Excellent – not only did Varly have a great game, but the Rags got dominated top to bottom. i hope that piece of shit Avery gets suspended.

He won’t – but he definitely deserves it.

If anybody has the game on DVR, and can get screen grabs, there is a moderately funny potential still of Torts on the bench, with a sign behind him that says “section 84” but he moves and makes a crazy face and all you can see is “section 8” which also happens to be the military term for discharge due to mental illness. It happened right after Avery got this penalty like 2:48 left on the clock

by Sombrero Guy on Apr 20, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol, holy shit. I don’t know why but that caught me off guard. I need to clean the coffee off of my keyboard…

by DrinkingPartner on Apr 21, 2009 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I think Avery does get at least one game for that. If Lucic got a game for punching Lapierre in the face, Avery gets at least a game for that. Especially with his track record.

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d wish rather that the Rangers have the ability to play him next game and choose not to, or even better, he plays as he will be mentally castrated.

by Icebat on Apr 21, 2009 3:22 AM EDT up reply actions

If Lucic gets one for the shot on Lapierre, then Avery should get one for this. Unlike Lucic, Avery is a repeat offender and no stranger to the NHL’s disciplinary system.

A really, really sloppy (sorry… ok, I’m not sorry) game on Avery’s part. He shoud do this more often.

Let's go Caps!

by MikeL-Pivonka on Apr 21, 2009 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Like many, I have mixed feelings. All things being equal (wait, this is the NHL), he should get a suspension. On the other hand, Erskine is so in his head, that Avery’s now probably more valuable to us on the ice (well, in the penalty box), then in the press box.

Backstrom helped out too, 3 As and deflecting away Callahan’s open-net shot off the post.

I can’t tell you how many times after Varly made a stop, I found myself saying “Theo doesn’t make that stop.”
If the Caps can just keep from imploding, they cruise to the series win.
Go to the net, and protect Varly. Caps in 6!

by marks4java on Apr 20, 2009 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

a .50 GAA and a .982 save percentage. You think the kid may be getting into the Rangers head? I can’t remember the last time I felt that secure watching a Caps goalie play. Maybe Olie in ’98.

by b.orr4 on Apr 20, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Huet in his first game in the red white and blue, a 4-0 win over Brodeur’s Devils. I’m still really scared about Varlamov possibly getting injured.

by red army line on Apr 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a great way to put it.
Going into the third, I was like, “I just hope he gets the goose-egg”, but never worried about the game.

by marks4java on Apr 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

So, who played better? Varlamov today, or Hiller in his Game 1?

by red army line on Apr 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll say Hiller. Thought he faced tougher shots, as a whole, but my memory could be wrong.

by David Getz on Apr 20, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Varly made the 2 or 3 sparklers that he needed to make. Something that Theo failed to do in game one. This game easily could have been 7-0 without Lundy in net for the Rags.

by Sct112 on Apr 20, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s not go overboard with the “getting into Rangers’ heads” talk quite yet. Varly played well but there were definitely close calls..He made some clutch saves but I didn’t feel comfortable until the 4th goal went in.

He’s no King, but solid and occasionally spectacular is fine. Think how far can this team go if it gives up 2 a game?

From tonight’s AP report on the game:
“For two games everyone was wondering how the Caps were going to beat Henrik Lundqvist. Now, the bewilderment is on the Rangers’ side and they have to be wondering how they can possibly beat Varlamov”

by David Getz on Apr 20, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

As far as “getting in heads” my opinion at the time I read about Ovi watching the Rags practice was that he isn’t focused on what matters: how the Caps play. The day he gets his head back in that space is the day the floodgates will re-open for his goal-scoring and he begins his journeyt to claim the Playoff scoring lead.

Props to Brooksie for the "ugly goal" we needed

The ever-important 3rd goal in a 2-0 game, no less. I had a feeling he would score tonight and he came through at a very crucial moment. Laich has been solid as a rock this series. He also drew a great penalty with his forecheck on a PK.

Speaking of penalties, to his credit, Torts said the refs had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. An obvious statement, but part of me thought that he might have some complaints at some of the tick-tack calls in the 2nd period. Overall the refs were mighty whistle-happy throughout. The calls on Feds and Kozlov were really soft.

by DonnieKnutts on Apr 20, 2009 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

it almost felt like they were making up for game 1

by snowburnt on Apr 20, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Laich’s play on that PK to draw a penalty was epic. He needs to stay with the 1st PP unit (unless I’m mistaken, I think he was out with them for the goal).

by grapejoos on Apr 20, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Saying Laich, Semin, Backstrom, Ovechkin, and Green make a talented top PP unit is a serious understatement.

by red army line on Apr 20, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

To me, all goals the Caps get are pretty…

Ranger goals are ugly (esp. those by Avery…)

Let's go Caps!

by MikeL-Pivonka on Apr 21, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to nitpick, but two observations:

1) I thought Flash was awful tonight. I’m not really sure what Boudreau sees in him on the first PP unit over Laich. Hopefully that will be corrected soon.

