to worry about, both of whom aren’t the prolific shooters that Alex is.

I guarantee you the Rags don’t play “everyone-get-the-fuck-back-in-the-zone-as-quickly-as-humanly-possible” against the Caps if Ovie’s not with them.

Have they nominated the Adams candidates, yet?

Nah. I don’t see Bruce getting it this year. Yeah. he did a pretty good job, but doesn’t it usually take surprises and turnarounds to win this award? If you go that way, I give this award to Andy Murray.

FYI, here are the players who have won the Hart Trophy more than once in NHL history. All but one is in the HOF and the one who isn’t will be: Dominik Hasek.
Nels Stewart, Howie Morenz, Eddie Shore, Bill Cowley, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Clarke, Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux, and Hasek.
Nice list.
and the list of players that have won back-to-back is shortened to:
Howie Morenz, Eddie Shore, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky and Hasek.

Not Malkin
While there is much talk about numbers, no one is addressing the the most valuable PLAYER aspect. In reading article after article about Ovie you hear the same thing: he is dynamic on the ice and lifts his team with his enthusiasm. This is almost as valuable as scoring, but Ovie does that as well. He was less than five points behind Malkin, and he brings so much more to his team (including money, it’s not just winning that has brought people to the phone booth), and a number of hockey journalists have noted this. Malkin is a great player, but his impression on the media is not one of over-whelming necessity to his team, particularly given the idea that Crosby is the “star” and leader.
I hate Pittsburgh. And the Pens too.
Mirtle picks AO by a healthy margin. He’s got his finger on the pulse of the media more than any of us do. I trust his judgment until he is proven wrong.
Ovie is going to win this thing by a lot. The hot stick thing may turn off a few, but I think Caps fans actually have a tendency to underrate Ovie against the field compared to outside observers (the same is true of Green, BTW).
Malkin and Datsyuk are both great players, though. This has to be the greatest year for Russia in the NHL, no? All 3 Hart finalists as well as the Ross and Richard winners. And their unofficial team is riding a wave in the playoffs thanks to Varlamov’s play and Fedorov’s GWG.
