Absurd. Yes, he should have been suspended at least a game or two, but Avery can butt-end people in the face and not even get a fine. The double-standard is an absolute farce.

Agreed
This seems really severe, and suggests that they took Betts’ injury into account when doling out the punishment. I really think Avery’s butt-end on Jurcina was a more dangerous play, despite causing a much lesser injury.

I hate to say it (as I quite like Brash), but I agree with the NHL policy here. We can debate all we want about equal treatment for egregious activities that Avery has been doling out to the Caps, but this sort of thing really doesn’t need to be in the game. Nor do I want the Caps to get a reputation for this kind of behavior.
Brash went out of his way to “bump” Betts and ended up knocking the guy out of the playoffs. As our previous history has shown, playoff hockey is not a given right for any player, and to have your opportunity taken away because of the deliberate actions of another player is unacceptable. Brash should be punished harshly primarily because of his intent to harm and the result of his actions.
The harsh ruling hopefully will prvent other teams from doing the same to our Caps players.
