The Caps are 3-2 all-time on April 28, with wins over Jersey, Boston and Buffalo and losses to Pittsburgh and the Isles.

I really hope the Rangers-could-end-our-season-we-have-to-win Capitals show up, not the we’ve-won-two-straight-and-could-send-the-Rangers-home-this-will-be-easy Caps.

1) for the love of Peter, stay out of the box. The Rags have only a miniscule chance 5 on 5 against us tonight, so let’s not give ‘em hope with PM after unnecessary PM. Sasha Rabbit, I’m looking at you.
2) cut the cute crap. I enjoy the perfect pass to set up the perfect goal, but shot / deflection / rebound is the order of the night tonight. Tommy Flash, borrow some balls from Bradley. He seems to have plenty to spare.
3) impose our will. From faceoff to faceoff, we win at the half wall, below the goal line and in front of the net—at both ends—and we move on to round 2.

1) Right on.
2) Double right on.
3) That’s IT!! We don’t NEED to be lucky, we just need to play right. So we could win with luck, we could win with skill. But it will take bad poor effort to lose. Why did I ever doubt we would win?
So that you wouldn’t feel so bad when they lost. I thought they would win Game 7 last year, and after they lost, I was really sad for a week. The team is so frustrating! They give you hope, suck it away, give it back again, and then no one knows what happens next.

Why is our coach so dumb?
Colton Orr scratched again. He played every regular season game, the first five of this series and then when he was needed most he was scratched. So what does Torts do? Scratch him again. FOR AARON VOROS!!!!

Voros did get hot at one point, right? Like 5 goals in 3 games? And what will Orr do if Brashear is not playing?
by red army line on Apr 28, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Seven points in four games – Games 2-5 of the season. Nine points over the 49 games.
As for Orr – he would do exactly what Brash did, outside of the intentional attack. Forecheck, hit, hammer and pressure.

Help me here....
I feel like I’ve been forced into a time machine and it’s suddenly 1987 – we’re playing dump and chase hockey in the NYR end. What the hell? Is that really how we’re going to win this game? With an offense from Reagan’s second term?
Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.
A lot better than when the team starts trying to carry the puck through everyone and shoot from 50 feet away like the team does a lot of the time they get frustrated.
There's got to be a happy medium
I don’t want them bombing away from the blue line, but NO SHOTS 1/2 way through the period? Can’t score if you don’t shoot.

This from the Post:
Tarik will also be chiming in every so often, and I’ll also try to throw in some chatter from our three — yes, three — columnists here tonight (Mike Wise, Tom Boswell and Michael Wilbon).
I sure hope that nobody was denied a press pass so Wilbon could be there. He should be persona non grata. Boswell at least shows humility about hockey. Wilbon flaunts his ignorance.
But at least Wise tries. Wilbon’s a better writer, no question. But Wilbon sold hockey short long ago.
by Gould Old Days on Apr 28, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Wildon doesn’t bug me because he isn’t in to hockey, for the most part, and that’s okay – to each their own. But Wise always comes across to me like he doesn’t know nearly as much as he thinks he does.
Shot attempts were 19-8 NYR. Pretty dominated.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yes. The Rangers missed the net on more shots than the Caps got on goal, too.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. The three games the Caps won were games they were outshot by the Rangers. The games they lost were a ton of shots all from the outside.

Unfortunately, the best way to draw penalties is to get the puck in the other team’s zone, work it around, and tire them out and the Capitals don’t look like they’re going to be able to do that.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Dude. I count like three times the Caps have had the puck behind the net, no pressure, and been unable to exit the zone. They can’t complete a simple pass. They are choking. Big time.
This is unbelievable.
That gives me hope
The Rangers effort is unsustainable, and the Caps merely need to show up. To be only 1-1 shows how inept the Rags are.

McKeon was the only one that kept insisting Varlamov was a bad move even after he was playing well though, wasn’t he?
Yeah, he made his bed and slept in it.

I love lamp
And Var-lah-mov.

For the series, definately. If they win the Cup, or even get to the Finals, he’s at least gotta be a finalist for the Conn Smyth.

13-1 in shots, yes?
BIG change from the first 2 periods.

also... respect to the Rangers overall
even begrudging respect to #16. The Rangers played well tonight and you have to give them credit for that.

They should've won
We really got out played the first two periods. Then again, they suck, so even outplaying a team doesn’t= success.

O.K now we can talk matchups
Devils or Pitt?
Go Devils? I think.
Dev’’s up 3-2 with 16 to go in the third

I'd rather have Pittsburgh
A Classic! Semin and Ovechkin vs Crosby and Malkin. :)) Although Parise’s not half bad either.

Good series
NYR got a lot out of the talent they have. And Lundqvist, wow. He’s good.

Might not be a popular opinion here...
BUT that soft minor early in the 3rd period on the Rangers definitely helped us get momentum that we never relinquished for the rest of the game.
I honestly didn’t have a problem with the call, but it was definitely a different game after that

Seemed like a pretty clean hip check
Jurcina did essentially the same exact thing on the opposite boards to Avery and no call.
by DonnieKnutts on Apr 28, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
it was a very clean check
The problem was the puck – according to the call – was not in the area at the time
Yeah, according to the letter of the rule, that was a penalty. However, they basically let everything go tonight. A little superstar treatment for AO tonight, imo.
Looks like the refs were determined not to be the deciding factor, which I can live with.
Better that than the alternative.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

that juice….always getting away with murder.
by Natty Bumppo on Apr 28, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
and on that note...
Somebody would probably have to pull a gun and literally shoot Avery in the head for him to draw a penalty. It’s almost comical. Don’t worry, I’m a Caps fan BUT it was pretty funny to see Avery get run left and right (a taste of his own medicine, sure) and get no whistles. My nightmare was that we were going to have to see him celebrate a GWG of his own, which would surely have been a bad memory I’d take to the grave.

Speaking of Avery...
The Caps best “defender” with 2 mins left? How about Avery’s horrible acting job after Ovie’s hit. Real smart spending 30 seconds acting hurt and making it 5 on 4 when the games on the line Sean.

1) It was Feds that hit him
2) As much as I despise him, I highly doubt he was acting. He got hit with a knee on knee and twisted awkwardly. That hurts.

I thought it was Ovie, but either way, if it was legit, then ouch, if not, bad move.

Caps first period had me nervous as heck....
That was some bad/nervous hockey! 2nd period better and 3rd looked good.
So did Varlamov
Did you see him at the end of the game? Just cool as heck in the handshake line, looking at the ceiling.
The handshake line? He was cool as heck with 30 seconds left at the timeout! It was amazing.

Seriously though... that's a GUT-PUNCH loss to NJ fans
I can’t imagine being a Devils fan right about now.
I've been through many Caps-related disappointments
…overtime in a Game 7 obviously hurts, Esa Tikkanen obviously hurts…BUT conceding two goals to go from winning to losing in the space of the last two minutes of a Game 7? That’s on another level.
by DonnieKnutts on Apr 28, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
This is a way different type of Caps team than the Pens have ever seen in the playoffs. I can’t wait!

There are definitely gonna be some altercations near Verizon
I was at the last Caps-Pens game in Chinatown and things were tense and ugly afterwards
So… does anyone know what the “non-complimentary phrase” was that the Islanders fan was advertising? Just curious, in the interest of historical accuracy. :)
