Manson: Beautiful People

Muse: Knights of Cydonia, Our Time Is Running Out (fitting, no?), Hysteria, New Born… hell, just about anything off “Absolution” or “Origin of Symmetry”

GN’R: Nighttrain (live)

Arctic Monkeys: Anything off “Whatever People Say…”

Alice in Chains: Anything off “Dirt” and a few off the first album

Starland Vocal Band: Afternoon Delight (j/k)

Here they come to snuff the rooster
You know he ain’t gonna die

by Natty Bumppo on Apr 24, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, pretty much anything off Dirt is good. Ridiculously underrated band.

I’d probably take Dam that River.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

also: best MTV unplugged set ever. dare i say, better even than nirvana.

by Natty Bumppo on Apr 24, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Bold claim. Not sure I can get on board. As amazing as that rendition of Would is, the Nirvana rendition of Where did you Sleep Last Night gives me crazy chills every time I hear it. Though Alice in Chains gets credit because Nirvana cheated a little bit. I think we can all agree that Heroin addiction is a key to a successful MTV Unplugged performance.

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Ooooh. Damn close run thing. I’d give the nod to AIC by a hair because I think that Layne and Jerry’s vocal harmonies worked well with the whole acoustic shtick.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I love the album. Got Me Wrong may be my favorite song on there (besides Would which is just amazing) but Cobain’s voice is so tortured on their Unplugged it’s just amazing.

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Got Me Wrong gets extra-special kudos for being on the Clerks soundtrack.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I am/was also a huge fan of Pearl Jam’s unplugged. That version of Porch is insanely good.

Oh, and add Porch to my list

I kid.

Best GNR song ever!

Loaded like a freight train
Flying like an airplane
….

by Kareem E. on Apr 24, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice clip, but no chance in hell the best GNR song ever is a three-chord acoustic ditty.

Now, give me Rocket Queen from Live at the Ritz and we’re cookin’ with gas.

Rec’d Rocket Queen. This argument could go on forever. Estranged. Coma. Dead Horse. Locomotive. Mr. Brownstone. Don’t Damn Me. Pretty Tied Up. And of course, Welcome to the Jungle.

Alright, here’s the plan – swap out Flash for Slash and Kozzy for Izzy and we’re ready to rock tonight.

Yeah. There are a bunch of potential Zep songs. I chose Immigrant Song because of the viking references.

Addendum to the Addendum:

“Mountain Song” by Jane’s Addiction. And “Three Days.” And a lot of other JA tunes.

Starland Vocal Band: Afternoon Delight

HA

That escalated quickly!

by Sct112 on Apr 24, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I just thought of another AIC song to add: Grind, primarily because I think that’s what the Caps need to do right now, and also because of this line:

“In my darkest hour, you’d be well-advised not to plan my funeral ’til the body dies.”

by D'ohboy on Apr 25, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Refused? Mogwai? Mastodon? Russian Circles? The Sword? Rec’d for your excellent taste.

by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Apr 24, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Heh. I’d never heard of any of those bands (I assume they’re bands, but they could be DJs or Worlds of Warcraft characters for all I know).

Rec’d for saying they sound like WoW characters. I thought the same thing and don’t know anything about it.

Well, Mogwai was the name of the original Gremlin from the movie…

“I’ll take swords for 800.”

“That’s, . . . S-Words…”

Best part about Russian Circles? Named after a hockey drill.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps there should be a band named “Swedish Circles” after… well, you know.

Anything off of Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets.

Anything off of Colors by Between the Buried and Me. Selkies by BTBAM.

Thrice: Vheissu or most of Artist in the Ambulance.

Deftones: Adrenaline

Word on the BTBAM.

Colors is the last album I actually purchased. That’s the biggest vote of confidence I could give.

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I think my last album was either Mouth of the Architect, “Quietly,” or Irepress’ “Sol Eye Sea I.”

