Dancing with someone other than who brung ya
Each of the last three Stanley Cup Champions made a goaltending change in its first round series - Carolina benched Gerber for Ward three years ago, Anaheim swapped out Bryzgalov for Giguere two seasons ago, and Detroit went from Hasek to Osgood last year. Perhaps Torts should go with Stephen Valiquette tonight... (h/t F&B)

How many teams that didn’t win the Cup went with one goalie straight through? Probably a lot more. All we know for sure is that the last 3 teams that won a Cup made a first round goalie change, and that the Caps made a first round goalie change. Between this fact, IceBat’s fortune cookie, and the Stingrays’ triumph, the Gods are clearly giving us signs of good things to come. Indisputable.
Here’s another sign – my lunch receipt today was #8. Of course, I was recreating everything exactly as I did them on Monday, and then my receipt was #87…

Btw, this just validates the coaching genius of Bruce Boudreau – he knew all along that Varly gave the team a better chance of winning any given game, but that he had to get Theo at least one game to give the team a chance at winning The Cup. Bravo, Bruce. Bravo.
Ahem.

It also reveals his marketing genius. Tim Leone said that the final chapter was going to be about this year’s playoff run. Obviously BB needed some drama to help sell the book. (On a more serious note, how long do you think BB had been contemplating the need to bench Theo? He hadn’t looked great for the last few regular season games. I wonder if Theo went in on a real short leash, even if BB didn’t tell anyone.)
I think it’s pretty obvious that the leash was short from the get-go, with the thought being “If everyone else flips the switch but JT doesn’t, he’s sitting.” I just wonder what the line between getting another start and being replaced was.

Yeah I didn’t phrase that right. Obviously there was a short leash because he got pulled. What I meant to ask was where that line was, i.e. how much slack was Theo going to get. If he had only let in 1 soft goal was he going to be pulled? Or was it just that 2 soft goals is utterly unacceptable for an NHL goalie to allow?
Guess we’ll have to wait until the book comes out. :)

the line might well have been contingent on varlamov’s play in practice. a few different caps mentioned his practice performances during post-game interviews.

In seriousness, I’m wondering if he suspected that the first part of that was true (that Varly gave the team a better chance of winning any given game). I suspected that before the playoffs began, largely due to the stinker Theo put up in the last game and Varly’s strong play in limited action.
That he saw enough after just one game suggests to me that BB did suspect that going in.
I am sorry, but I just can’t see how genius it is to let the team lose one game or at least run that risk to basically say “well, I did give you a chance…didn’t I?” to Jose after he yanks from the lineup.
Didn’t matter, anyway, the Caps lost the 2nd game, too.