2) Mike Green does not look like Mike Green…anyone know the deal?

Otherwise, great, great win. Confident with Varly in net.

by ninefttall on Apr 20, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I think Fleischmann on the top unit only happened when he’s been out the shift before the PP.

by David Getz on Apr 20, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And a third observation, we came out in the third with no energy. I know they are trying to protect a lead, but if it werent for Czarlamov (LOVE IT) we might not have won that game… They need to play 60 minutes of hockey. Otherwise, cant wait for Wednesday!!

by amkcaps on Apr 20, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m going to disagree on that one. I thought they played a perfect third period. They didn’t fall into a shell, but they weren’t overly aggressive. The forwards focused on backchecking and the D-men just chipped the puck out and made the Rangers go 180 feet time and time again. The fact that MSG was half empty with 8 minutes to go showed how the Caps were sucking the life out of the building in the third.

by b.orr4 on Apr 20, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you b.orr4, the Capitals had energy, the just weren’t attacking, they were playing all out defense.

by David Getz on Apr 20, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Green’s hurt. Yeah, I’m speculating, but remember when he took that tumble with Stamkos back at the end of the season? He got up really slowly with his arm just dangling there. Then he and the team claimed he just got the wind knocked out of him. Yeah right.

I’m betting he gets surgery the moment the season ends. His shoulder hasn’t been right since the Pronger hit. If you think about it, that makes his season all the more impressive.

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree Green isn’t Green, but he bounced back surprisingly well after the Stamkos incident. I would say it’s 100% mental but I can’t recall a signature Green laser (aka Green Lantern on a goal?) in recent times so I hesitate to say there isn’t a physical aspect much as I’d like to deny it.

by Icebat on Apr 21, 2009 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The main reason I don’t think he’s hurt is that he still played pretty well after that in the regular season and has still put some hard shots on net in this series. If anything’s hurt, I think it’s his wrist and not his shoulder. The contact does seem to be bothering him. He’s still playing ok, but not up to his usual excellence.

by grapejoos on Apr 21, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

1) Flash was in the right place at the right time at least three times but just muffed his chances. He did make a couple of sloppy plays though as well. Overall though I wouldn’t characterize his game as “awful.” He fluffs all his straightforward chances and then gets a lucky one off the back of his leg or something. The breakaway on Lundqvist, if he had just lifted the puck, that’s the game right there.

2) Thought the same on Green…speculation in the last post that he never fully recovered from the Pronger hit? Let’s hope that’s not the case. He was super-tentative in his own zone, leading to some turnovers. That’s been the case the whole series.

by DonnieKnutts on Apr 20, 2009 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

by gfcaps fan on Apr 21, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I bet getting that sort of treatment hurts. And if it was the Rangers bench I’m sure they were none too pleased.

by red army line on Apr 22, 2009 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Scoring first in Game 4...

…will be HUGE, to state the obvious. It was so quiet in MSG by the third period that you could hear the players chattering to each other. The crowd was just demoralized, deflated, depressed. Ideal situation is another quick two-goal lead early. I’ve been to Rangers games at the Garden, the home fans can get restless pretty quickly and turn on their team. There was zero energy in that building for the last two periods.

by DonnieKnutts on Apr 20, 2009 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

I agree Game 4 will be big and that’s what we need to take as we have the ability to do so, but Game 5 at home will be even bigger whichever way Game 4 goes. I’m looking to fly up for it if I can find airfare anywhere close to reasonable. $500 is to rich for my blood.

