Okay. series is over and exam is this morning. One comment before I go off to face my fate -
I can hear the media fapping from here over the Crosby/Ovi matchup. And don’t forget, we are the underdogs in this series. Hopefully that’s a motivator for the boys.

I'll Rec this one for the ELP reference...
One of my other passions: Emerson, Lake and Palmer…
The line actually is:
“Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends. We’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.”
One of the great All-time rock and roll songs, “Karn Eval 9” of of the “Brain Salad Surgery” album… great stuff.
Let's go Caps!

Come forth, from love’s spire
Born in life’s fire,
Born in life’s fire.
Come forth, from love’s spire
In the burning, all are [of our] yearning,
for life to be.
And in pain there will [must] be gain,
New Life!
Stirring in, salty streams
And dark hidden seams
Where the fossil sun gleams.
They were, sent from [to] the gates
Ride the tides of fate
Ride the tides of fate.
They were, sent from [to] the gates,
In the burning all are [of our] yearning,
For life to be.
There’s no end to my life,
No beginning to my death:
Death is life.

Matt Cooke will provide all the clown we need this series.

You really hate Cooke don’t you J.P.?
I didn’t think that he was around long enough to develop those sorts of feelings.
I just don’t have a tremendous amount of respect for how he plays the game, and that impression was formed before he was a Cap. Every shift is a checking-from-behind waiting to happen, and when the bell rings, he never answers it (unlike Avery, who at least used to).

Yeah, but God damn it, I wish that bastard was wearing RWB going into the series as opposed to Black and Gold. The only way Cooke is going to get taken out of this series is via suspension or injury, I don’t think we can contain him, and I don’t think the league knows what the Hell they’re doing when it comes to suspensions. I’m scared to death of Cooke in this series.

He’s not even in the top 10 guys I’m scared of. In no particular order, Crosby, Malkin, Kunitz, Fleury, Gonchar, Guerin, Sykora, Staal… ok, maybe he squeaks into the top 10.

I’m not scared of Cooke for his offense. I’m scared of him because frankly, if Avery can do what he did to us, Cooke is in a similar mold. Avery was that good in the series because we let him be. Also, I’m terrified of Cooke hurting Green on a Board. If I had to rank the 10 guys who scare me, it’s Malkin, Cooke, Guerin, Kunitz, Gonchar, Kennedy, Talbot, Sykora, Crosby

Dude, take a breath. The Caps are big boys. If he really starts doing something that’s going to cause some harm someone will step up and render him useless.
I mean look back, what did Avery really do instigator-wise? I thought the Caps did an amazing job just ignoring him…I have faith that they can do that just as well on Avery Jr.
I’m not angry or spouting off just to spout – I’m just trying to offer something contrary to what most people think. I dunno why people mistake my comments for being out of control or something. I have faith, but I’m not even referring to what Avery did “instigator” wise. I’m referring to how he always seemed to have skating room, always seemed to be able to get a shot off, little things. They took the skill players out easily, but the grinders, and specifically, Antropov/Avery/Callahan, I think, was a line that, well, turned on Avery’s shoulders, and Cooke seems that kind of player. I see a line like Cooke – Staal – Talbot doing real damage if we don’t learn how to contain grinders.

I didn’t think your comments were angry or out of control…don’t know what gave that impression. I think they are usually quite good. I was just saying “take a breath” because you were saying you are so scared.
I get it now, I’m tired and having a stressful week, with exams and all. No problems :3

Avery was “that good?” When and at what?
Avery was very good in Game 7. But he was one of our best players prior to his benching and was completely neutered in Game 6. If Cooke plays similarly, I’ll be thrilled.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Avery was good in game 7 until he started doing everything he could to draw a penalty, then he became a liability. When you spend more time looking at the ref with your hands in the air than playing hockey, you’re wasting time and turning the officials against your team.
He was one of our best players but there were times when his cheap stick shots could have seriously injured one of our guys. I don’t think Cooke plays like that though.
And if Tyler Kennedy scares you more than Sidney Crosby…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I dunno why there’s so much angst towards alternate viewpoints lately, but I’ll explain why I’m more afraid of Kennedy than Crosby.
I feel that for the Caps to win this series, we’ll need to shut down Crosby and Malkin. I’m sure everyone else knows that too. I feel we can contain Crosby, and limit his scope of damage. I don’t know if we can do the same for Malkin. Kennedy scares me because with all the pressure on Crosby/Malkin/Staal/Sykora/Guerin, he’s going to have a lot of icetime against tired or our lower defensemen.
Also, to answer previous question, Avery was the biggest reason, behind Lundqvist, the Rangers were in the series. Like it or not, the guy sparked his team, and the Rangers were clearly better with him in the line up, even if he kept taking stupid penalties, and when he was on the ice, not only was I terrified for our players safety, but for the Rangers to play better, particularly in game 7. I think Cooke could have a bigger impact than you want to believe, JP, maybe not on offense, but in the “Spear someone in the throat/face” kind of way. And like it or not, that crap happens in the playoffs, and you have to find a way to deal with it, because it’s obvious that a late hit that results in an injury means more and deserves a longer suspension (or a suspension, period) than a spear to the face, or a punch. That’s why Cooke scares me.

I distinctly remember Avery sitting all the way at the end of the bench by himself for almost every game looking sad and lonely.
If he was supposed to be the spark he was sitting very far away from the fuel.
His bench actions and his gameplay were so far from each other it wasn’t funny. I think he hates Torts, and Torts is feeling pretty similarly, and the whole team felt that effect.

Just like Brash on Betts. I still doubt anyone was more afraid of Brash going into the series than they were afraid of any of the Young Guns… or several role players.
And speaking of circuses, everyone’s favorite sideshow, The Maven, offers his parting words on the series concluded.