Hockey and Music

More than other sports, I’d argue that hockey has a musical aesthetic. I can’t tell you the number of Caps fans/season ticket holders I run into at shows…

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

I was thinking about doing the same thing this morning. In no order:

Can’t Hold Back – Aceyalone
If You Want Blood – AC/DC
Rock Steady – Aretha Franklin
I Know You Got Soul – Bobby Byrd
Wild in the Streets – Circle Jerks
Lux Aeterna – Clint Mansell (From Requiem for a Dream soundtrack)
This Perfect Day – The Fall
Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell – Iggy Pop
Move Your Feet – Junior Senior
The Fight Song – Marilyn Manson
I’m Gonna Kick Your Ass – Moistboyz
Cruising for a Bruising – Rev. Horton Heat
Rocks Off – Stones
Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight – The Rezillos
Are You Ready – Sly & the Family Stone
Stooges Party – Stooges Brass Band
Blood Music – Deadboy & the Elephantmen

Seattle band, Seattle boy. :) Hard to pick one, but that’s probably the most “amping” of their songs due to the rhythm-forward nature of it.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Tell me that Pinhead Circus one is a cover…

Totally. But it’s awesome. They were one of our favorite bands back in high school in Denver.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m going to have to give it a spin. I’m a junkie for unique covers (Bowie’s White Light/White Heat gets a lot of play on the crackbox).

Good luck finding it. It was off one of their original releases on a label that doesn’t exist anymore. I think someone repackaged it later on. Amazon will probably have it.

Don’t know if you’re familiar with Cooler or not, but you should check out “Eat My Goal.”

It’s actually a soccer song, but it rules. It was the (official?) theme song to Euro ’96.

Alright, here's mine:

I just threw this together in a couple seconds, but it would definitely be a solid “Run Through A Brick Wall” mix for me:

The Dillinger Escape Plan- Panasonic Youth

Converge- Fault and Fracture

An Albatross- I am the Lazer Viking

The Blood Brothers- Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon

At the Drive-In- Arc Arsenal

Darkest Hour- The Sadist Nation

Bane- Ali v. Frazier I

The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza- My Bowling Ball’s Frozen in a Foot Locker in Chicago

Lightning Bolt- Assassins

The Minor Times- Casket City Lights

Protest the Hero- Bury the Hatchet

Lords- Cause All Of You Are Fucked

Envy- Pure Birth and Loneliness

Alternatively, you could just play any Metallica album up through …And Justice For All

by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Apr 24, 2009 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Most of those aren’t personally familiar, but I’ll give them a spin. I need a playlist for Game 6 anyway.

Couldn’t decide on any DEP, Converge or ATDI stuff.

I guess if I had to pick one ATDI song, it would be “Enfilade.” The “freight train coming” seems like a hockey lyric to me.

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of this stuff is harder than my taste but Arc Arsenal is an epic jam (and that album is solid gold).

by grapejoos on Apr 24, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally forgot these:

Anything off of Black Sails in the Sunset or Art of Drowning by A.F.I.

S/T Rage Against the Machine

Strung Out: Element of Sonic Defiance

I’m a VT fan for a reason. So this playlist is not complete without

METALLICA’S ENTER SANDMAN

by vt caps fan on Apr 24, 2009 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

Here are a few I’ve thought of..

The Ducky Boys – Fight

The Beastie Boys – Fight for your Right

Skankin’ Pickles – It’s not too late

Circle Jerks – Back against the wall

Transplants – Tall Cans in the Air

by JustJeff on Apr 24, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

Strange...

With the sentiments expressed on here, I would’ve figured that:

Bouncing Souls – True Believers

…would have been a lock.

Holy crap. Now that is an oversight.

by Rob Parker on Apr 24, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Not as bad as...

Mötorhead – Ace of Spades

by D'ohboy on Apr 24, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ace of Spades is good but True Believers embodies our (my?) mindset going into game 5. We could throw Die With Your Boots On in there too.

Wow, my musical tastes aren’t nearly as metallic as y’all’s.

Anyway—and I don’t even really like the Foo Fighters—as I’ve mentioned before, “The Pretender” still gets me fired up for Caps hockey every time.

by Scott in Shaw on Apr 24, 2009 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think it’s more because this is a “get me pumped up” playlist. I dig some James Brown, too, but other than “Sex Machine,” it’s not what I listen to to get going.