Did anyone check out the ice times tonight? Green and Ovechkin were under 22. Nice. Part of that I suppose is them not getting double-shifted every PP. Poti and Pothier got PP time at the points too

Fehr only had 7:32. I know he pretty much only sees the ice 5 on 5 but still

by Sombrero Guy on Apr 20, 2009 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think 91, 28, 19, 39, 10, and 15 should all be getting SH time, like Torts using 3 sets of forwards. Maybe our PK is good, but it’s only the NYR PP.

by red army line on Apr 20, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Speaking of 91

..enough with the stick infractions already! Every time he’s backchecking I’m saying to myself, “Don’t hook him Sergei, Don’t hook him Sergei, Don’t hook him Sergei.” It’s like Feds is good for at least one cheapie backchecking infraction per game.

by DonnieKnutts on Apr 20, 2009 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

This is only his second playoffs under the strict infraction calling era. I’d rather have him than Flash on the PK. Not maybe for long shifts, but to attack on the PK, be smart, not allow the Rangers a clear entry, leading to a clear, etc. Maybe 30 sec shifts

by red army line on Apr 21, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t play Fedorov on the PK – those are hard minutes and he looks worn out enough as it is.

by David Getz on Apr 20, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree. Fedorov is toast. Whatever juju he got from playing with the young guys last year has run its course. Now he just looks really, really tired. That’s why you see all the stick infractions – he can’t keep up with his feet, so he’s using his stick. It’s the same thing that Nylander does.

Semin’s stick infractions, on the other hand, are just due to a lack of discipline. Same thing with Steckel’s patented “free-hand rodeo hold.”

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Something’s definitely wrong with him. Only two shifts in the third totalling just a 1:34. I wonder if he even plays on Wednesday.

According to the guys on the NHL Network, it’s a wrist/hand thing. That would explain why he’s not taking draws.

by Whiter Mage on Apr 21, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm stoked, but...

The next game is huge. Win Wednesday, and it’s a new series.

From here on out, the Rangers need to win 2/4. The Caps need to win 3/4. Yes, it can be done, but it won’t be easy.

Varlamov is helping, and the fact that the Caps FINALLY decided to crash the net is reason for hope.

The Rangers eventually woke up from the dreamworld they’ve been playing in: the one where Wade Redden and Michal Roszival are decent playoff defensemen; the one where Ryan Callahan is the second coming of Claude Lemieux; the one where Nik Antropov looks like Valery Kharlamov; and the one where Sean Avery is a disciplined winger.

Still, despite all that, the Rangers only need to play .500 to win this one. They’ve shown all year long that they’re capable of playing .500. The Caps still have their work cut out for them. Wednesday will be key.

To put it in military terms, last Wednesday was the Fall of France. Saturday night was Dunkerque: we made it out alive with some hope for the future because of Varlamov’s performance. Tonight was the Battle of Britain – scrappy performance that got us back on the right track. Something tells me that we’re still in for a Blitz and a u-boat blockade (courtesy of Callahan and Lundqvist, respectively). It’s appropriate that at that point of the war, the Russians began to bear the brunt of the fighting, and they will again. Can our Russians (and token Swede) hold out until D-Day?

Maybe Tortorella (being Italian) will change sides halfway through. . .

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:43 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but we pick up 81% of the possible points against the ATL this season including playoffs. 15-6-4.

In the playoffs, however, that number drops to 15-10, or, 3 out of 5. It’s no small task coming up. Hopefully the speech begins with Patton, and not a British guy telling the boys that “This will be a story that we will tell our grandchildren – And mightily bored they’ll be!”

Clausewitz had it right: much of war (and hockey) comes down to sheer dumb luck. If Callahan scores on that empty net. I don’t think we’re celebrating an easy victory tonight.

Of course, if Ovie or Semin connects on one of their many chances in games 1 and 2, we’re not down 2-1, either.

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

That doesn’t mean anything – divisions are just a way to organize teams and the way the Capitals played Philly or Pittsburgh in November or December doesn’t have any bearing on this series.

by David Getz on Apr 21, 2009 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

To extend that even further, I’m not sure that what the Caps did to the Rangers in the regular season is all that relevant, either, given the way this series has played out thus far.

by D'ohboy on Apr 21, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I've Never been more confident

By sheer numbers and statistical theory the Caps may be down a game and have a hard road in front of them. By observation and hockey experience they are nothing like Poland, France or England at the outset of WWII. We have lost two games by two goals, one of those games with a goalie who looked like the backup. We have improved each game in offense and defense, and have dominated every game. If the Caps had never had a chance to win the previous games I might feel some pessimism, but they have made a few mistakes in those games that cost them the wins. I have seen nothing from the Rangers that makes me fear them other than Henrik, and I don’t think he can win them four out of seven games by himself. This is a Caps team that flirts with greatness (at least in terms of Caps teams), and while a Pens team or a Bruins team might be able to catch them in seven, I can’t imagine, from what I’ve seen so far, that this mediocre Rangers team can best them. I was never convinced that we were even close to being out of the series before, and I am positive we have cleared the hurdles to take unrelenting control. Besides, I got my magic shoes via UPS today…

I hate Pittsburgh. And the Pens too.
