"Tonight you're going to see everything thrown at them. Anything we can do. Pucks are going to be coming from everywhere. Bodies are going to be flying. There's going to be scrums in front of the net. We just have to make sure we are more determined than they are."

Laich is a good quote, but it would be better to hear this as the POST game analysis.
“Pucks were coming from everywhere. Bodies were flying”
Time to back up the words boys.

I want to see Gomez fly into his own bench, right on top of Avery – those are the flying bodies I want to see.

I’m not sure why tonight would be any different in regards to this quote. To me any and all playoff games should be that way…hopefully it’s not too little too late.
More revenue in 7 games. Thanks Ted! :) I mean, obviously they know they’re going to win the series, so they’re just maximizing the amount they can get out of each one.

If I had to pick from current Caps, i think it’d have to be Bradley.

I like the spirit, but I don’t like that it looks like Clark won’t play.

Dr. Peter Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes…
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

After Game 4 in the Caps' locker room. . .
Ted Leonsis: We’re down 3-1, what the hell happened guys?
Bruce Boudreau: We’ve had some problems gotta—
Brooks Laich: (interrupts and points to Tomas Fleischmann) We’d be fine if dickless here weren’t getting all of my power play time!!!
TL: Is this true?
BL: Yes, this man has no dick.

In the same blog file, Tarik reports that Boudreau is telling his guys to be “more selective with their shots.”
So which is it?
Gotta like Laich.
How many of you think he should be named captain in the off season?
Swing by The Flyer Frequent. You have nothing better to do.
None of us. The Caps have a captain – Chris Clark.
After that, however, I’m fully onboard.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Clark, from where I sit (fairly far removed), doesn’t seem like a big enough presence in the lineup to lead by example enough. I think the switch for the Flyers from Smith to Richards helped a lot, because he’s a guy who can provide a spark on the ice, not just veteran leadership. Also Clark’s fragility seems like an issue. Hard to lead if you’re not there…

True, but until Clark himself relinquishes the captaincy, it’s not going anywhere.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But Smith left, right, so they had to name someone else captain?
by red army line on Apr 24, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if they made the switch anyway. They’ve stripped active players of their captaincy numerous times.

Well Mike Richards is a terrific choice.

If this isn’t what they were doing initially, what were they doing? Why weren’t they doing it?
by DrinkingPartner on Apr 24, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions
Two reasons:
1) It’s harder than they thought to “flip the switch” come playoff time, and
2) Once the switch was flipped, the bulb wasn’t of the wattage that they thought it was.

I also attribute the lack of intensity to:
a) an unlucky start. With one or both of at least average goaltending or two blatant interference penalties being called, we win game 1, we play with that intense confidence you see during our winning streaks. Self-doubt is a dangerous mental poison.
b) dissappointing series from key individuals: Mike Green and Sergei Fedorov. They are far from playoff intense. Those are two critical leaders-by-example, if not in the dressing room.
The keyboard is mightier.
I suspect that on point b) Green will have a good excuse for his play and Fedorov will have nothing but age to fall back on.

Yep, after this series ends we’ll find out what’s wrong with Greener. I doubt he forgot how to play hockey after game 82.
One of the Caps message boards on the CBS sports website has a post saying Greener has had trouble with his ex. Don’t know how that reliable that is.

From Corey’s blog:
“I’ve strayed a little bit from my game trying to play too conservative,” Green said. “That’s not my game. We’ve been successful all year playing the way we do and whether or not we’re a risky team or as individuals. When you play aggressive, good things happen. Even if something happens [negatively], you have good luck because you’re always in control of the game. When you’re sitting back, you’re not in control.”
Whatever you say, Mike. Can’t wait to see the Rags odd-man rushes tonight.
I think the soft schedule to end the season hurt them. Their last eight (and eleven of their last twelve games) were against non-playoff teams. That had to cool them off some.

It went back a lot further than that – the team coasted for the better part of the last two months, ramping it up on occasion, but largely getting by on keeping games close and showing up for third periods. But you’re right – when they played Buffalo late, I commented that I’d wished they’d played more Buffalos in March and April and fewer TBs and ATLs.
A year ago, they spent almost all they had making the playoffs, so I’m sure they didn’t want to suffer that fate again, but there’s a middle ground and they seem to have failed to find it. To me, that falls on the coach, but we can do the post-mortem post-playoffs. There’s still time to put it all together.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’ve been reading left and right various opinions on why did it come to this (again), and while I mostly agree with what’s been said (like in this thread) there’s one thing that’s been worrying me since the last several games at the end of the season. You see, I am more concerned about their unwillingness/inability/lack_of_motivation/whatever to rebound and play like we expect them to play for more than one game. Like in this series, they play poorly a game or two (for whatever reason), then they get their senses and start kicking ass. And then you think, OK, that’s it, they’re back, but here we go again – shots from the point, no one in the crease, fancy passing and stuff like that.
So, even if they pull it together (like they should) and play well tonight, I will still be super worried about Sunday @ MSG. Mostly because I cannot figure out how come their bell didn’t start ringing a while ago.
I agree with this. I also think that since the only real “adjustments” BB has made are to shuffle lines it is going to be hard to win 3 straight. It seems like every time we do something successful Torts takes the day off and comes back to shut us down. I don’t know if that is our effort, our mentality (i.e. “we just won so we can go back to perimeter shots”) or if Torts is making X and O adjustments that BB isn’t responding too. Either way, the inconsistent nature of their play does not give me high confidence that we can rattle off 3 straight. The vast talent advantage that we have (outside the crease) suggests that we can in fact beat them three straight. Time will tell.
There’s still time to put it all together.
Yeah they got, oh, say about seven hours. Tick tock.
(I will NOT stick around to watch this handshake in person, even though it is, conceptually, the most wonderful thing in the entire sporting universe.)
And while were at it
Dump the Rock the Red open and bring back The Beautiful People. That’s the hard ass music we need to get ready to rumble.
I love to see Laich showing some leadership and I would definitely support him being captain one day, but I have to say that this is the playoffs and if should be doing all of this from the beginning.
if should be doing all of this from the beginning
“if” instead of “he.” is that a T9 texting error? can we text in comments to the rink now?
